Press Release: Saalfelden Leogang

15 opportunities for gold, silver and bronze over the span of five days are included in the spectacular UCI 2020 Mountain Bike World Championships in Saalfelden Leogang. The organizers, Marco Pointner and Kornel Grundner, are now able to give us give exciting insights into how the event is organized, especially in difficult times: "We have seen ourselves increasingly responsible for making the World Championships possible for the riders, teams and sponsors, but also for the fans.”

Five days of pure action with 15 golden chances – Saalfelden Leogang, the host of the World Championships, gives the heavily adjusted mountain bike calendar a bit of security. Approximately eleven weeks before the start of the UCI 2020 Mountain Bike and Pump Track World Championships, which will take place 7-11 October, the title battles in Downhill, Cross-Country, E-Mountain Bike and Pump Track are taking shape. After consultation with the UCI, organiser Saalfelden Leogang can now officially announce the schedule for the quadruple World Championships.

The festivities will start in the usual manner with the Cross-Country Team Relay race on Wednesday, October 7. On the same day, two more medals will be awarded when the E-MTB stars, both women and men, take to the track.

On Thursday, the juniors will compete for gold, silver and bronze in Cross-Country. On Friday, the men's U23s will compete in Cross-Country. Afterwards men and women will duel each other on the Pump Track for the coveted rainbow jerseys. The Pump Track competition will signal the end of the third day of competition.

The World Championship weekend starts with the U23 Cross-Country women. In the Olympic discipline, the two Elite competitors will then give it their all on the demanding circuit. The final day of competition on Sunday offers four more decisions - all of them Downhill. First, the Junior women and then the Junior men will rocket down the Speedster, before the Women's and Men's Elite finish the quadruple World Championships.

Spectator situation still uncertain

Despite the uncertainty caused by the Corona pandemic and the resulting difficulty in planning, the organisers are trying to make the title races accessible to spectators. A decision on this has not yet been made. All current information is also available at: www.bikewm2020.com

"Prepared for all eventualities"

Organizers Marco Pointner and Kornel Grundner give exciting insights into the origins of the quadruple World Championships and the organizational challenges.

bigquotesThe UCI contacted us and asked if we saw an opportunity to integrate the Cross-Country and E-MTB competitions of the World Championships from Albstadt into our Downhill and Pumptrack World Championships. After we checked everything internally, it was clear to us that we could tackle a quadruple World Championships and that we wanted to take on the challenge.Marco Pointner, CEO Saalfelden Leogang Touristik

bigquotesThe short-term is not optimal and rather unusual. The tracks for the Cross- Country competitions have yet to be completed. But the biggest challenge is that we are prepared for all eventualities. We don’t know how the pandemic will develop.
Thus, we are currently working on four different "corona-ready" concepts. First of all for all athletes and teams, then for the entire media sector from journalists to TV teams, for all our own employees and helpers, as well as for spectators along the track and in designated corridors. Of course, we want spectators on the track, that's just part of it and what makes Leogang and mountain bike sport so special. But the top priority is that we can host the World Champs and not endanger anyone.

bigquotesOf course it's a great thing for us, for the Saalfelden Leogang region and for Epic Bikepark Leogang. We have invested a lot over many years, have developed as a reliable UCI partner and can once again underline our status as a top bike destination. But for us, it was also about the sport, the riders and everything around it. We have increasingly seen ourselves as responsible for making a World Championship possible for the riders, teams and sponsors, but also for the fans.Marco

Honest question in my mind is, will all the racers and teams be able to physically get there? As in, will their home country allow the travel out, and will the receiving country allow them all in?
  • 34 1
 Hard no.
  • 36 5
No sane country will be letting an American into their region with out a 2 week quarantine. Currently Australians can get approval to leave but need to quarantine for 2 weeks at the travelers cost upon return.

