Round five of the Shimano Cascadia Dirt Cup presented by Cannondale headed to Tiger Mountain, Issaquah, for a day of enthusiastic racing and the series finals. Tiger Mountain is where the CDC had its first race, so it's a bit like coming home when the series races here. As an added bonus, this ended up being the first full-pull race on the Department of Natural Resource's freshly completed downhill trail Predator.

Predator is Tiger Mountain's first downhill trail (one-way bike traffic only) and features a raucous blend of everything. Slippery roots and rocks play leap-frog with deep berms and high-speed tabletops. All of which add a welcome flavor of gnar to one of the area's most popular riding destinations. The DNR hired Evergreen Mountain Alliance to build the trail and more than 5,000 hours of volunteer time went into its completion under the tutelage of Bryan Connolly, EMBA's lead trail builder. The finished product is an aggressive and challenging trail that throws riders around as they battle their way downhill.

With Predator opening to the public one week before the race, Series Director Trey Wilson decided that the Sport and Junior categories would only race Predator's less technical bottom section. This controversial decision was made because of the short amount of available practice time, overall technical difficulty of the trail, and the wide range of abilities in those categories. The call wasn't universally well received, but what's racing without some dissenters? Grumbling aside, the weekend was stacking up to be a great event complete with a waiting list of hopeful participants.

Kicking rocks is bad. After breaking his toe during the week, Luke Strobel was just looking to hold down a respectable time and take the overalls (Pro Men).

Racer's were divided up into groups 'A' and 'B' with the former consisting of Sport and Junior categories. Group A completed the race stages one, two, three, four, and an abbreviated five. Pros and Experts formed up Group B and ran the courses five, one, two, three, four. Which allowed them to get the gnar out of the way at the start - racer's could also switch out a full face helmet and any armor at the staging area after the run down Predator if they chose. Stages one and five rewarded high-speed aggressive riding while stages two, three, and four favored energy conservation or the ability to maintain momentum. In total the course involved 22 to 25 miles and 3,500 to 4,500 ft of climbing depending on one's group.

Thankfully the over precipitation that has plagued the series decided to lay off for the finals, and small patches of mist were the closest mother nature came to raining on the race. This boon of favorable weather did not go unnoticed by the riders who were better able to focus on racing instead of merely surviving the elements.

Coming into the finals Luke Strobel had a good lead in Pro Men, but a broken toe had him content with putting in a respectable time to hold down the overalls. Scott Kemp was in second, followed by Lars Sternberg, Charlie Sponsel, and Neal Strobel who had a three way split for third. Emily Sabelhaus was unchallenged in the Pro Women category and Jason Eiswald had a lead over Jimmy Cloherty and Layton Meyers for Junior Men. The Cascadia Dirt Cup requires that riders compete in three races before they are in the running for the overalls. Final scores are tallied from points from a rider's best four races.

RACE RESULTS

Aaron Bradford put in the fastest time of the day, trailed a few second by Luke Strobel - who did put in a respectable enough time to clinch the overalls. Logan Wetzel came in third, followed by Neal Strobel and Charlie Sponsel. Emily Sabelhaus placed fourth behind Andi Zolton, Bekah Rottenberg, and Leana Gerrard. Karen O'Connel had her best Pro Women finish of the season, taking fifth. Scott Funston topped the podium for Junior Men ahead of Jimmy Cloherty, Jason Eiswald, Bryce Kans, and Brayden Buchanan. Eiswald managed to retain just enough lead in the points to finish first in the overalls.

While points, ranks, and times will always be the meter by which we race, there's more to the story of mountain bike racing. The Cascadia Dirt Cup continues to hit that target by blending heartfelt competition with an even stronger sense camaraderie amongst riders. They do that through a passion for everything mountain biking, an earnest group of volunteers, generous sponsors, and a wealth of fantastic Pacific Northwest locations.

The wheel's don't stop turning for the CDC, expect to hear the schedule for next year in October or November. Hope to see you next year.

Evergreen rocks! Predator is the best example of what a true trail advocacy organization can do when they have the will and the skill. I'm glad I was able to put some time in on building it this summer but my contribution pales in comparison to some of ya. Now to find out if I can survive riding it all winter Smile

Roger that! I might have put in ten hours of work on Predator this summer, but multiply my 500 shovelfuls of dirt by how many hundreds of volunteers Evergreen can muster, and the potential for trail building is huge. The trail is sweet, definitely separates the men/women from the boys/girls.

Hiya Locals, what is the weather like at Tiger Mountain around New Years time? Is it high enough that it gets snow or is is close enough to the bay that it stays warmish? Thanks! Hoping it could be a great vacation end of this year.
  • 2 0
The Tiger Summit is high enough that there's snow. It's just above 3000', IIRC. I know that when I lived out there, I encountered snow heading up to the summit trail a couple of times. That's the weird part about Seattle and the surrounding area; there's this (usually) 1500' cutoff for the snow; sometimes it drops lower, but that's typically the cutoff elevation. There were only 2 or 3 times when I lived at 650' or lower when we had significant snow that I can remember, and that's over a 10 year period of living out there.
  • 1 0
Forecasts are calling for another warm fall and winter so there may not be snow but Tiger gets significantly more rainfall than surrounding areas and used to be closed seasonally. They are trying to keep at least some of the trails open year round but you may be shut out from the higher stuff on the mountain. I don't know if I'd plan a trip around Tiger in December/January.

