bigquotesWorking with Ricci has been real smooth. So many things just didn't need to be said when we were working together, he knew exactly what type of angles would work. See...now that's cool. I could just do my thing and he would get down there in the nitty gritty and get the shot. Plus, we both knew we weren't making a piece that said anything other than...'bikes are cool' and 'let's see Stacy get rowdy'. It's good to be on the same page. - Stacy Kohut

bigquotesEver since moving to Whistler, I have always been really interested in what Stacy is doing. As a kid growing up, I was glued to the screen watching his New World Disorder segments. I introduced myself this summer and proposed the project, and we began working on it a couple months later. Working with Stacy has redefined what I imagined to be possible on a four wheel bike and I was constantly impressed by the level of control and style he brought to every feature. I think the way Stacy rides is a direct reflection of his personality and I hope that this piece will convey that to anyone watching. - Chris Ricci

I want to see a bike check on this thing. would be interesting to see how it works and who makes it
  • 47 0
A PB review? I'd love to see RC's first ride on one of these.

Did you notice the 4-wheel independent braking - he's got 2 levers on each side!
  • 4 0
I wonder if he uses them separately? If not, I'd try to develop a lever where you can drop two lines off of it to each wheel.. just like the front wheel of a motorcycle. you can do two lines right off the banjo on the lever, or you can go to one caliper and then branch off to the other... would clear up some space on the bars. But that thing looks intense, I'm sure it was engineered that way for a reason.
  • 4 0
There's a company that produces them (I can't find it) but I believe they're sold as "4 wheeled mountain bikes". Anyone else miss the joint segments of Stacy with Trevair? Ah so good to see at least one of them ripping again.

We got one of Stacy's rigs for my mate. Its sick as hell and amazing what it can handle. Took it for a go down the local track we made for him... Way way harder than you would think to use... Taking it easy I rolled it first corner, the suspension just topples you over if you get it wrong. Off camber stuff is full commitment. Actually everything was like that... Been cool to do the wrenching on it and learn how to set it up suspension and tire pressure wise. Crucial when yer mate relies on it 100% to not kill him..
Hardest part is finding tracks as the front end is just under a 1m wide and its essentially chainless. A-line in Whistler was perfect for it but single track is usually a no go...
  • 6 0
@poundsand you'd need a much larger master cylinder in the lever to run 2 calipers, otherwise the lever would have a ton of throw and almost touch the bar.
  • 5 0
The brakes are pretty simple. its 4 complete brakes that have the levers for each end bolted together with a couple plates. The brake lines have a mixing chamber for the front and back ends that keep it all balanced. Works just like normal brakes, you squeeze one side for front other for back. Oh and running just one lever wouldn't pump enough fluid for 2 calipers.
  • 2 0
He has better form then I do
  • 2 1
I run two levers on one side of the bike. Allows me to modulate the brakes, and simpler than having to deal with any custom parts or extra joints. Toby's Cycle Works in Vancouver does a lot of this work and I have seen a few of these in his shop. They build my arms.
  • 2 0
Thats awesome, i didnt even know this technology was out there for bikes until i saw this vid.
  • 18 0
 a bike check huh?
hmmmmm.

nice idea.

the hayes brakes and levers for the bikes were always customized at thefixinc. in whistler.
2 levers and 2 ressies mix into one ,then push 4 pistons.
equal pressure left and right.
simple solution to a complex problem.

stoked to see you into it!

 nice one, stacy!

a few detail shots from the bike during a short interview in Whistler - german only, sorry: www.mtb-news.de/news/2014/08/13/wahnsinn-auf-4-raedern-fourwheeler-stacy-kohut-ueber-line-spruenge-und-rallye-feeling
  • 1 0
thanks for the article, used google translate and it worked fairly well
  • 2 0
Interesting idea having the two lines run through a mixer before splitting out again. Just had a thought....I dont really know how much fluid a moto brake lever pushes compared to a mtb one, but I'm willing to bet its a fair amount more, judging by the size of the calipers. Have you ever tried mounting a moto lever and running both calipers off of one master piston?
  • 2 0
 Hope Technology do a system.

They've made bespoke systems for people before that have had disabilities That I've seen around.

heres a link to something for the road/CX market that you could easily use on a quad cycle.

4 is better than 2. Come on ladies, one at a time please. Smile
  • 29 4
neg props, apparently no one sees the Eddie Masters Fat Bike video reference. It was funny in my mind.
  • 3 2
For the record, I got it and thought it was hilarious!
  • 48 1
 Yah Stacey! Well deserved.

Stacey has been ripping hard since way before his accident - he just had to find new ways down the mountain after. This dude was un-catchable on his sit-ski in the early 90's even by a hardcore group of able-bodied riders he rode with. Sit-ski in the halfpipe in the early 90's, dropping into a vert ramp in his wheelchair, ripping A-line in the 4-wheeler....hard to even comprehend.