Honest question in my mind is, why did PB refer to Vali as "Vali" and "Valentina" on the two pictures' captions?
  • 4 2
@scott-townes: Valentina is her actual name, Vali is the nickname.
  • 6 0
Let me know how it works out, specially the e-bike pump track world champs.
  • 1 1
@scott-townes: And who spelled her last name correctly, PB or the custom frame painter...
  • 3 4
 @FloImSchnee: No shit, bud.
  • 1 1
 US won't.
  • 5 0
@themostnate: Both, German and Austrian names have two spellings, one with special characters and with standard letters.
  • 1 0
@scott-townes: presumably because the two photos have been uploaded by two separate people/accounts, who then spelt her name differently in the captions, which then gets automatically pulled through when they use the images in this article. Pretty simple. What was your point exactly?
  • 28 7
Quit wasting everyone's time and just call it. It's ok. Things got fucked up. Move on.
  • 26 4
Less than 10% chance this happens.
  • 10 2
 maybe for OUR countrymen...and women
  • 1 0
@Gibbsatron: sadly this is likely true. My son is supposed to race but I dont see the US being allowed to get there - healthy or not.

If the Grim Donut video gets released over this weekend it'll be too much for half of the PB community to handle and will simultaneously implode and explode at the same time. (It's also mine and my little boys birthday weekend, so the excitement levels will be rising steeper than the Donuts Seat tube angle.)
  • 6 2
Recognizing the historical significance of the Grim Donut, PinkBike has decided to carve it into stone. Videos are on the way out. The new way forward is bas-relief! Teams of artisans are currently carving the stele that is expected to be unveiled in the spring of 2026.

How can you have a world champion for ebikes? I’d that just the rider with the most powerful motor and biggest battery. It will be like f1 where you don’t stand a chance without the right machine
  • 16 2
You already don't stand a chance without the right machine.
  • 11 1
how does formula 1 have a championship? Motocross? Supercross? NASCAR?
  • 6 0
There are limits on the motors just like there are limits on just about everything else for XC and DH.
  • 5 0
I'm sure there are power limits just like every other motorsport.
  • 1 0
@hamncheez: Extensive regulations and rule sets.
  • 10 1
Oh my god. If this event takes place and is not cancelled, I will happily beat myself with the most uncomfortable object I can find. That....is how desperate I am to see some live DH racing.

Race your mates in the woods! Working for me so far...

Putting in my PTO right now!!!

Too bad its going to be renamed the UCI European Championships since there won't be anyone from outside the continent attending. They might even keep the Brits out (jk on that last part)

Someone is going to need to smuggle Gwin over there in a bike box.

Airline bag check: "WOW this box is heavy"
Intense rep:"...yeah it's an...e-bike"

A bit like the Baseball 'World Series' eh? Wink
  • 7 1
I don't understand why they're are trying to make international racing happen. National championships and local races should be enough for this "season". Intl races can start from scratch in 2021.
  • 4 2
 At this rate, maybe 2024.
  • 6 4
Yep it's this can't miss anything mindset that will end up with us having even more cancelations in the future.
  • 1 1
@TheLoamDeranger: Exactly. I cannot see any international racing in 2021 unless a vaccine suddenly appears
  • 4 3
@JNZ: Holidays are starting again in many places right now without quarantine and in most well managed countries cases and deaths will be minuscule to irrelevant in 6 months time.

Sure, you may still have measures in place so things won’t be completely ‘normal’ but at what point do you say that you are more likely to be hit by a stray dh bike when spectating than catch coronavirus there?

We can’t wait for absolutes like a 100% successful vaccine or complete eradication of the virus, we have to move forward accepting small risks exist, we all ride bikes in the woods after all.

Where this leaves countries who have f*cked it up like us in the UK and the even more poorly handled USA, who knows though.
  • 2 0
Why not ship the top 50 racers under strict contract to somewhere new, quarantine them for a month in tents and then spring the race upon us.

Where was that mountain in Canada that Sam Hill won on, on his Sunday beating Tyler I think it was, race it down there...

Too gnarly for 2020 and has a wee push in it.

