Adam Brayton Homestory

Adam Brayton has been hit by a break-in overnight and has had 5 bikes stolen. Among the missing bikes are 2 Hope HB 160s (1 gloss, 1 matte), a custom painted Scott Gambler, a Vitus Sommet ebike and a Specialized Stumpjumper.

All of the bikes have some small details that make them distinct such as, Ohlins shocks, Adam's red World Champs custom brakes on the Vitus or a white back wheel on the Stumpjumper, so keep an eye out if you're in the North of England or beyond. Photos of all the bikes are below:

 @mtbswindler: death to all thieves

@scotttherider: ive always wanted to bait people with an open garage full of bikes and just be sitting in the back with a shotgun... i dont own a shotgun- and probably a good thing too as i question the legality of this in CA, but it doesnt feel wrong to me.
  • 6 0
@Rstetina: Tool thieves, bike thieves and those who prey on the vulnerable should be knee capped.
I like your shotgun idea, personally, claymores would be quite satisfying.

I feel your pain. I had two bikes nicked just over two weeks ago. What these people don’t get or care about is the fact that these things aren't just bikes to us. It’s our head space, our social group our holidays and mental health to mention but a few. These people are the lowest of the low and if I had the chance I would go all Law Abiding Citizen on them. I hope there arse is left like a Bagel in prison. Yea I am still sore about it all lol.
  • 22 0
I don't think you realize how few fucks these meth heads give about your head space or social group. Junkies just tryna score.

 Bagel... LMAO!

Feel your pain bro, had a custom Nomad and custom TR500 get stolen from my garage about 2 weeks ago.

Both were ground anchored and locked with gold standard chains. Door was too secure so they went in through the roof! Used some kind of power tools to cut the chains.

My neighbour called me to tell me there were guys on my garage roof but I couldn’t get out quick enough and actually saw them getting away.

My neighbour called the Police whilst they were in the garage.

My Mrs called them as I was running down the road with a metal pole in my hand but they were long gone.

Police didn’t even come out till 8 days later and that was only because I’d submitted a complaint!

Hate these scumbags and the police were beyond useless. I actually live less than a mile away from a huge regional Police station too! still raging

BASTARDS, stealing a person's work tools is the lowest of the low, fingers crossed the Kestrel gets them back.

Even broken up there are a lot of unique parts there, hopefully they'll slip up, and hopefully he has a crew that can administer the required amount of punishment.

This is suspicious - "Performance Mountain Bike" www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/424969948178568
  • 2 3
 Are you broken?
  • 13 0
What type of performance does it perform I wonder? Why wouldn't they just advertise an Intense M16? Does seem very suspicious.
  • 5 0
Suspicious, but not Adam's bike. Wonder why they didn't say M16.
  • 19 0
For those who are neg propping - I contacted the seller - he was vague and didn't answer some questions. I stand by the suspicious.
  • 7 0
@neimbc: Probably stolen. What's on the frame? Masking tape?
  • 11 0
"performance mountain bike" that guy has no damn clue what he has on his hands... definitely suspicious.
  • 9 0
Hell, that thing might not even exist — by that I mean he’s in possession of nothing but a photo. You send him money, you get nothing.

Just looking at the seller... Is politically incorrect for me to say, but Elliot J. is the one and only black rider I've ever seen.
  • 5 2
@ismasan: please elaborate on why Elliot Jackson's ethnicity has anything to do with a 'suspicious' Facebook advert? I'm all ears.

lol, I knew it'd be missinterpreted. Don't get me wrong, I've shared work, house and even bed with black people, but someone other than me (and they agree in this) had to have notice they don't mtb

Mods, is there a way to report comments?
  • 4 3
chill out guys, me and my black coworkers had a laugh about this today. Do you know what's a very white thing? having a thin skin Wink
  • 6 2
@socratease: Why did I envision you saying this cowering in a corner, pissing your pants?

“Mods... mods? Um, yes, the scary man said things I don’t like. Can you remove it please?”

Don’t like what the man says? Engage him. Confront him. Refute him with your logic and words. Don’t be a little tattletale. It’s weak.
  • 2 2
@ismasan: Cool story. So black guys don't ride mountain bikes, certainly not high end mountain bikes... so the seller must have got it how? I hope you're not suggesting because the guy is black he might be in receipt of stolen goods? It smells alot like that's precisely what you suggested. All these black friends of yours, tell me, did you let them know that was your hypothesis?

I do not understand the reasons behind this, they cannot sell the bikes or use them as everyone remotely involved in MTB will recognise them, what is the point of stealing them then?

These people are oxygen thieves and f*cking waste of skin .....
  • 9 0
unfortunately there are some people with no connection to the mtb community who like to ride around on a trick looking bike. A few times now I've seen scrawny looking teens cruising around their estate on a kashima coated downhill bike
  • 5 0
You can take all the parts off these bikes and sell them with no chances of being caught and then throw the frames into a dumpster.
  • 3 0
@vikb: Exactly, it's been known that even in garage break ins with bikes chained to ground anchors... that thieves will simply saw through the frames and sacrifice the whole bicycle as a unit in effect. If the parts are known to hold more value collectively, they can be stripped and sold on. Thieves of this type are not idiots, clearly it was a target given the value and profile of Adam. I feel so sorry for him too, he's had a year he'd rather forget with the racing too. Hope the police get a result.