I never write comments in here but this is a guy who handled (and handles) adversity like we all hope we could if we had to. Huge respect for this man...
  • 4 0
Yeah I remember watching his part is NWD 3 (?). He sent then and still sends it now! Mans a legend!
  • 18 0
thank you kindly for the very nice words.

as far as the adversity is concerned............
i'm just stoked/lucky i had parents that raised me to try.

daddy was a drag racer, momma was a bleach blonde.
  • 3 0
Back in 94 I met Stacy in Lake Louise, would have to load him and his ski bob on the ol Friendly Giant. he would rip the craziest lines down the mountain while on the heals of Greg Todds and Scott Newsome, and drop some big drops.
Oh....and fast as sh@t!
  • 36 2
Two eight inches in the rear.. No homo.
  • 8 0
6 and a quarter actually. lol. linear too! same up front.
  • 1 3
Aha, it was a reference to the " I'm Faster Than You" video.
  • 18 0
That's the raddest thing I've seen all week. Stacy, you rule !!!
  • 9 0
Well, that was the best video I've seen today. And not in a "that was rad cos he's riding a quad" kinda way. It was just rad full stop.
  • 7 0
thank you. we just wanted to stoke people out for dh. really happy to hear you liked it.
  • 1 1
Stacy have you thought about investing in a little electric motor of some sort to troll around on?
  • 4 0
 why would i avoid hardwork?
why would i avoid what makes me excel?

i have an engine, its called a heart.

2 wheels or 4 wheels, the minute you put ANY type of engine on it, it stops being a bike and becomes an atv or motorcycle.

if i had an electric engine on my bike i would never be allowed to ride bike parks again.
  • 4 0
don't mean to sound harsh, but it is the truth. to be very honest, never once in 16 years of riding the fourwheeler have i ever wanted a motor. besides, if i did, i could go to any motorcycle store and buy an atv. 2 separate, and different sports. i like one, but not the other.
  • 5 0
I would like to see Pinkbike do an interview with Stacy. It would be interesting to hear his story as well as answers to questions like what is falling like in that and what the learning curve was like. Good job on the video Chris!
  • 5 0
Not sure which is more badass. The man or his machine. Plenty of badass to spread around in that edit, so all is good. Definitely want to see more about the machine on PB though.
  • 2 0
This is excellent! With today's technologies the possibilities are endless..I would love to see crowds of disabled people ripping it up on tracks regularly like this, infact is love a go myself I just hope these are on sale also the big production names need to get involved Smile

Pukka stuff
  • 5 0
this is AWESOME !!! but woaw this wheels have to be soooo resistant they're constantly oscillating
  • 9 0
wheels are phil woods laced to sun with dt spokes. 3 cross, mirror images, and they do 'tighten' under braking. built to perfection and harmonically tuned by james at thefixinc. i go thru 4 sets a year, that 16 total wheel builds. glad you liked the footage!
  • 1 3
 Harmonically tuned... Hahaha
  • 4 0
Spokes "tighten" under braking. You are the only other person I have heard refer to it like that. Respect level just went up a notch...
  • 1 5
flag xCri (Mar 5, 2015 at 9:34) (Below Threshold)
yeah the guy who told him he harmonically tunes his wheels told him that...
  • 2 0
Harmonically tuned is good. Its like using a tension gauge but quicker.
  • 1 1
It's what people that are missing the actual points of building strong wheels tell people so those people are dazzled by what they know. Spokes always tighten under braking. It's which ones that tighten that matters.
  • 2 0
Leading spokes always tighten under braking. If they are on the outside of the hub flanges, this increases spoke triangulation, bracing the wheel against the increased loads it is likely to undergo while braking. If the leading spokes are on the inside of the flanges, spoke triangulation is reduced, as is the strength of the wheel exactly when it needs it the most.

If the leading spokes are inside on one flange and outside on the other, your wheelbuilder is an idiot. Common practice is to do exactly this on rear wheels, because of one side dealing with drive forces and the other dealing with braking forces. This is stupid. Unless you weigh about 7000 lbs your hubshell is unlikely to be twisting under braking, let alone drive forces. The other argument for doing this is that if your chain derails into your spokes, this way causes less damage. As far as I am concerned this is the equivalent of walking round in a nappy just in case you piss yourself. It shouldnt be happening in the first place, and if it is, you have bigger problems.

