Tragic News - Stevie Smith Passes Away

May 11, 2016
by Cycles Devinci
Canadian Downhill Legend Steve Smith Dies at 26

Rider’s drive, determination, and love for living will be remembered by all those whose paths he crossed

World Cup sensation Steve Smith passed away this afternoon after suffering a massive brain injury resulting from an enduro motorcycle accident in his hometown of Nanaimo, British Columbia. He was 26 years old.

"Today we lost a great person, who taught me about myself and influenced many,” says Devinci Global Racing Team Manager, Gabe Fox. “Stevie was a fierce competitor, an honest friend and a rider who made me proud on countless occasions. I am honoured to consider him my friend for so long.

At UCI MTB World Cup MT ST ANNE Quebec canada

Smith hailed from Vancouver Island, where he sharpened his mountain biking skills on the rainforest trails of Mt. Prevost. A force on the Canadian downhill racing scene for years, he became an international household name in 2013 after pocketing World Cup wins at Leogang, Hafjell, and Mont-Sainte-Anne, Que. Those efforts culminated in the World Cup overall title the same year—downhill racing’s ultimate achievement.

Smith is revered by fellow competitors and loved by friends, family and fans, who’ve been following what had been an explosive start to the 2016 season. Pushing past injuries that led to consecutive sidelined seasons, The Canadian Chainsaw was back in podium form this past April for the UCI WC Mountain Bike opener in Lourdes, France, where he finished in second place.

A driven athlete and fierce competitor, Smith was humble and grounded off the track. He was a notable influence on all young and aspiring Canadian gravity racers and others around the world. He was also a key mentor to friend and DGR teammate, Mark Wallace.

I would not be anywhere on the bike without Steve,” Wallace says. “Most importantly he taught me to be confident in my abilities, race my bike properly and take risks. As training partners, we pushed each other to the limit."

It is with a heavy heart that Felix Gauthier, Cycles Devinci President, commented on the sad news.

‘’We are all devastated by the loss of our friend Steve. He gave us such strong and powerful emotions, especially in MSA when he won on home soil – such an inspiration for us all. All our thoughts are going to his friends and family.’’

Downhill at the 2013 Leogang UCI MTB World Cup Finals Austria.

At home, in his close-knit Vancouver Island community, Smith was known as a consummate outdoorsman. This is where he spent time fishing, camping, and sinking birdie putts on the golf course. His spirit was infectious and inspirational. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his close family and those he positively affected. Steve Smith is survived by his devoted mother, Tiann, sister, Kara, his uncle, Eric, niece and nephew, Myla and Luke, grandmother, Judi, and girlfriend, Caily Schenkeveld.

His family remembers him as a great warrior.

Steve was the most successful Canadian Gravity Racer of all time,” Fox says. “His passing leaves a huge hole in our hearts here at Devinci.

during the 2016 UCI MTB World Cup round two Cairns Australia.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 21 at 1 p.m. at the Vancouver Island Conference Centre in Nanaimo, B.C. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the “Stevie Smith Legacy Fund” at www.gofundme.com/23k7fus. Funds will be earmarked for a Tiann Smith initiative, assisting talented young athletes.

I had the privilege of spending a few days filming with Stevie over the years and he was just as rad in person as he seemed on camera at World Cup races. Fiercely competitive, funny, blindingly fast on a bike, just a genuinely rad dude. It was so badass to see a Canadian win one World Cup downhill race, let alone the overall title. Stevie was a huge source of pride for Canadians, especially those lucky enough to call Vancouver Island home. I know he’s influenced a whole generation of young riders on the Island and shown that it’s possible, with hard work and a beard/moustache, to compete at the highest level of the sport. Stevie, thanks for the inspiration! I’m going riding today in your honour.

Well said Scott. Certainly one of the largest influences in Canada to inspire a generation of up and coming riders. RIP Stevie.

Very well said Scott. I only every met/talked to Stevie once when he was stuck on the lift with me at Whistler, but his charm/humor/humbling attitude was the mark of a true World Champion and representative of Canada...Condolences to his family and friends on their loss.

This is an absolute shock in a year that has already seen untimely passing of legends of our sport. I was a huge fan of Mr. Smith and happy to see his return to podium threat at any event. The only solice is knowing he passed doing what he loves, many can't say that. My deepest condolenses to his family in this difficult time.

I am heartbroken. I was lucky enough to have the chance to buy one of Stevie's Wilsons right after his WC year. It was the most stoke-worthy moment of biking for me... my dream bike straight from the best in the world. And then Stevie signed it for me. My bike has meant so much to me even before this. Now it is my absolute treasure.
  • 4 0
 Ride in peace bro.
  • 1095 6
Stevie is not only protected top-80, but also a tv-safe top-20 rider. I therefore propose either at Fort Bill as the next race, or perhaps more appropriately at MSA later this year, that the UCI allow a ghost-lap in his honour. His current ranking is 12th, so let's let him have his last run down the track in 12th spot out the start-gate. The crowd, organisers, commentators all pay a silent respect for his lap while the TV cameras track his would-be movements down a silent and empty track, then the biggest f**king cheer you've ever heard roars out down the entire track top to bottom as his name is posted on the board at the finish line. I think this would be a powerful and fitting tribute for a fantastic racer who had won the hearts and respect of so many from such a young age.

