Race Info | Shambhala Open Cup May 2nd - 6th

Apr 14, 2012
by Alasdair MacLennan
A UCI Class 1 DH and 4X race, we visited the race in October in 2010 and loved every minute of it. Here's what Nikolay over at RAM has to say about the upcoming event:
It's the time of year when we optimistically start looking forward to longer days, warmer weather and hopefully drier trails. For a keen few it's also time to book some flights and get some early riding done in the parts of the world with more reliable sunshine and longer descents in an effort to limber up for the season ahead.

For the last few years, those in the know have headed out to an awesome season opener in Bulgaria, the Shambhala open cup. This year it's been promoted to a UCI Class 1 event so is sure to attract many top class riders. There's always been a decent international presence at this event, as well as many riders from the local area and neighbouring countries. The low prices, great tracks, steep drops in elevation and fairly reliable weather are all a bit much to resist.

A 3/4 day lift pass is included with the race fee of €35. Unlike a lot of races, you'll get a lot of time on your bike with chair-lift access getting you to the top efficiently enough to get plenty of practice runs in before raceday.

There's a Facebook page for the event page here as well as a seperate page for Brits planning on making the trip here.
- Email any questions and enquiries to: joe.hayhow@ram-bikes.com
- Flights should be booked to Sofia International Airport. The town of Sopot which hosts the race is a 1-1/2 - 2hr drive from Sofia. Booking a car in advanced is advised which will can be arranged to be delivered to the airport.
- Like any race, weather can effect the timetable, and early in the season the weather can be a bit changeable, but so far we've come to expect warm weather and low wind at this time of year.
- Accommodation is available in the town, early bookers will be able to reserve a room in a hotel, latecomers will be able to rent basic 'hostel' type accommodation and camping is also available. For more info e-mail info@ram-bikes.com

Our take on the last event can be seen here.