Duthie and Tokul tend to fare a bit better in winter...
  • 1 0
@DrPete agree and the climbing penalty at Tokul, while still present, isn't as formidable as Tiger. Cat 1's had a crazy amount of climbing to do!
  • 1 0
Thanks for the feedback guys! We may still go bc I have a friend in Seattle (free lodging) and its a reasonable drive from Oakland (3 or 4 tanks of gas tops). I guess it will depend on how El Nino winter has been up to that point.

Awesome race! The organization, the trails and the weather could not have been better. Thanks for a great experience for my first Enduro race on US soil. See you at a few more next year!

Here in the CO front range, we could really use some help convincing local park managers to allow us to build mtb trails like those at Tiger Mountain and Duthie. Seriously, you guys don't know how good you've got it with the ability to build one-way dh mtb trails, especially technical ones like Predator and progressive ones like Duthie hill. I mean gap jumps, seriously? We can't even build a 5 foot table top in the Front Range.

I think the key might be as easy as figuring out how to change management of our local mtb trail organizations. Pretty sure that even if the parks said "build whatever you want" our local trail orgs wouldn't have a freaking clue what to do. Please come down here and help us!
  • 1 0
Even just the same trails we have now, but one-way would be such a huge improvement.
  • 10 0
It's all due to the incredible Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, constant lobbying, grant writing, and building.
  • 5 0
Maybe CO has the opposite problem - too many people concerned about how to use land for recreation, with competing interests. One of the Evergreen guys who maintains trails near my house said they kept showing up to the county meetings in force, with dozens of volunteers ready to work, thus visually showing who the people who cared most about access really were. They literally outnumbered the "horse people" and "fish people" so the county let them start working on trails. However CO might have equal representation between bikers and other groups.
  • 2 0
I finally got around to riding this trail over the weekend, and I have to say I am absolutely blown away by this trail. To have an officially sanctioned trail as technical as Predator on public land is an incredible accomplishment, but to execute it as well as they did is a feat unto itself - this is one of the most fun trails I've ridden anywhere. There are so many opportunities to create flow or find a better line. If you make a mistake, within a couple turns you can get back into the rhythm. Not feeling it? still going to have a blast without gapping things.

Hats off to Evergreen for a job well done.

CDC, you guys made the right decision with the course setup despite the grumbling ahead of time. The mountain can really dish out a heaping helping of hurt. At least this way everyone was able to experience the new trail. Now, can we get earlier start times next year? It felt like brunch with Sponsel going out at 11.

Thanks!!! And yes, earlier start times indeed.

Thanks for putting on another stellar race CDC! Also, thanks Eric and Chris for taking such great photos! Predator is by far one of the most fun trails I've ridden on a trail bike. Lots of variety and challenges but not too difficult for mere mortals like myself.

Evergreen is killing it with tiger. The new trail is absolutly amazing. Good work dudes! Im sure this race was a blast. Wish i could've raced it.

This race capped off my first season of enduro and I'm totally hooked. Gives me motivation to train hard and come back faster next season. Smile Congrats to Trey and the rest of the CDC team on an amazing series.

How do people ride without glasses or eye protection of some sort? Blows me away seems like whenever I ride without any within 15 minutes there are 4 bugs in my eye.
  • 2 0
 Fenders. And squinting.
  • 1 0
It's so easy to damage your eyes permanently, people use cheap crappy eye wear that distorts their vision and think all lenses are like that, just invest the money in a pair of Oakley ANSI z87.1 glasses. Cheap Smith and Spy stuff usually doesn't have the z87.1 cert.
  • 1 0
When its really wet and muddy, lenses get covered too quickly to keep clear vision, even with tearoffs. Without goggles or glasses, at least you can squint or blink. Works really well when paired with a fender. I ride with eye protection in all other conditions, the moving air makes me tear up without them.
  • 1 0
I second this... Last summer I took a very minor spill but my bike kept tumbling through the air and I took a saddle to the face after I landed. The hit was hard enough to fracture my eye socket (orbital blowout fracture), requiring surgery. My surgeon told me that without eye protection the risk of a ruptured eyeball from that injury is around 40%. If it's wet and sloppy enough that I need to take my eye protection off I usually just bag the ride.
  • 1 0
I literally can't ride with eye wear. It sucks and is scary sometimes but I manage to be pretty fast and have just learned to dodge shit with my face

OMG. My home trails. I recognize all those folks on the podium, and now I don't feel so bad getting passed like I was standing still. Great photos AND writeup.
