Finals Photo Epic - Red Bull Rampage 2017

Red Bull Rampage 2017

The morning of finals started with an incredible show as athletes tried to recoup lost practice time from the day before. After being shut down by wind, most had left the canyon in the afternoon and still had sections of their runs that they had yet to hit. Riders wrapped up any last minute line adjustments and final speed checks, and by the time the sun rose above the mountains the venue was full of fans, music, and excitement as people eagerly anticipated the big show.

Reed Boggs and Connor Macfarlane both withdrew from the event due to crashes that they suffered during practice, but the event went off without any broken bones or catastrophic injuries, something that had seemed unavoidable in the past. The wind cooperated to allow the competition to continue without delays - also a first in recent history - and also to allow the competitors the freedom to throw down everything they had envisioned. Watching the riders tackle their lines all over the mountain, each with their own unique combination of building and riding style had the crowd in awe from start to finish.

When the dust settled, local Ethan Nell was in third place. The relative newcomer came up a little short on his first run but secured a podium spot on his second run of the day by tricking out some of his more exposed line up top. The commentators could be heard often talking about how much big moves higher up can impact your score. We can expect to see a lot more out of this 20-year-old in the years to come at Rampage.

bigquotesI’ve made a lot of good memories out here and today at the end of the first run I was extremely emotional; I was just about tearing up at the bottom. I was just so relieved after the whole ten-day build and a lot of mental stress. Seeing my family; my four-month-old and four-year-old, my wife, my dog. But then the second run – the gloves were off. I was trying to win.Cam Zink

Cam Zink, who won in 2010, had an incredible goose-bump inducing run that included a straight line down the chute off the top - also referred to as 'the scar' - and a backflip off his massive drop before the road. Sorge would be the only rider to bump him off the hot seat and push him into giving a balls-out second run. Unfortunately, when he opted to add a front flip on the last jump, it got away from him and he crashed – solidifying his second Rampage second-place finish.

best news from this year's rampage-no catastrophic injuries.

everyone finished a run?! How crazy is that?

Totally! everybody threw down good runs and minimal carnage. Great coverage too. Can't ask for much more.

And let me tell you what: No catastrophic injuries means everyone is a winner

 @upchuckyeager - YES!

It was the best Rampage in a long while. The weather was almost perfect, everyone was so on point and pushing it on their second runs... ah, so happy for everyone. I really wish Zink landed his front flip though!
  • 15 0
Honestly I think the whole thing seemed more relaxed and professional than in years past. It seemed like the riders had more time (I know they didn’t in reality) to finish up they’re lines. Everything just looked more properly and safely done. The landings looked correct and with a better margin for error. Take offs were built properly etc. It’s like they all brushed up on Newtonian physics and applied it this time. Yes of course still on the edge of human abilities but less haphazard with some of the features. Everything looked far less hurried and more calculated for success and safety. I for one am glad. This sport has too few athletes that ride at this level. We don’t need them to keep going down to spinal injuries or worse. Props to all those diggers and builders.
  • 5 2
@fattyheadshok: now that you mentioned it, yeah I must agree, I somehow felt less anxious watching it. Two years ago when Paul went down it was disgustingly sketchy. That thing when Rogatkin fell down and kept riding, I was like what the F do you let him ride?! What the F was that?! Last year was sketchy too, but 2 years ago was absolutely awful.

I can’t put my finger on it why, but this year it all looked calmer.

Hey Geoff, yeah I've a few questions:
-Why no Brett Rheeder in the top3 after that phenomenal second run?
-Whats up with Steezburgers caveman getting no love?
-Bizet?

Thanks!
  • 66 13
Steezburger hesitated and put a foot down beofre dropping into that double drop.
Rheeder - slopestyle run much?
Bizet - slopestyle run much ?

Again this is big mountain, not slopestyle. Line difficulty, air/amplitude, fluidity of the line, tricks/style. You have to hit all 4 boxes. Rheeder and bizet only hit 2.

Yeah for me underrated was definitely:
1. Bizet 2. Lacondeguy 3. Rheeder 4. Kyle strait - the most stylish guy for me that day 5. Steenbergen

We wasn;t there so probably pinkbikers are wrong
  • 7 5
@SnowshoeRider4Life: Exactly. I laughed so hard when the crowd boo-ed his score. Bizet could have scored a few points higher but it was pretty bang on judging.
  • 9 5
@SnowshoeRider4Life: so if a rider gets down the hill with style skill an steeze they get accused of being slope style? With the course being so sculpted an smooth you could argue that all but a few riders are slope style this year with that logic??
I'm not debating the final judging but, Rheeder an Tommy G definitely should've scored in the 90's
  • 2 1
@nojzilla: there runs liked the size and the overall line difficulty.
  • 1 1
@nojzilla: Compared to everyone else's lines.... yeah their lines were going down the most slopey and worked on part of the hill. Tommy's both way 3 drops was one of the sickest combos of the day but overall, I'm happy the judges weighed a lot on their upper section.
  • 1 0
It is what it is mate.. it is what it is! Judges can't please everyone.. From my point of view all the athletes deserved to win! I wish I could ride like them

