It was totally intentional, when you’re going that fast trying not to overshoot things is worth being inventive, he sure was - epic skills!
  • 55 4
Especially with a hand injury, wouldn't want to be flat landing that.
  • 55 1
 insane move.
  • 8 5
 ooooooh no shit
  • 62 1
After watching replay looks like Brosnan did the same.
  • 13 2
Not seeing the "near disco"... Just like you tell the officer when he pulls you over for DUI. Hey all I have to do is stay between these two white lines.
  • 12 2
@Aar0nW: yeah weird how Warner and Claudio didn't see Brosnan. Must have been looking at their notes. What did they say in the german and french commentary ?
  • 11 9
yes they miss a lot. Rider goes through, tear off mid jump. Commentary about how it’s raining. Literally two riders later “whoa did you see that tear off midair!”
  • 29 2
 @TightAF: they can't catch everything.
  • 60 2
What's the big deal, he did an nose pick pick grind on a dirt tabletop to ice pick to manual out. Tripple combos, get this guy on slopestyle.
  • 19 3
i think that wheel contact patch size played a role
  • 8 4
@Aar0nW: I saw Brosnan do it on the live broadcast as well, Rob and Claudio didn't pick up on it before Gwins run though.

 @thewasp: indeed.
Blind to the fact that Gee, Remi or Bernard were untouchable too but why mention it when you can overhype? RedBull is getting similar to your averrage tv show.
  • 38 3
@mitzu: I am insanely happy that Gee is back. He really stamped his mark up there. He thoroughly deserves it too, he trains so hard.
  • 3 2
Dude, that was a nose bonk on the tuffed of grass
  • 39 13
Such a great scrub, such a poor looser, never stopped to congratulate the guys on the podium.
  • 35 4
 @Aar0nW: Brosnan's version looks faster: www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5tJsKBoYIs
  • 29 8
@mi-bike: Brosnan does it, no one bats an eye. Gwin does it, everyone loses their minds.
  • 6 1
@mitzu: feel free to watch it on another channel... oh wait...
  • 19 2
@dovahkiin13 @thewasp: The camera on the Brosnan scrub is too high, it's not nearly as obvious what he did.
  • 2 1
@viatch: I think you mean shape. Size is the same
  • 8 0
@Aar0nW: brosnan and gwin both started doing this a few years back on specialized. i first saw them do it at fort william where they were basically rolling the jumps

 @cunning-linguist: he sucks
  • 4 0
I could rewatch this clip all day
  • 2 2
@dovahkiin13: no one noticed everyone was looking the other way... no one wants to look at trousers that tight
  • 6 0
@dovahkiin13: Maybe there's another reason. The camera op had a tighter shot on Brosnan so we couldn't see the bottom of his wheels as well, thus we couldn't enjoy the precision of what was actually happening. The op was also likely expecting him to scrub it off the top like the 30 people before him. Gwin's shot was looser, or at least lower.
  • 2 1
Luca Shaw did it just as well as Brosnan and Claudio just says something about going off the track...
  • 4 0
Troy and Gwin pulling a Söderström: youtu.be/S7tKTsz-QAo?t=2m37s
  • 3 0
@Dazool: I noticed exactly the same thing! To be fair though, I thinks Gwin's was a bit more awesome.
  • 3 2
@brigand: Very Christlike to snub the dudes that rode better than you. WWJD?
  • 2 1
I think he expected more pop and it would have carried him further left. Based on the couple of other front wheel mishaps in that run. Imo. Obviously an insanely awesome rider but that much risk in a WC run..? Brosnan move it the one he was looking for I think

Leave it to Gwin to not win the race, yet still manage to be the talk of the day.

Very cool but nothing new. Go to any Southern California motocross track on a pro practice day and lines like that are burned into every jump on the track. This has to be something he’s learned from spending a lot of time on a motorcycle riding with fast guys.
  • 56 1
He is the fast guy. He was close to pro before downhill racing.
  • 15 3
There must be tons of videos you can share.
  • 88 1
Gwin turned Pro the year before I did .That took me 10 years, him like 2 races. We're both on Pinkbike now.... He's just not trolling it..
  • 3 0
I commented down below but Ryan Hughes came out to my home track in the 90s & did the same thing. People were blown away & lined up to watch him do it lap after lap.
  • 5 1
@enduroFactory: yep. in both instances, they were racing the track, not the other racers.
  • 5 0
He actually said it was an old moto move in his interview with Sven Martin (over on Vital). Never looks anything but in control though.. gonna go look for Troy’s one now!
  • 9 0
@pinkbike can you get Troy's one up please so we can compare side by side
  • 5 0
Gwin himself said, “The old moto skills making an appearance...” on instagram.
  • 2 0

