127 Giant eBikes Stolen from Container in England

A container has been broken into and 127 Giant ebikes have been stolen from a lorry near London, England.

The robbery happened this morning on the A12 road between Lowestoft and London, Bike Biz reports. Giant said thieves cut through the container locks and offloaded the full load onto another vehicle, leaving the truck empty.

The container was full of 2022 models, including:

Reign E+ 0 MX Pro in Phantom green & Black – size large
Reign E+ 2 MX Pro in Black Diamond & Black – size extra large
FastRoad E+ EX Pro in Black – size large
Talon E+ 29er Sport in Graphite – size large and extra-large
Talon E+ Sport in Graphite – size large

Ian Beasant, Managing Director from Giant UK, said: “We ask for our retailers and the cycling community to be wary of these goods circulating in the market”. Retailers and consumers impacted by this break in will be contacted directly by the brand shortly.

It seems that organised crime is on the rise in the cycling world as the Giant robbery follows in the footstep of a similar crime in Germany. In that incident, a truck driver was gassed and parts for the production of ten thousand bicycles were stolen in an organized robbery in January. The parts were stolen from the largest Czech bicycle producer, Bike Fun International, that produces full bikes under the Rock Machine and Superior names and components through ONE Bikeparts. BFI says that the thieves stole important Shimano components and as a result, customers will have to wait almost a year longer for some of its models in future.

Police are investigating the incident and anyone with information is asked to please contact the Giant team on 0800 015 9110, or email sales@giant-bicycles.co.uk

I'm sure the thieves have busy lives and high powered jobs and family commitments that make stealing a lot of regular bikes difficult. Luckily these were ebikes so they could steal 2-3 times as many in the same amount of time.

127 Giant ebikes stolen....how hard could they be to find?

I mean how circuses are there in the world for these bikes to be ridden by extra large humans?

@stovechunin: @stovechunin: "Bike thieves! How can you Liv with yourselves?!"

They have a far higher level of dishonesty and lower level of guilt,
dont be naive into thinking they are on your level, far from it.

They live with themselves just fine and with a big smile, whilst laughing at
what they have got away with, you see if they get caught for this, high
chance they will get away with it.

It's about time bike theft gets a serious look from the industry. $20k bikes with computers and Bluetooth capabilities sold with zero theft or electronic lockout protection is ridiculous. No consideration for installing GPS trackers or anti-theft devices on any bikes... unless they happen to have on-board storage. Serial numbers should be uploaded when connected to wifi, E-bikes should connect to user's phones and be password, fingerprint or FaceID protected. This is all readily available technology and fairly inexpensive.
  • 10 0
Vanmoof makes commuter ebikes and they have this exact thing you are talking about, I don’t understand why all bike manufacturers don’t offer this. If they want to be Dicks about it they can even make you pay yearly for asset tracking. Just seems like a logical solution. Especially with the amount of bikes being stolen before they get to the bike shops. Bike manufacturers should want this technology to save themselves some cash,
  • 17 3
@Bm1117: I can tell you why they don't. Bike manufacturers get to sell you a new bike when insurance pays out your stolen one. They don't care about the hassle, stress or potential lack of supply you may experience. You bought one.... it got stolen... you'll buy another.
  • 4 0
@LucaP: so now what is giant gonna do now that they have to eat 127 ebikes? These bikes were stolen from Giant and now they have to replace the inventory. Any company losing about a million in inventory is going to feel it.

Bike riders buy bikes anyways. If it doesn’t get stolen then they sell them after a few years and buy new ones.
  • 5 0
Rocky Mountain’s ebikes have a tracker in them, and Specialized’s new ebikes have a function where you can kill the motor remotely if it’s stolen, so it is getting better
  • 2 0
@LucaP: Sounds like business opportunity to me.