@xXK9Xx: I disagree. those were LARGE hits, and they were way up on the mountain in more risky areas. They were also hip jumps and most of them we blind. Sorge also dropped in with a double drop. The flip stepdown was probably the 3rd largest in rampage history as well. He easily got all 25 pts in fluidity, air/amplitude, and style. I would say he lost a few points in line difficulty. Hard to tell vs Zink.

Nah. We all got robbed in a way because Semenuk crashed out. Every time he nails a run, he changes the pace of freeride. (Notice all the nose bonks this year?) Feel for him, really wanted to see him stomp it.

The riding was so beyond judging anyhow, they all smashed.

That's true actually. Everyone realized it's a quick trick that adds nice points.
  • 35 6
I don't get the whole bizet got robbed thing, his line was misseing a few beats and even he himself said so! I thought T-Mac deserved a little better and could have scored higher if the claw had let him build a kicker on their huge drop to flip it but otherwise I think the judging was decent.

Tmac pretty much always gets underscored by a point or two. Im starting to wonder why. His style is rampage. Speed. Flow. Tech. Big gsps and drops. Solid style and trick choice. I could see him in 4th. But for the most part the judges were pretty on it this yeat

Gotta remember that Bizet's biggest hit landing collapsed at the eleventh hour so his planned run had to be discarded an a new one improvised at the last moment. An he still rode with bucket loads of style an precision despite. Gotta respect that
  • 2 3

  • 3 0
@WAKIdesigns: All points on point. Ignore the judging, decide who won in your head and accept that everyone else will too. As others have said, you can ignore the scores and appreciate so many other things about the event that just unfolded, e.g., Sorge pissed off that Zink didn't land the front flip was pure humanity.
  • 11 0
@BenPea: These guys are ALL friends. They're all pulling for each other. I can't tell me how many people talked about being super bummed that Reed and Connor didn't get to do their runs.

Zink is a legend. Dude really has it all going for him right now. Amazing career. Rad family. Riding like a monster... etc. He lands that flip and it's hands down the best run in history. There's no possible way he doesn't win. Without it... Zink or Sorge both had equal claim to it. I leaned towards zink. Others towards Sorge. But both runs were insane. Quite honestly... all 18 runs were nuts. Don't even bother looking at R-Dogg's score. That run was so fun to watch. T-Mac. Tom's cave man. Tommy G's back to back 3's going regular and oppo. No body is doing that. That run was so sick.

Watching all these riders pull for each other is amazing.

Thank you for your ongoing support of mountain biking, the World Cup coverage is great and Rampage is awesome.

Just one thing, can we have a new venue next year please? A blank canvas, new lines, the unknown.

Thanks again, Al

Ps. Sorry but I don't really like that drink you make, even with vodka it's a bit too sweet, stick to action sports
  • 17 6
Stick to action sports? Big Grin
And where do you think they get the money to pay for it from? What do you actually think Red Bull is?
Every single event that Red Bull supports has been paid from sales of that sweet drink. If people stopped drinking it, there would be no Rampage, the Rampage is basically a long and expensive TV ad for their drink, which is their only source of income.

  • 3 1
@Extremmist: Redbull is a media business company, not a "sweet drink" company who sold billions of cans. The taste of that sit is horrible,I think only 1 of 100 people like Redbull drink. As a media company they are very good, Redbull means extreme sports like DH,MotoGp,F1 , they put money and time into all those sports. I dind´t like so much this year Rampage, maybe so much shovel or is just too much time there...
  • 7 3
@homerjm: No, Red Bull is absolutely NOT a media business company, you don't know what you're talking about. All their media business is just marketing. Their main F1 team's (RBR) 2016 expenses were about $250m. In return they got $160m from the Formula One Management in 2017. Where do you think the remaining $90m came from, merch sales? Big Grin
FYI, more than 6 billion cans of Red Bull (not sure if that includes their other drinks such as Red Bull Cola) have been sold in 2016. Considering it's not available in every single country, that's pretty much one can per every person who's able to buy it.
You're right that it tastes horrible and most people don't like it, but that's exactly what they've been so successful at - using their marketing activities to make people drink it despite the fact that it's disgusting and it's effect are comparable to a cup of strong coffee with six spoons of sugar. People drink it because it's cool, not because it tastes good, that's the whole point.