 Troy Brosnan had a good scrub too www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5tJsKBoYIs>;
  • 5 0
 Thanks for that mate!
  • 6 1
and before Gwin, somehow nobody saw it?!?
  • 3 2
@dovahkiin13: He did indeed! As did many others, but only Gwin gets the 'love' for what ever reason? Don't get me wrong it was pretty slick, but he wasn't the only 1 on the mountain...

So di Martin Söderström 6 years ago: youtu.be/S7tKTsz-QAo?t=2m37s
  • 4 1
@m1dg3t: not one of those guys went as low or as right as Gwin did, and Brosnan did something similar but again it doesn’t look as low (might be the camera angle though)
  • 6 0
@Burnii: You can't see Brosnan's wheels in his. So it wasn't as noticeable.
  • 3 1
brosnan's bomb drop off the rock near the bottom was pretty rowdy as well. kid's got skills

@steezysam: Fukkin A man it was the nuts right!

So this must mean all those XC racers have been scrubbin masters for years now! Congrats Aaron that was saucy! I think I watched that clip 10 times so far
  • 20 2
There are huge booters in XC?
  • 6 0
@Rubberelli: ya idk what this xc comment means. But for real though, this is his bmx background and training on display.

@freestyIAM: read the comment above mine.

Physics dont apply to Gwin apparently. I want Neil deGrasse Tyson to explain this shit to me.

BS would have done it off the top of the jump. Nr would have double back flipped it and Josh bender would have tried to double it to the next jump. Lol
  • 17 1
 Steezus Christ that was smooth.
  • 17 3
Why the click-bait caption? He clearly eyes it up and smoothly hits his line.
  • 5 1
The setup almost looked accidental on the stream but the execution was clearly intentional
  • 11 0
I think I watched it 15 times before I realized you can slow it down with the controls at the bottom of the frame. Watched it 15 more times on slo-mo.
  • 12 0
That was as dope as Connor's scrub at leogang a few years ago.
  • 2 0
Any chance you got a video. I can't find it
  • 1 0
 +1 to see that thanks!
  • 5 0
@freeridejerk888: I can't find a video - unfortunately Red Bull have removed the full replay of the 2016 Leogang finals - but here's a screenshot someone took from the live broadcast. If only the next few frames were available, as the way he got fully sideways and kept so low (while at warp speed too) was pretty amazing.

  • 3 0
OMG that shot is INSANE @brownies:
  • 1 0
Nope freaking way Connor's step down scrub was 100%. All Gwin did was some sort of a hover nose wheelie air skid
  • 1 0
@brownies: that's the one! Sucks they took the replay down for no reason :/

I remember Warner just being like "okay, that was sick" hahaha.
  • 12 0
My wife was even like wtf did he just do.
  • 5 0
Your wife is better than my kids then, because I was freaking out, and again over the replay, and they were like, what dad? What happened?
  • 2 0
Your wife watches dh with you??
  • 6 0
@Lamename: Yes.. she used to race in an amateur division a couple of years ago too.
  • 13 5
Are we all getting a little too excited at watching someone rude off the side of a jump... this used to be common on the motoway jumps at Fort William until they rebuilt the lips to stop it happening and tape off the "miss the feature" line. #strava (thanks for the negative props in advance). Smile
  • 7 1
I say let the riders miss all the features they want, if the maneuver requires Jedi skills like that... this is spectacular to see!
  • 11 0
Cathro asked what a scrub is - well, there's Gwin's answer!
  • 7 0
Every expert racer or coach will tell you : you have to keep jumps as low as possible to be fast !
Gwin rear wheel was lower than the jump he scrubed.
It's a new move, the next generation of scrub it's an UNDERSCRUB !
Now kid you have yo train and learn the ultimate technic, let's jump lower than the jump !!!
  • 1 1
It's not new. Martin Söderström did this in 2012 in his Team Douche video. youtu.be/S7tKTsz-QAo?t=2m37s
  • 11 0
Wow, may not have had a great run but that won the day for me.
  • 9 0
I hope that will put an end to "i dont really enjoy seeing Gwin ride, he lacks unique style" comments. I started getting sick of those...