To be honest the differences are miniscule. But one way of building is better than the other two and has no downsides, so why not?
  • 1 2
Thanks for the lesson. You probably like telling people you harmonically tune their wheels too.
  • 3 0
Yup, Equal spoke tensions are a good thing after all. I do check em with a tension gauge after to make sure, but I have never come across a situation where spokes at the same tension produce different notes unless someone has supplied me with shit spokes. Any other points you wanna be a little bitch about?
  • 1 2
oh you just seem like you want it. You're obviously a bike tech God. Some bodies gotta be the Devils advocate. It's obviously not going to be you.
  • 2 0
Playing devils advocate would imply that you have given reasoned and difficult to refute arguments about why there are better ways to build wheels. However what you have actually done is simply say "Harmonically tuned... Hahaha" Thats not a reasoned and difficult to refute argument. Well, not unless you are still in kindergarden.
  • 1 1
Your previous response before editing was far better.
  • 2 0
Probably, but I cant very well accuse you of of making claims without backing them up, then just call you a bitch without backing it up myself.
  • 1 0
Anyway, good talk. I'm off to catch a plane now. Cya later.
  • 2 2
Like I said. You're obviously a bike tech God. So there's no point in even trying to argue sensibly with you. Because you clearly own the patent on sense. I just like to get it done and make sure it stays done while not wasting the whole day doing it. If I was building bicycle wheels to go in the fucking Louvre maybe I'd do some harmonic tuning. But we're just riding them over jagged rocks so in all likeliness you're harmonic tuning is completely undone after a lap or two. And the rim was never made well enough in the first place to even matter. And if you haven't spent half the afternoon stretching your spokes in like a scientist it matters again, even less.
  • 5 0
Thanks for the entertainment gentlemen. This is why I love reading the pinkbike comments section.
  • 4 0
fkna bud!!! I knew it'd be good but exceeded allll expectations. start with Hunter S and end with Iggy seems about right. wicked. wish it was longer
  • 3 0
stoked. i was hoping you'd approve. means alot coming from you sean. chris ricci nailed it. peace
  • 1 0
I had the opportunity too see you ride Stacy in the two summer seasons previous that I lived in whistler, I am stoked Chris and you got together and made an edit. You absolutely rip bud!! Bloody nice work Chris keep up the good work!!
  • 2 0
Could easily handle another 10-15 minutes of this. I've followed Stacy down a trail or two at Whistler. He puts 120% into riding the sh1t out of whatever run he happens to be on. Following him and watching him do his thing made me ride harder and get more out of the trail. Thanks for that SK.
  • 2 0
Awesome Stracy! I like your authentic power and ego - it's emanating in this vid! That video where you jump in skatepark and talk about being enabled is burned into my mind for ever! "I hate posers"! haahhaha Big Grin It was also great to hear you on the interview with Ryan Leech. All the best man!
  • 1 0
thanks waki, the vid was fun to do because chris ricci stuck to his guns and made a nice edit that comes from the heart.

during our first visit to Whistler, we instantly recognized Stacy and dropped in behind him. He smoked us. The man shreds.
  • 4 1
Inspirational, next time I hear someone say there not riding because they have a cold or some other lame excuse I'll show them this.... Then slap them
  • 3 0
I know what we all think of electric motors in the cycling world, but if anyone deserves to use one it's him. (Not that he seems to need one...)
  • 3 0
Sick Stacy. Stokes me out to go faster and harder. You're straight flying son. Speed and aggression are sick. Great vid. Great riding.
  • 4 0
thanks man for the cool comment. thank you EVERYBODY, for all the comments. the whole point of the vid was to just show a boy and his bike going as fast as he could , as aggressively as he could. real glad it came thru.
  • 2 0
Stacy, great piece buddy. You are the man and certainly one of the highlights of Crankworx is seeing and talking to you there. Just need a lap of A Line with you and I'm made. All the very best. Si..
  • 1 0
This guy is my Hero. Every time I see him out ripping it, I yell out " You Da Man". or "your my hero"!
I am thankful every day for what I have and the good health to ride. I get so many chills down my spine

  • 4 0
Stacy is the man, that's amazing!
  • 3 0
This is the perfect example of what a man and his willingness can do .. Stacy you rule .. !!!!!
  • 3 0
How does he get speed? Obviously gravity, but is the something else driving the cart?
  • 11 0
 Balls. Really big balls.
  • 6 0
and a large dose of desire. lol. peace
  • 2 0
How does he sit down with balls that big!
  • 2 0
Always saw him ripping around the park and though heck he must go through a wack of wheel bearings, now I know he does for sure.
  • 4 0
for sure!!!!!!!!!! i go thru alot of wheel bearings. the inside bearing in the rear take a beating daily. i can hear them moan and groan until they are ready explode. the worst is when you get one with slight defect in it from the factory, it can disintegrate in a day. messy, messy.
  • 2 0
Love it ha ha must be brutal. If I see you around next summer we'll have to stop for a chat.
  • 2 0
Wow! I not even disabled and I want to ride that! No disrespect... I don't want to HAVE to ride it. But it looks like a blast.

Allright..... Thats freaking awsome!!! Give iT up for our Tour wheeled friends!!!!
  • 2 0
After seeing what Stacey is doing on 4 wheels I realized I suck at riding on 2.
  • 4 0