@otto99: I gave you concrete numbers, you gave me back nothing but meaningless bitching.
Show me some numbers to see how Red Bull makes money from their sports events. The TV stream is not pay per view, so they don't make anything from the people watching Rampage at home. I couldn't find the 2017 ticket prices but 2016 tickets were apparently $30. If you look at the photos, there wouldn't be more than a few of thousand people on that mountain so realistically, how much could they earn from the ticket sales? $100k max? One helicopter with a camera would probably cost you more than that if you need it for two days.

  • 46 4
He did not the hardest run, but he was clearly underscored and that´s why he got the People's Choice Award. That was a cool statement from the international voting bike community !
  • 16 0
I agree Bizet had an amazing (first) run but he was unfortunate his bigger feature collapsed so that he couldn't hit it. And the judging criteria state that line choice and difficulty is the main thing so they had to stick to that. His moves and fluidity was amazing indeed but then again if he'd had scored higher there would definitely have been others that this is not supposed to be a slopestyle comp and it is about the big hits and exposed lines.

Either way, I'm happy he won the People's Choice. He had a cool run and he seems to be having fun which is a great thing to see too.

But without it the top of his line was one of the more basic ones. I mean... Rheeders run was gnarlier and he did a corked 7 and only pulled 5th.
  • 5 0
OK some one has to take the title first place. In my oppinion they all won the competition by slaying it with crazy hard core lines and tricking off of huge jumps. Rampage keeps the Free ride movement alive!

Thx PB for the quality once again

 Yaaa SORGE
  • 13 6
 Zink should have won.
  • 2 0
would have been much cooler if brandon could have cleaned his first run so he could have pulled whatever bonkers he has in his hat out for number 2. or if zink or lacanduguy would have stuck that last jump it would have been nice to see those scores stack up. they were in it to win it
  • 2 0
Would be interesting to see the break down in the different scoring categories for each rider and then how they add up; it would show who the judges thought had the highest line difficulty, amplitude, tricks, etc. Probably would clear up a lot people's questions in the future.

Rampage is so gnarly! Margus' photo of Sorge's backflip and Nathan's photo of Zink riding down the guts are just amazing!
  • 4 0
Question is thou, would Zink have bumped down Sorges score if he would have landed that frontflip? Guess we'll never know but it was in my books a winning run!
  • 12 11
And what about Nell? His run was fairly good, but not THIS good. He almost cased his last jump, and got a 3rd place...wtf?? The hard underscoring started at the second runs. I was totally shocked like him, when i saw that Tommy G-s run was only enough for a sixth place.
  • 27 8
f*ck no man, you are WRONG, he did an amazing run, deserved 3rd place no doubt. That suicide no hander on the lillipad, you should rewatch his run. Ethan Nell deserved it. TMAC got robbed, bizet not really...maybe a bit underscored, but not podium run that´s for sure, no big features in his run. An semeneuk and Rheeder top 10...NOOOOO way man.
  • 10 2
@stefanfresh : whaaaat what what what How are rheeder and semenuk runs not top 10 worthy?
  • 3 1
@Aprilfisheye: maybe top ten, definetly not top 5 though.
  • 6 5
@stefanfresh: can we stop calling double drops lily pads? Rampage commentators starting the worst damn trends
  • 16 0
Suicide no hander into a huge double drop ? Flatspin in the ridge ? Actually had two double drops in his run !! Hell yes he deserved 3rd.
  • 6 2
@SnowshoeRider4Life: That’s what Ethan was calling it. The announcers just followed his lead.
  • 5 1
@stefanfresh: I think Kyle Strait could have been scored a little higher too. That unbelievable line to start, suicide no hander on a massive drop, backflip drop, rad superman and incredible tabletop, all with style throughout. For me, he and zink had the best combination of gnarly big mountain riding and tricks, so I'm not sure why he only got 8th. Not a winning run, but certainly top five. In terms of Bizet's run, I honestly don't think he got robbed. Look at the legendary judging panel and tell me that an average mountain biker knows better than they do. While tricks are super impressive, and his run was no doubt amazing, sometimes its the steep chutes and exposed technical drops that are actually more difficult than the crowd-pleasing tricks. They are only one small part of the judging equation and at an event like rampage sometimes it's not enough.
  • 2 3
@labiker9: About the panel. How can they ensure lack of bias? In almost any other sport, they would have judges of other nationalities and with no relationship with the competitors. How many of these guys know certain rampage riders personally fairly well or have hung out with them on/off the bike? There may well be patriotic /nationalistic tendencies among them too. How can that not be a factor?
  • 2 0
@BenPea: It certainly could be, at least sub consciously, but I don't think everyone in the judging booth were talking to each other saying "hey, that was an awesome run, but Bizet's French so let's score him really poorly." You have Vink from Belgium, Bender and Jameson from the states, so its not like they are all besties with Sorge and are from Nelson colluding to make him win. It maybe in a way was a small factor for a couple of judges but you can't say that he was robbed because he's French.
  • 3 1
@labiker9: No, I'm too objective to say Bizet was robbed per se (although I was a little surprised by his score - ok his top part wasn't the scariest...), but I'm just wondering if, overall, everything was done to ensure no bias (I'm not suggesting collusion between judges, just an unconscious tendency to prefer one guy over another). I'd forgotten Vink was in there, but he too has ties with a couple of the dudes in the comp. I guess it's such a minority sport that it's probably impossible to find anyone who hasn't established some sort of relationship with a rider at some point. Maybe there needs to be more judges to reduce the statistical bias. 10? 20? Every single commenter on PB/Vital/etc.? Oh, wait...

