The Top 6 Greatest Moments of Aaron Gwin's Career (So Far)

Jan 23, 2019
by James Smurthwaite
What a twist f fate for Aaron Gwin. After a puncture ruined his winning run last round in Lenzerheide it looked as if the weather was going to derail his plans again in Mont Sainte Anne. Gwin however was having none of it and put down one of the greatest runs of all time to do the impossible.

11 years of racing, 20 wins, 45 podiums, five World Cup overalls - if he retired today, Aaron Gwin would go down as one of the all-time greats in downhill. The truth is, with a new move on the horizon, there’s no slowing him down any time soon.

Let’s take a look back on some of the greatest moments of Gwin’s career so far.

The biggest win - Val di Sole - 2012

2011 and 2012 were Gwin’s most dominant years in World Cup racing. He claimed nine victories in just two seasons with a near clean sweep in 2011. He stamped his authority in Val di Sole in 2012 though with an earth-shattering, 8-second winning margin. It was reminiscent of Sam Hill’s heroics on the same track at the 2008 Worlds with one crucial difference, Gwin stuck the landing.

The Joining Specialized edit

Gwin isn’t really an ‘edit’ rider but there’s one that really stands out. Murdered out, silky smooth and brutishly fast, this was Gwin trying to put all the winter controversies behind him and prove one thing - joining Specialized would not slow him down.

Racing on the rim - Leogang - 2014

There aren’t many riders who could roll down 78th and call it a ‘greatest moment’ but there aren’t many riders who can charge down Leogang on the rim like Aaron Gwin.

The Chainless Massacre - Leogang - 2015

Could it be the great moment of downhill racing? Aaron Gwin’s chain snapped out of the gate in Leogang in 2015 and the rest is history. Not only did he take the win on the most bike parky track on the circuit but he was also fastest through the speed trap by more than 3km/h.

The Homecoming - Windham - 2015

People describe Gwin’s years on Specialized as a fallow period but in reality, the pace never abandoned him. That was showcased fully at Windham in 2015 where he put 3.5 seconds into the field on a short, flat out track. Bearing in mind the rest of the podium was split by just 1.2, this was a hugely significant win.

The Rain Man - Mont Sainte Anne - 2017

Greg Minnaar seemed like he had the 2017 World Cup overall sewn up by the mid-point in the season, which left Gwin just one option, throw caution to the wind and hope for the best. In Mont Sainte Anne he proved how much he was willing to risk by slithering down inside lines nobody else was taking and riding flat out on a track that had been drenched by a mid-race storm. Gwin took the first of two monumental wins on his way to his fifth overall title, while Minnaar was left stuck in the mud, cursed with bad luck.

I was at Windham in 2015 for his win! What an amazing weekend! After the race, the Syndicate boys were hanging out drinking, the Athertons fired up the grill and were handing out hotdogs and burgers to anyone. Gwin signed some gear and handed it out. Really super cool weekend! Super pumped that WCDH is coming back to the US this year!

AG1 doesn't look right wearing anything other than a Troy Lee D kit! You guys need to work on getting that man back. That murdered out Spec TLD kit was AG1 Man in Black best. Imagine that kit combo on So Cal's finest, Intense Cycles. Perfection.

Love the end of the Chainless Win :
Brosnan: "you motherf'er!"
Gwinn: "suspension works good without a chain".

Amazing! My fav is defo MSA in the rain after all that and he truely smashed it. I was drinking a beer, out my seat screaming at the TV; man, those days are the best. This racing is the best! Hats off to all the folk involved. Its immense! Bring it on 2019; can't wait - yaaasssssssss!

The mid-line correction off that little rock in the rain at MSA are the little nuances that Gwin has ready to go in his arsenal that no one else has. That's the kind of move 99.9% of humans have to consciously try to do... but I have a feeling it is automatic for Aaron.

Glad someone else remembers that !

the new Intense [per Paul Aston] is the best bike for corrections. Match made in California to win 2019?

I was lucky enough to be treated to the run at MSA. Such a crazy, wet day.
  • 5 1
I was there too! Crazy day for sure.

Moir was the first of the top guys to be clearly faster than all the others in Les Dalles, then I think Bruni was very fast too, but Gwin’s run was otherworldly.

I couldn’t wait to watch the replay.

@AProulx: My cameras broke in the rain so we enjoyed it from the last drop and it was nuts!

@mtbmaniatv: I was down there too, and my phone/camera also got killed by the rain. When he won, my daughter took off running for the finish line and got a high five from Gwin. I've never been a huge fan of his, but that run was spectacular to witness and I have incredible respect for him as a rider.

@AProulx: @mtbmaniatv @brightfff I Facebook lived (to save for posterity) the last 12ish minutes of the race (Danny's run to the end) and the ensuing mayhem for a minute or so. I just checked to see I could still access it and I could. It'd be sweet if I could share it here somehow....

I was there...too drunk to remember. It seemed like a great run!

I hope his best years are to come.

Man that margin on the Windham run was just crazy for how short a track it was and in the dry. Love the fact it was on home soil with spectators running on track behind him. MSA and chainless Leogang are probably my favourites though.
  • 3 1
Is my opinion that if Gwin would have stayed with Trek for another 3 years instead of jumping to Specialized, He would have 5 or more race wins perhaps even that elusive World Champs. What if?

Glad to see the WC come back to the States, would love to go to MSA Worlds this year!

Best of luck to Aaron, Niko and Jack. Its new INTENSE TEAM is awesome!!! Let the races being!!!!!!

Great videos and an incredibly talented rider. I hope we get to see him at that level for many more seasons. Was it just me, or did he seem to have a tough time keeping the front end down on that Speshy promo vid?

The Specialized edit? You gotta be bloody kidding me. His breakthrough segment in The Tipping Point, set to Savior ripping up the golden So-Cal dirt on a YETI 303 is one of the most iconic segments in mtb and Gwins best by far. With world champion Gee Atherton opening the segment, clearly blown away by Gwins 10th at his first WC "No one does that". That was the moment AG took thr mtb world by storm. Your mediocre specialized vid doesn't even come close.

Get your shit together PinkBike.

Spent a lot of the day of DH practice @ Windham 2015 marshaling where the DHers crossed the XC course. Was amazed how humble and friendly they all were. By the 3rd crossing we were mostly on a first name basis. Never forget the crowd reacting when Gwin left on the lift for his run as he started last. When he crossed the finish line, it was Crazytown. What a day !

After the Leogang match, that EX471 Rim showed up at every bike show in the world. In addition, the game had become an issue among people who were not interested in bicycles.

Aaron's time in Specialized was my favorite, even though he didnt achieve many things as when with Trek, i think his time there was the most trascendental on his career.
  • 2 2
Gwin's finest moment for me was his first World Cup win on Specialized at VDS. Lot's of riders have had that big money deal, suffered a setback and never been seen again. After 2013 to start 2014 on the top step underlined his amazing level of commitment.

Dude is just a beast! Wow.

 Brosnan: You Mother***ker!

His first ever WC win was a huge moment, but VDS and MSA are my 2 favorites. incredible career.

Take the puncture run out and put his section from 3 minute gaps in. Slaying it on the yeti

Is Gwin going to give all the bike companies a world cup overall? Next is GT after Intense, right?
  • 2 0
Even some of the elite racers would kill to have just one of these moments in their resume.

Really interesting to see how much the sport has grown... at least crowd wise! That "crowd" in 2011/12 has NOTHING on today's crowds. Happy to see the growth!

The Windham race run from 2015 still makes me laugh. Incredible. His thumb is all healed properly, so you know what's gonna happen this year, with that M29.
