I have a 1985 Schwinn High Sierra that I use as a commuter bike to get around town. It has been an awesome bike but the rear axel/hub just broke. I don't know much about vintage bike parts or if there is any place to even find parts for these old bikes. Im guessing I need a new hub but not sure what spec I need. Is my best bet to find an old bike from the same era and harvest it for parts? Is anyone making new products that will work with this bike? looking to keep this as cheap as possible.

Most likely it's going to be a 130mm hub width. If it just needs a spare part you might be able to find the same old hub on ebay and use it for parts

I see them on Craigslist and Marketplace ads as wheelsets off and on. The important thing is it is 130mm, standard on many bikes up to 1998.