Crazy that you get a title with a dirt bike which makes selling a stolen one a little tougher, but a ebike that costs more doesn't have any kind of paper work attached.
  • 2 0
Because its totally pointless. GPS trackers are next to the most useless items you can buy. You can buy jammers on ebay and Amazon and guess what? Thats what villains do! Thats how motorbikes, quads, plant, etc leaves its owner and finds its way into a container.
Also, the complete bike is low value, its the parts.
  • 2 2
 @Dogl0rd: at it again...
  • 3 0
It doesn't work in the motor industry. At all. How is the bike industry going to manage to do what no one else has. Nowadays theft prevention is all about ensuring you are eligible to claim insurance.
  • 2 1
I could imagine that coming up with good and owner convenient bike tracking device is something that guys and gals at @oneupcomponents would be really good at.
  • 3 2
@Jonesey23: You need more than few connected braincells to steal a car. Bicycles? 99% of thieves are less fortunate in terms of skill and intelligence. This is why they are stealing bikes. Sure a big heist like this is surely a work of someone with more computing power but vast majority of bike thefts are done by morons.
  • 1 1
@Bm1117: the insurance will be for the market retail value of the bikes. giant will still profit from them regardless.
  • 2 0
@Afterschoolsports: depends on their policy. They might only get their cost.

Henry Quinney is likely to blame, he hates ebikes and has ties to the UK. My guess is the bikes are all at the bottom of English Channel as we speak. Case closed.

127 rude bois suddenly riding expensive eMTBs in one of the flattest parts of the UK... don't think the police will have to work too hard to figure this one out.
  • 60 5
If they can be arsed to even try, which is unlikely.

"You've got the wrong number mate, this is the police..."
"I called the police, yes."
"You want to call your insurance company, not us. We haven't got the resource to catch actual criminals. All our manpower is assigned to catching people driving 3mph over the speed limit, and making house calls to people who may or may not have written something offensive on Twatter."

@jaame: people speeding and driving dangerously are a threat to me and and my family. Even more so when riding and commuting.
Theft of some ebikes directly from a massive company affects me in no way.
Id much rather the Police put resources into stopping nobhead drivers.
  • 5 5
@pen9-wy: see this is 100% wrong. This actually affects you more than you think, with companies having tons of inventory and no way of getting it to you these are all parts that took up shipping space one way or another. Yea they might be shite parts but it’s the container space that’s so bloody hard to get rn. And at the rate that bike theft is going man it probably has affected you some way and you don’t even know.
  • 30 2
@pen9-wy: Exactly. The police should only work on crimes that directly affect you personally. I’m sure they’ll perk up when someone steals your bike.
  • 3 4
@pen9-wy: assuming you ride bikes because your on a bike forum but the fact you don’t care bikes got stolen makes me think you’re just a selfish piece of shite, tell ur kids to look both way before they cross the roads buds it’s common sense problem solved. police volunteers can catch people ppl speeding you tool this is actual police work

These type of criminals aren't that dumb. They're not gonna throw that much money away. These will sell for at most a grand under msrp. And they'll sell quickly at that. The meth head in withdraw is the only guy selling stolen bikes for pennies on the dollar. They also know that way under pricing then is a red flag for getting busted. Not all douchebags are idiots unfortunately.

This is what happens when bikes costs as much as a honda civic.
  • 7 0
For how often this happens it sounds like theres insurance fraud going on
  • 5 0
Or is it an excuse by manufacturers to explain to consumers why they don’t have the bikes they ordered three months ago? “See, what had happened was…”

I kid, but damn, this seems like an epidemic.
  • 6 1
hum...bike industry doesn't really need to fraud with the current boom it lives.
  • 4 0
Certainly someone with inside knowledge of the shipment was in on it, but i highly doubt that Giant, one of the three biggest bike brands in the world, is after some pocket change from insurance.
  • 5 0

  • 1 0

  • 1 0
@psyfi: In the olden days when one had to purchase a paper version of MBUK or Dirt once a month, there was far less opportunity for this kind of article. I still believe it's happening more, but stuff also gets reported more.
  • 4 0
How big were they? Seems like giant bikes would be hard to hide.
  • 1 0
Has to be an inside job doesn't it? How do you know which container to hit and even if it was by some miracle a chance haul can't see them miraculously have room for 127 e bikes in the get away vehicle
  • 4 0
If they catch the thieves, they'll have to charge them and the bikes.

Ok something is up here. The cycling industry is seeing unprecedented theft and the heists are getting more and more elaborate. I'm not saying these companies are in on it but holy shit it's happening so often I really don't think the companies care. They get the insurance pay back on their goods, and they get to charge more because of a scarcity of goods. there's some bobby axlerod shit going on with some of these companies lemmetellya
