sure, the first miles you won't find very flowy trails. The first vertical meters will ask you a lot of technical skills... but later, in the lower sections you'll have still aprox. 2000 vertical meters of flowtrails... it's a promise!!! :-) You want a alpine proof? Check this out:
Hike bike up on shoulders up vertical rock face and super loose gravel at speed of 1km/hr.
When at peak, skid down on bike down vertical rock face and super loose gravel at speed of 1km/hr.
Takes skill, and might be fun for some, but with all that massive awesome alpine these guys have... I am sure there are much more fun things to be riding than this.
Riding that kind of steep exposed terrain is incredibly frightening. While it may not look as "fun" as some other videos on here...the technical ability of these guys is unreal! There are a few vids of these same guys and all of them are amazing.

mhm I don't think it is about fun and flow... but I assure anyone, whatever it is, it must be something big to those guys. You don't wake up a 4 in the morning then take your bike over 2000m and force yourself to like what you do... such dedication means - it feels daeeemm great to them, the stuff they do.
To me such riding would be: being in incredible mountain environment, trying to ride a mountain bike in a potentialy dangerous, maybe life threatening situation... be near the edge, and make the edge force me to do the right things, be it relax, good position on the bike, make fear push me to the limits of what I can, empower me instead of paralyzing. Make me do only the right thing, make me do the best thing I can do in that situation, therefore separate me from my everyday life as nothing else can - provide 100% consciousness, 100% presence.
I'm Eurpean, even Austrian (the Alps make up like 2/3rd of our country) and I disagree with the statment that "most Europeans love vertriding", if vertriding means stumbling down terrain you had to carry your bike up through before.
a) It's not "vert", or vertical. Vert is the upper end of a halfpipe, just ask any BMXer. d) Most Europeans I know still like to go more than walking speed on their bikes, both up- and downhill!
cathar, you're right. I'm not Austrian but I live in Austria. But maybe it's just me but I have only met this kind of riding in Europe. So it was a surprise for me. I may have just exaggerated a bit because I haven't met anyone who does stuff like this before I came to Austria. Great stuff anyway.
I remember seeing pictures from this trip a few months ago, had one as the background on my phone for a while. This terrain looks seriously gnarly, it takes some skill to navigate it for sure.
Light absolutely popping at 2:00. Amazing colors in that 5 second shot. Makes me want to ride... and I kinda dig the mellow vibe of the music, fits the meditative calm it takes to ride some of that kind of stuff with confidence and grace.
Wow that is how I want to exist in the high mountains! I love the flow, the tail whip turns and just how in control they are. Sitting in the winter in Canada watching this is making me itchy to get my flow on! Might just have to go ride a snowy trail anyway.
I thought the video was quite good actually. Although it could have been longer...riding that sort of terrain is extremely hard, it also looks like alot of fun!
^ NICE!!! haha This is the first time i've ever fallen to sleep while listening to Motorhead.
btw, I have a 301 (amazing bike!), and this vid ain't doing it justice. Is that Bob Ross and his cousin out looking for some new happy scenes to happily paint?

I'm with the "looks kinda boring" crowd. This actually looks like stuff I used to hike and ride around here before I had a car and could go to where better riding is. Still Props For the effort and nice footage. \
That's true. For people used to speed and air, it does appear so. BUT, it sure as hell is fun to do!! The feeling that one mistake will send you plunging to your death is just intense. This you can only get by actually doing this kind of riding.
Is this not an example of free riding at its most purest form. Im sure if bear claw or Sorge rode that same mountain there imagination and skill would have turned that mountain into the next Mecca.
These are real mountains you are seeing here which are at least 2000meters. They're not desert mountains like Virgin Utah or the Gobi Desert. It's just a different kind of riding. But hey, I'm a huge fan of Bearclaw and Sorge, I'm sure they would use similar technique under these conditions and not simply ride it all out.