@SnowshoeRider4Life: Aaron Chase (live mc) & Cam McCaul (Webcast host) both referred to it as a Lilypad. Those dudes know a thing or two about freeriding! It may sound weird but I trust the source.
  • 1 0
@TimZim: the MC's were calling it that during practice. It wasn't just one person. all week long builders were saying it to.

How long till we can see some more POV footage? Kyle Strait's was excellent. I saw almost all the riders had cameras. I don't know if the riders own the footage this year and we should check their individual social media or if Red Bull will release it.

I dont know how many times Mr. Cam Zink has to make history in Rampage so that he gets the score he deserves.
They say they have the best jury for this event, but it dosen´t mean that we have to be agree with the shit they making every Rampage.

You know you have a legit biking event when Jesus Himself comes down to check it out..

Doode. The double flip, flatspin, chin scraper, schlong plunker, nose bonk, suicide fro chandler was the best. So great for watching. It’s the best. And suntour sponsorship is great too.

I hit a new drop today. Solid 15' out at 8' down. In my mind it was SO Rampage. In reality it would just be a little set up drop not worth mentioning. I suck and these guys are just insanely skilled with massive balls.
  • 2 1
Biggest let down of the entire thing was no Aggy. Think this was one of the best Rampages. No serious injuries, riders got clean runs with no wind messing it up. Props to all the athletes.
  • 2 0
What if Semenuk would've finished his 1st run without that crash, do you think it would have been enough for the win?
  • 3 3
 yes.

 maybe

A simple keystroke and a “Lyle” is born. I dig how fast we all pounce on the most silly things. Great people!!

Does anyone else what to see a natural DH event that is more or less the opposite of 'Hill Climbing'? So it would be more or less trials going down a cliff mixed will monster drops and shoots. All natural only practise tyre ruts allowed...?
  • 2 0
That would be awesome, but in this day and age Health and Safety would shut that down immediately, as if someone goes down bad everyone's blaming everyone.

Another rear picture of Semenuk`s smiling Big Grin

Rear pictures of people smiling are very rare, most people have the smile on the front Big Grin

I did the trophies this year for the event!! My name is Paul Klaine and my business is GNAR art! I've been trying to build them for the event for the last couple years and this year they gave me a chance! It was an absolute honor to do them for these insane athletes and for this rad event that we've all enjoyed for the last 12 years!!!! Thanks and cheers!!

@Staygnarlymyfriends: Beautiful piece of work mate, love it! Hope you get lots more commissions out of it Wink
  • 1 1
question-when the event is over, do they scrape the lines, or leave them for anyone to give it a go?
  • 2 1
they leave them there, that's why they were able to work on their lines from last year.
  • 1 1
Cant fest riders just go there now and jam so it can be virginfest? I would love to see what they can throw without the time pressure....
  • 1 1
@donpinpon29: I guess so, but I think the old saying "no dig, no ride" still holds. And riding someone else's line might be frown upon

one question from me: Darren got 81p for his second run, Sorgie for his winnig run was rewarded with 85p why?

Because none of them could put down runs comparable to the 20 that showed up.

Bizet got robbed, mayb im blind but i didnt see what was so special with ethans run to score him a 90
  • 5 0
His run was pretty sick. Watch it again. Dude's FLYING and going huge and clean everywhere. I think Zink's run was more than .33 better... but ethans run was sick. I'm biased... I woulda probably put Rheeder up there in and bumped him down to 4th with Semenuk in 5th. But all in all... judging was pretty good. EVERY rider out there absolutely killed it. What an amazing event. Pay them all!
