Brandon Semenuk dropping off the start ramp. It was pretty windy most of the time so the start ramp didn't see a whole lot of tricks in practice, or even in the contest... The course started with this step down, then into a pair of fairly tight 20 foot doubles, followed by a vert quarter channel gap, then a roller and a smaller double, followed by another roller and a smaller quarter.
crowds of people drinking beer and watching mountain bikers throw a bunch of crazy tricks. It's hard to beat a sunny day in the harbor with a cold beer or 6 and some great entertainment.
Waiting for the wind was a common occurrence at the event. Gully takes advantage of a windier spell to relax on the roll in...
Brett Tippie, the legend and the announcer....
Kurt Sorge with a huge no foot can over the first jump...
Jack Fogelquist, tailwhip on the first jump after the drop.
Anthony was boosting easily a foot or two higher than most riders on the vert wall channel gap, and carrying a lot of speed through the second half of the course because of it. His best trick of the day was probably a double truck on the jump you see here before the quarter.
He also let it get away from himself once and hung up his back wheel on the top of the vert wall. Bit of a messy palm but nothing too serious, Bonnie takes care of it...
This smaller jump in the second half of the course was a problem for a bunch of the riders. Mostly because if you made the tiniest mistake on the first couple of jumps and the vert wall channel gap, you didn't have enough speed to make it. Anthony Messere with enough speed to tailwhip over it. He also tailwhipped the step down...
Brandon Semenuk was one of a few other riders that were carrying plenty of speed over the channel and into the second half of the course...
Jordie Lunn, boosting over the channel...
While they were waiting for wind and course maintenance a few of the riders decided to session the small quarter at the end of the course. Mitch Chubey with a tailwhip high above the quarter.
Jamie Goldman was throwing barspins and tuck no's on the little ramp.
Gully, styling it up.
and Graham Agassiz, not to be outdone, throws some of his own style into it.
Best Trick gets underway and Jamie Goldman throws one of several sick flip nacs. I don't know what it is about this trick but I love it!
Mitch Chubey was super smooth and carried a lot of speed through the whole course. Enough speed for huge tailwhip transfer out of the last quarter. He also 360 double whipped the second jump and pretty much rode it out.
Graham Agassiz may have more of a reputation as a big mountain free rider but he's no slouch when it comes to dirt jumping either. Here he is with a flip indian air on the first jump
Eric Lawrenuk sticking the downside 360 whip on his second or third attempt. Back on the bike with enough time to do another trick if he'd wanted to...
stoked after his 360 downside whip...
Jordie Lunn going for the 360 flip, this was big crash number one...
Jordie after his first 360 flip attempt. Dirty, sore shoulder, sore neck, but determined to stick it. The landings were almost rock hard but he tried it a few more times, the last one was really close...
A sunny day and a beer garden next to the course, thousands of people came out to have a good time and watch the action dockside. Crowds like this make it just a little bit easier to throw down your bigger tricks.
Casey Groves was going for some bigger tricks including this 360 seat grab indian, almost made it, ball rode the landing. Casey also did a tuck no to tailwhip which was sick!
Mike Montgomery was another rider that had enough speed to trick the transfer out of the last quarter. He stuck this flair twice, and even in the same run as his 720
Goldman flip tuck no
The event was in an incredibly scenic location, and thousands of spectators showed up to watch. Brandon Semenuk over the channel in front of the Parliament buildings...
Montgomery with the best trick win for his 720. I missed it completely while I was waiting for his flair over the channel gap. When I asked him why he didn't tell me he was going to do it, he said "I didn't really plan to do it, just kind of went for it all of a sudden" He landed the 720 smoothly enough to keep his speed up through the whole course and throw a flair over the channel at the end. You'll notice that his fork is bent in this photo, the last thing he tried was a huge flip bar hop, he got it all the way around but ended up 50/50 casing the landing and burying his chainring all the way to the bb. The forks didn't make it...
Event organisers Jordie Lunn and Geoff Pendrel, without these guys the event never would have happened. Click to play and hear Jordie and a few others discussing what went down at best trick...
And youll probably get a reply like 'why this when you could get 831's or argyles' or would you rather have 2 or 3 sets of these? lol