I'm so starved for racing, even eMTB has my potential interest.
  • 5 0
 Well fucking done people.
  • 2 0
Yeah, that had to be very difficult to put together a plan like this
  • 4 0
If there was a World Champs for venues that host World Champs, these World Champs would for sure win the World Champs.
  • 1 0
With so many races cancelled , wouldn’t it be a good idea to schedule on the same week a real race , then a chainless race, a trail bike race , a 26 “ race ...
would be si cool if all the pro racers could take it a little seriously !
  • 1 0
Keen to see some racing but I think the uci should just run a by-year series like a friendly soccer match.
Having a world champs this year is just going to screw things up for next year and make last years point standings obsolete.
The winners from last year have missed out on a season of racing in the rainbow stripes and riders who can’t get to theses races will slip in their points standings.
  • 4 0
Hmmmm since maybe not a full NZ team..could I do E MTB, XCO, Pumptrack and DHI? the quad?
  • 5 1
 There's a UCI E-Bike World Championship race?!
  • 2 0
E-bike World Champs was held in 2019 at Mt St Anne.

 @casey79:

Well that’s pretty lame.

I really have nothing against ebikes, and most people I see on them are going at normal mtb speeds.

Racing then in a cycling event seems like it could make superior electromechanical technology that which determines the winner. Simply a superior battery technology (not that that’s simple) could mean winning or losing.
  • 3 0
@hllclmbr: You should have seen the E-MTB races when FIM raced bikes on MX tracks! Even worse!
  • 3 1
@hllclmbr: just like the The rest of mtb. A superior suspension design wins races so the manufactures constantly improve suspension design. Racing is and always has been R&D for the next step. If we all liked going slow we would still be on hardtails with rim brakes and bar ends. I’m going out on a limb here but I’d wager you’ve never even seen a high quality e-MTB in person never mind ridden one. If you had you’d change yiur mind. They are a ton of fun and just as much of a workout as any other bike, you just get the climb done a bit faster so you can get more descents in a day. If I had the cash laying around I’d absolutely have one in my garage. spend 5+ hours on the road, round trip, to the closest lift access or spend half an hour round trip to ride the local spots and do as many laps? No brainer.
  • 1 0
 And no 4x???!!!
  • 1 1
@Larkey1 Novark Djockovich ? Never heard of him.
Novak Djokovic different story. It is called safety protocols which I am sure the responsible authorities are taking very seriously. Especially with such a high profile event. Maybe if people followed direction and took their personal role seriously we wouldn't have all the sensationalism and dying. What a novel idea in 2020, oersonal responsibility towards others!

Good on Leogang and the UCI (bastards that they can be) for working on this!
  • 1 1
Spelled a word wrong myself so I guess I am a moron too. ????‍♂️

But this stuff really isnt that hard. It involves common sense, following direction and caring for our fellowman.
If more people did that we wouldn't be putting the world on hold thru this crisis.
  • 1 2
Test-fly-quarantine-race. Whats the problem. As long as warner is shouting in the mike i'll be shouting at the telly. He must be as hungry for racing as the rest of us. If we're lucky we might even get the old-timey-champery-2011-warner back for just a race.

Why do people bitch? This is fing rad no matter how you slice it. Leogang might not have the best tracks, etc., but they obviously get it and love the support. You are #1 in my eyes this year!!!
  • 6 1
Because people are dying. Look at that tenis tournament Novark Djockovic organised. Mass spread of the virus. Let's just stay local in 2020 and swing back into it next year

As much as I would love to see it happen I dont put my hope too high.

  • 5 0
 @Imabigboy82: 20% is better than 0%....
  • 4 0
@Imabigboy82: yeah, cutting 100% of the track like we get with EWS is soo much better
  • 4 0
@Imabigboy82: Better than paying for a cycling pass membership to watch on NBC sports with the same coverage
  • 3 1
Americans can't currently travel to Europe. Bummed.
  • 1 3
Not sure why they continue to try and cram multiple events into one venue. Just do top 20-30 DH teams, limit the number of support staff, forget spectators, juniors, XC, pump, E (wtf) and pull it off. Then do the same thing for XC at a separate event.
  • 2 0
 10/10 for optimism I guess...

"oe" is sometimes used in place of "ö". I'm not sure of the exact semantics but it is fairly common to do so
  • 1 0
@gmcc: probably comes from the early days of Internet when unicode did not exist and browsers had difficulties with the various codepages... ß would also be replaced with "ss"
  • 1 0