I have lived 25 years in mtns/mtb territory in 3 areas and never known anyone to get their bike stolen. Not sure why, although out West felony theft starts at about 1000 dollars item value. So steal one 2014 trek fuel with 90mm stem, 640 mm bars and sx components and get caught, and your voting rights, employment options, and general standing get taken...although free medical, dental, room and board at a state facility of a states choosing....

I caught a guy in the process of pulling my Knolly off the roof of my car in the parking lot of a bike shop in Santa Cruz. I had locked it with that tiny cable lock roof racks sometimes have thinking “I’m running in for replacement tire bacon strips, it won’t take more than a minute”. My naive ass came out to the sight of some twatwaffle trying to shake the front wheel of my pride and joy out of the rack. a*shole saw the homicide in my eyes and dropped my bike, scraping a flat pedal down the side of my car, and jumped into the back of a gold Infinity i30 and slammed the door behind him, I broke my hand mistaking real life for a movie and trying to punch through a window, and some woman in the front seat sped off. I got the plate as they sped off and thought at least some justice could be served but the cops told me they didn’t have time for “small” stuff like this and they weren’t going to do anything. So I posted their description and the car’s description and plate all over Craigslist buy and sell and anywhere else I could think of that someone might try and flip a stolen bike. It’s been over a year and I still get irrationally upset when I think about it, I feel like I need to go ride after writing this

sad!! My Transition Smuggler was stolen in Edinburgh this summer. Nobody I was talking about bike thieves was upset. Seems normal in UK. totally crazy.

 sad but true

Edinburgh is terrible for bike theft. I’ve had 5 bikes stolen over the last year and a half. Both locked up and out of the shed
  • 5 0
@Cammy14: it’s not just Edinburgh.. bike theft is everywhere. If you’ve 5 bikes stolen in the last year and a half then you should be like me and never leave your bike alone outside.
  • 7 0
Note to self: don't bring bikes when visiting the UK
  • 1 0
@nateisgrate: mine was locked on the rack under a cover, with two locks and an alarm sling. However - without this UK would be mtb heaven Smile
  • 5 0
I never understand the reason behind listing the custom bits, there's a good chance these thieves are on the popular mtb sites, they now have a list of everything to swap over so that the bike is not longer recognisable by these parts

Damn that sucks. Makes me want to put tracking chips in my bikes.

In addition to locking my bikes I have a Wyze camera pointed at the bikes and garage door. It has motion and sound sensing so I get instant notifications if there is movement. The cameras connect to your wifi router and only cost $26.00US. No additional fees. I have 4 of them around the house.

Horrible little RATS, I had a Vitus Sentier VRS and a Cube Reaction TM stolen within less than a year, the Vitus was actually stolen from Cycle Republic in Liverpool, I entered the shop with my bike was looking round for 10 minutes and then noticed my bike was gone, when I entered the shop there was a guy on the till at the front of the shop right by the front doors, when I returned no bike and no member of staff and none of the staff seen it get stolen, all they could offer is a discount on a new bike, and I am really not exaggerating or taking the piss when I say this but if all the display bikes in the shop weren't locked down I would of taken one of them for compensation and never step foot in there again
  • 2 0
It sucks and I can empathize. I've had 2 bikes stolen from me. Fortunately, the last bike that was stolen my renters insurance covered the loss.

I would highly recommend people who can afford to own fancy expensive bikes to invest in security cameras. The higher resolution and night optic cameras are the best ones to get. Even if the security cameras don't capture the face of the person it's still counts for insurance purposes.

I understand that it isn't always about the money but losing something that has memories and was custom made. However, it would be a lot worse to lose your bikes and have to shell out 100% to get new bikes as well.

I wish bike thieves were granted harsher punishments when convicted to set an example.

Any device to put in the frame to locate the bike? I mean a small light and economic one?
  • 2 0
I haven't had a bike stolen yet, thank goodness, but at my school people slash tires, so I pump my tires up to 115 psi on my road bike, use sealant and that way if they do slash it they get soaked in sealant and have their ears ringing.

No one mentioned the demand side of things. I have no idea who buys stolen bikes or parts, or how., but these customers are driving the thievery.

Thousands of bikes stolen. Lots of parts for sale . Ask lots of questions before you buy that used bike part for a song. Or you are helping to perpetuate the theft problem. Please people don't buy stolen parts.

It's pretty obvious that pros with access to free ebikes want free ebikes for training purposes.
He's a downhiller with a bit of private land to use. What if his mate has to go to work? He can't drive his own landy up and down all day. An ebike is going to do a similar job for him.
  • 1 2
Yes the thieves did him a favor

Time for GPS locators, I keep saying this.
Anyone using Tile or something similar?
  • 4 0
I've had the car key fobs an to be honest, more trouble than they're worth. They would de'connect all the bloody time with no warning. Same for the batteries, they run out an no warning. I would test the fob to see if it was working an nearly every time it was de'connected. Blue toth so only good for around 10ft
An as for theft, it only works for people that have the app, I reckon google and/or apple could come up with a more viable system with the amount of android an Iphone users.

The other problem is all a thief has to do is search for stolen bikes in an undisclosed area, find that the bike has a tracker an remove it. This happens with cars all the time.
