Total stage domination would be the theme of the day in the men's race as Martin Maes made it a clean sweep of all stages on the way to the top of the podium. While Isabeau Courdurier put her demons of past Rotorua results to rest with an emotional win to kick off her 2019 season.

The overnight rain made a few bits of the track slick but did nothing to slow things down in the forest, and if anything conditions on some stages were made better. After years of rain at this venue, it was a welcome change to see the weather not play a factor in the results.

Behind the front runners, the remaining podium positions shifted for much of the race eventually settling down as riders headed into the final stage of the day. For the men, it would be Keegan Wright and Florian Nicolai in second and third. While for the women we saw some new faces with Morgane Charre, and Bex Baraona flanking Isabeau. Further down the leader board were lots of other fresh faces, proving that for 2019 anything can happen before the series reaches its climax in 6 months time.

Next week things will pick right up again as the series returns to Tasmania for a back to back round. It will be interesting to see if the riders carry the momentum of Rotorua forward and begin to feel the pressure of new expectations.

Wow, great pictures and coverage! I'm psyched for next week, should be a good one!

I had a feeling the bike is what matters most. Maybe I'll order a GT Force this week.

Great result for Matt Stuttard. Spent most of last season injured and gets dropped by Hope and then gets 21st in the 1st EWS of the year
  • 2 0
Hope have dropped everyone except for brayton haven’t they? I don’t think Craig Evans rides for them ether.

@thenotoriousmic: Rae Morrison is running their stuff this season I believe

Poor report, always focused in the same riders. José Borges did 2nd in two stages and no mension here. Masters didn't race? Better job for the next one.
  • 5 0
Well said mate! Borges is constantly overlooked in these reports. But wait, I got a feeling he's gonna make pinkbike talk about im in ews Madeira!

@PaulinhoCascavel: last time in Madeira he definitely got a mention. Wonder why ;-)
  • 3 0
@davetrumpore: If I remember it correctly he made a mistake when interpreting the rules regarding medical assist and got disqualified. As if bigger names never got a DQ for similar stuff on a EWS race. That being said, does that mean he only gets mentioned for the bad reasons?
Either way, I got a feeling this is going to be is season and that he's going to make the Portuguese people proud racing at home. And also look out for other Portuguese riders like Emanuel Pombo and Paulo Batista racing in their home turf.

@davetrumpore: what a shitty comment by someone that should be imparcial, you would have been better to by saying nothing
  • 5 5
@tiagomano: others would call it cheating which is what it was... No need to be impartcial when those are the facts.
  • 4 0
@davetrumpore: At least that he was at this photo www.pinkbike.com/photo/15896342 and came clean Wink
  • 2 0
@davetrumpore: He is my friend and when that happened i told him that what he did was stupid and was not at all good for his carrier, but then again, that was in training, they let the guy race and do 5º overall in the first day and then they disqualified, if that was the decision, would have to be done right away, not when he rides well

but my comment to you was about you as employee of this site, and as a reporter/photographer you should do just that, tell the story either by photos or worlds, not give your opinion on the comments on something totally unrelated when someone was saying that the guy didn't get coverage with 2 2º stages finishes on the race and a good place overall
  • 7 3
@tiagomano: a guy getting disqualified for outside assistance isn't an opinion. It's what happened (and it was not during training).

Facts and facts.

He finished the day in Rotorua outside the top 10. Sorry we didnt post a photo of him for you but we can only post so many. We've posted plenty of him in the past from other rounds so not sure what conspiracy theory you guys are going for.
  • 2 3
Guess who filmed and denounced him to the EWS organization? The protégé Wyn and the GT team
  • 5 3
@Jmcpap: @Jmcpap: well when you are given an injection in your thigh before taking the start I'd say it was proper for them to have concerns. It was apparently for a sore wrist, but regardless, someone giving him an injection is pretty obvious outside assistance (and looks bad in many other ways)... Hence the appropriate DQ... But you want to make the guys who saw it and reported it as the problem? Now that's some bias haha
  • 3 1
@davetrumpore: I don't believe there is a conspiration going to frame Zé Manuel Borges. I was a bit struck by your reaction to my first coment in a way it led me to believe the squids don't like him. He wasn't mentioned on vital slideshow either and only a litle bit on the EWS highlights video.
But don't take me the wrong way, I know you guys have a lot of work bringing this reports for us all. instead I would preffer to believe you just chose the best photos overall and that you didn't have a really nice one of Zé Manuel to add to this recap.
And, like I said above, I think you'r gonna really need one in the Madeira round. Ahahha

Keep up the good work!

Did Maes end up riding the 27.5 29er combo?
  • 2 0
Pretty interesting to see he put that much time on everyone too. #bigsmallwinsitall
  • 6 0
@asboites: can't tell what's more rare on the bike, the fact that it has that wheel combo or 12spd xtr...
  • 3 0
So do I get a 29er and change the back wheel, or get a 275 and change the fork and front wheel?
  • 2 0
That photo of Morgane Charre, wow! The quality of shots in the photo epics is always outstanding, so to be a stand out among stand outs is something else. Love the sneaky inside line behind her too.
  • 4 3
That's no inside line behind her, just dead grass. What you can't tell is that it would be a two meter cliff into a run off ditch if you did try to ride that way... Let's say it wouldn't end well haha.
  • 1 0
@davetrumpore: if I tried to ride the vast majority of these guys' and girls'lines it wouldn't end well ????
  • 4 0
What kind of mechanical did Sam Hill have? There is nothing here and nothing in the live race feed on the EWS page.
Cheers.
  • 3 0
Congrats to the new faces on the podium. The racing is going to be great this year.
  • 3 0
"Bit of a slow start in 18th" aye cos any of us reading this could knock that oot any day we ride.
  • 1 0
I thought that comment was a bit off too. No doubt he's aiming higher, but 18th is certainly nothing to be scoffed at. His average EWS position last three years have been 17th, 16th and 17th , so hardly off the pace!
