MSC# 3 Chile Challenge

Jun 9, 2010
by Long Nguyen
This past weekend was the third round of the Mountain States Cup series “Chile Challenge” that was held at Angel Fire Resort, NM.

It was a weekend that will never be forgotten because the mountain bike community suffered a tragic loss. This past weekend 17 year old Mojo rider, Craig Lange, sustained massive injuries during mountain cross practice on Friday, June 4th, and passed away June 5th. In respect to the family and the Mojo team, the mountain cross event was canceled.

More from the weekend inside,Day 1&2

On the evening of June 5th family, friends, and fellow riders gathered at the bottom of the Chile Express chair lift for a memorial to our fallen rider. Race Director Keith Darner and Scott “Doc” Branney organized this event. Instead of a moment of silence, a cheer was sent to Lange himself. This was a special moment that will forever be held in everyone’s hearts.

The mountain bike community is a special community that is very similar to a family. To support Craig Lange’s Family, most riders donated their mountain cross entree fees.

Day 3

photo

Sunday June 6th was a tough day for many, but the downhill riders kept their heads up high and did what racers do best… and that is to ride fast. The infamous world cup racecourse showed no mercy to the Cat 1,2, and 3 riders. The Pros knew that it could be anyone’s game. Chris Boice of Yeti Cycles National Team was the man to watch out for after qualifying 1st.

When crunch time was just around the corner, everyone looked out north at the dark sky wondering if it was going to pour rain. The pro riders geared up and started to head up the chair lift at 3pm for the start of the downhill finals. Tensions were high with the anticipation to do well.

Jacqueline Harmony of Vixen Racing/TLD/All Sedona showed off her powerful racing skills by taking the Pro Women category. Following pro women was pro men. As Pro men started to make their way down, Chris Boice was the last man at the top. The count down started and Boice was off, and the last man on course. The crowed waited anxiously at the bottom to see who would claim the number one spot. With the time of 4:43:07 and beating his fellow teammate Tyler Immer by only .27, Chris Boice of Yeti Cycles National claimed the number one spot in Pro Men Downhill. The rain held off until the last person was off the mountain. After winning the pro men downhill, Boice generously donated his winnings to Craig Lange’s family.

As everyone slowly packed up their cars and began their journey home, the third round of the Mountain States Cup came to a close. It was a weekend that will never be forgotten and Craig Lange will live on in our hearts and memories. Rest in peace buddy - wherever you may be. Cheers!

Yeah, and much love for everyone else who donated their entry fees and to anyone who has so generously made a donation... Hospital bills (any bills, for that matter) are the last thing the Lange family should have to ponder. The biking community is a great friend to riders and families in times of need. May everyone's hearts heal quickly and fully...

He overshot the landing by a good 6 feet. We, me and my buddy Jason, were standing at the jump watching when he came through and crashed. Its always nerve racking to be the first couple of people to get to a downed rider after a heavy crash. Huge props to the medical staff for getting there so fast and doing what they train to do. Best regards to his family and team Mojo. JJ Bikes, Tucson AZ

Craig was a teamate of mine on the Mojo Wheels team. I will always remember a fast junior x rider that could always put a smile on my face in even the most nervous moments leading up to the race. Craig will always be a brother to the Mojo Wheels race team and his fellow comrades in the world of biking... -Ben Robinson
