Santa Caterina Valfurva hosted the opening day of the event.
Daybreak in the Italian Alps.
Out of the darkness and into the light, the bikes leave the garage to take on 60kms of Italy's finest.
The first day is not super hard to help the riders get into the swing of things. Nobody was complaining about the 1000metre gondola lift up to work towards PS1.
The top of PS1, 2774 meters above sea level.
Sam Foos from Bontrager was stoked on filling his lungs with fresh Italian air after the trip across the Atlantic from Wisconsin.
Simon Gegenheimer was the first rider off on stage one of the at the inaugural Trans-Rezia.
Tracy Moseley just loves riding her bike. Retiring from racing full-time wasn't going to let her miss out on six days of fine singletrack.
Wild wild terrain.
Rifugio Branca welcomed the riders for lunch before they hiked up below the Forni glacier.
Negotiating the wobbly bridge and traversing across glacial debris to PS3.
With backdrops and bedrock day one has been a classic
On the hoof navigation and blind technical riding challenged the riders around Santa Caterina in the Stelvio Park natural trail area for day one.
Rachel Walker from Hope Technology was just happy to be riding after a hairline fracture in her hip sustained ten weeks ago.
Tracy Moseley (Trek Factory Racing) leads out the ladies but by the tightest of margins as Nathalie Schneitter (Rose/Vaujany fueled by UltraSports) is just 34 seconds behind in second. Meggie Bichard (Fuji Bike) sits in third spot.
With long stages and tight times the riders had to push hard all day. James Shirley from the Radon/Magura Factory Enduro team took the lead on day one from Davide Sottocornola (Cico Bikes DSB) with Simon Gegenheimer (Rose/Vaujany fueled by UltraSports) close behind in third.
After seven hours in the saddle the riders have clocked up just over 30 minutes of timed special stage action and there's plenty more for them tomorrow.
There are five more days for the riders to battle through. Follow the progress on Instagram, Facebook, or find more information at the Trans-Rezia website.
I thought the picture on the front page was an enduro racer throwing down some sort of awkward looking superman over one of the gnarliest river gaps I've ever seen.... needless to say I was very disappointed upon finding the actual image. Still looks like a cool race though!
How do you even get into one of these. This race gave out 14 places not including the 10 pros they list as guest riders. 5 of those 14 places are reserved for pro team riders. That leaves 9 out of 27 slots for us mortals....
@jeremiahwas: Thats what I thought too, but I was curious so I looked up the registration form. Low and behold, only 14 slots given out. You know whats worse.....1200 pound entry fee WTF!!!??? Thats insane and essentially limits it to pros who's teams will pay that for them.
@ianswilson815: Those events are expensive but cheapass like you and me can get the gpx afterwards and do the course with a couple of friends. It is a win for everybody in the end.
Hotel, meals + lifts are included. Life is expensive in this part of the world, you have to take that into account too.

Also I’m jealous.