Yup. Seems to often apply.

I raced moto growing up in the 90's. One time Ryan Hughes came to race my home track (he didn't live too far). He did the same thing on the finish table, almost clipping the announcers box. it was wild, people lined up to see him to it lap after lap.
  • 7 0
Let’s just get some pegs on his bike so he can grind the side of stuff like Scotty Cranmer
  • 2 0
You do know there are clips on YouTube of him riding Bmx park.

  • 6 0
Each season he has a way of doing things that make it to the top of the highlights.
  • 6 0
Highlight of this race and definitly tactic
  • 4 0
Racing all comes down to tactics he was in the tape and going faster than a stabbed rat good enough for me and any other race find your line or find a faster one while racing
  • 3 0
Typical Motocross move, keeping low and power to the ground helps you to gain or make up valuable positions during a tight race. It doesn't work on all jumps though. Sweet move just the same.
  • 6 0
 Mesmerising
  • 5 1
that was out of this world and takes the word scrub to a new hight bad ass Arron and on a new ride Smile
  • 1 0
"Saving a near disqualification, or redefining the tactic? You decide." Hmm, might've been saving himself there, but whatever it was was completely intentional. Absolutely masterful. Just watch the way he controls that with his upper/lower body.
  • 3 1
Can we dub this "Buffing"....Gwin Buff" , "tyre buff" , "jump buffing","side buffing" etc....? Its not technically a "scrub" and it sort looks like he's buffing the tyre on the jump...
  • 5 1
 GodDAMN, that made me tingly.
  • 3 2
When he knows, he don't have great run just make sure you are down with style. too bad for him and the rest elite riders cant make great run at la bresse. Congrats for Maes, he did magic! Smile
  • 5 1
Doesn't win but sponsors are still happy.
  • 2 0
I believe Bulldog (Brook Mac), may of been another rider, done something similar also, Looked equally as impressive regardless. Hell of a race!
  • 4 1
No words....that’s something I will watch a thousand times. Skill-Ville!
  • 4 1
Troy did the same line the run before Aaron.
  • 6 2
Yeah, but camera angle was worse and many of us (including Claudio and Rob) missed it.
It even looked cleaner
  • 2 0
Uh,he’s just learning a new bike and having fun doing. Slick move, but def not near a DQ. Looks pretty in control
  • 1 0
That was pure magic, i actually thought my screen had some source of distortion. Lets really appreciate this man, Gwin is the Pele of mountain biking or Michael Jordan.

Black box or just a still image on mobile Android. I caught the race yesterday, but it would be cool to watch his scrub a few times...
  • 2 0
You should post the clip where he crosses the line and doesn't give a damn about anyone. That's redefining the jackass.
  • 2 0
Pretty awesome!!! Doesn’t look like any rules were broken to me!
  • 1 0
Come on Pinkbike... Show some Respekt for Brosnan who did the same bevor Gwin!

You say scrub I say nose wheelie skid the side of the landing tomato tamato
  • 1 0
Wish we could get side by side comparisons with this vs a normal scrub on the same jump
  • 2 1
I hope they won't put up the pols higher in future... would love to see more of that!!
  • 9 8
He went full moto. Too bad those huge, ungainly wheels got to him in the woods.
  • 4 2
 That was fucking exceptional!!
  • 4 3
but was it any faster, he will have lost the boost from the downslope as back wheel dragged the side..
  • 2 1
Most went to far almost to flat, not gaining maybe losing velocity.
  • 3 2
Well his speed on the speed trap wasn't as good as others..
  • 3 1
dam... those 29ers are out of control... lol
  • 2 1
Clever skillset so many on same jump going too far losing speed on landing, Gwin just looking at marginal gains
  • 7 6
Such a great scrub, such a poor looser, never stopped to congratulate the guys on the podium.
  • 1 2
That’s one of the things I took away from his run too, but if he’s pissed off any congratulations would be false and maybe he’s not a false guy.
  • 1 0
@pimpin-gimp: poor looser, as i said Smile
  • 2 1
I’m sure the outside nobble on his rear wheel left the track , does that mean a disqualification ?