Surely with enough support and knowing enough people in the right circles we could make this happen? @scottsecco @mikekazimer @rachellefrazer @mikelevy

@Hwulex: That's an awesome idea dude - would be amazing for this to be made a reality.
  • 12 1
 @Hwulex:
This is a wonderful idea, it would mean so much to so many.
To add another option to your idea. Maybe a rider could do a slow run in honor of Stevie kitted out in a commemorative kit so fans on the hill and watching on the net can have a visual for his 'final run' The riders identity can either be known (maybe a past champion) or kept secret so it is all about Stevie.
Something needs to done, he was, is and always will be a champion to so many.

I don't think anyone epitomized the fact that riding a bike puts a smile on your face like Stevie did. What a terrible shame. RIP to one of the greatest.
  • 15 3
@Hwulex @MTBcrash combining your two ideas - how about Claudio's course preview being done by an anonymous rider wearing Stevie's race kit or a commemerative kit? Probably more exposure, and a video that will live on. Plus I would hate to be the guy waiting at the start gate to go down after the 'ghost'

I'm sure a lot of people would buy them to commemorate this AMAZING CANADIAN RIDER and PROCEEDS could go to his GOFUNDME campaign....Plz Make it happen boys!!!  @Hwulex: Thanks for this. I just send this to David from the UCI: Hi David
what sad news. How big is the emotion. We lost a brother. Can we express our condolences in a proper way? In the pinkbike I found the idea from User @Hwulex, that during the next WC race in the top 20 may be an empty slot, a ghost lap. This idea collected 721 votes yet.
An start time piep without a rider, The camera followes just the ghost, showing all the respectfull good bye waving fans. I just want to pass this idea to the UCI and Red Bull TV via you. In an kind of empty room this idea seamed right to me, dont know a better reaction.
Stevies ghost will be there anyway, let us say goodbye, on the track, and in front of our computers.

Kind regards
Uwe

  • 61 6
I'm gonna go ahead and say what @joalst said when someone made the same wish about Dave Mirra's death...even though probably none of us here are fans of the Kardashians, we should recognize that any loss of human life, whether a mountain bike star or an infamous media celebrity, is a tragedy. I think we should respect that--even though we're bitter, angry, saddened, confused, etc. about Stevie Smith's death--by not wishing it on others.

And ditto to your last statement--RIP, Chainsaw.
  • 2 4
I think it would be a great idea for the next uci to let them put Stevie in 1st place. Just in his memory. This just sucks balls. Never knew who he was bc I just got into downhill last year but when I saw his bright red jersey and him blasting in Lourdes I knew this man was special. I was listening to this sad song when I saw the headline and my heart dropped. m.youtube.com/watch?v=70oEKQSXGJU
Just listen to it and feel devastated as I did Frown RIP

@theofloor: thanks for the mention. I'm glad you remembered that comment. I saw this one yesterday and I'm simply sad that there's another "reason" for this comment. Unbelievably bummed, especially for Stevie's family. His mom was a big reason he got to where he was. Watch his video from 2010 where his mom shuttles him. It's pretty heartbreaking to watch

 @joalst: 2008. Filmed earlier.

Saw this on FB and was just hoping it wasn't true.... RIP Chainsaw. I'll never forget that first segment I saw of him being shuttled around by his mom and how insanely fast and big he was going. I just wish we got to see him back up to full pace one last time.... this season sucks.
  • 20 0
Same thing I thought of. Glowed with pure determination.
  • 12 0
Agreed. I saw a picture of him pop up in my local DH Facebook group, and I was really hoping it wouldn't be this... What a rough year. RIP Stevie

I had the same thought, I saw it on Facebook and hoped it was some sick joke, RIP Stevie Smith. gone far to young!

heartbreaking to see that now. sad day.

I don't know why but I saw the title and instantly hoped it was some sick joke. This is so sad. Stevie was one of the most incredibly inspiring types. As others have said, life is short. Way too short for this champion. RIP, Chainsaw.

@mdg3d: Thank you for posting that up. Those last few clips are insane for how young he was at the time. That "gap" to berm... ah man.

he inspired us all, he was the prove that dreams really do come true if you work hard ! Now I still cant believe, Rest in peace, I´m sure, nobody rides the trails in heaven faster than you, Stevie..

@GabrielDugas: I agree, but it means a lot to me. I started mountain biking late in life and never thought I would get into downhill. That video segment changed my mind.

I stayed up and watched Lourdes live w/ my wife a few weeks ago, when Stevie was up i was telling her about that segment w/ his mom. It always stayed w/ me, and as he progressed through his career my perspective of what that segment was all about changed.

RIP chainsaw

@ReformedRoadie: As tragic as his loss is, as a fellow parent, I cannot even begin to imagine the pain his parents are going through. I hope they can find peace in his living his life far more in 26 years than many that live to 80.
  • 11 0
@scott-townes : same words. Since that shuttling segment to this day I have been following his career and cheering for him. Shit, I feel like I knew Stevie. I feel so low.

I wish strength to the family.

Its been 24 hours since I heard this terrible news and still can't comprehend that this enormous talent will no longer being riding with us. Many amazing comments on here but my favorite so far is "a bit of Stevie inspiration on every ride". Couldn't think of a better way to honor him.
  • 214 1
Shred in Paradise brother. To the wonderful Mrs Tiann Smith - I don't know if a grieving mother would find any comfort in the comments section of a website devoted to your sons passion, but you must know the incredible influence your beautiful baby boy had on the world during his 26 years here. The entire cycling community around the world is with you, and we'll all celebrate his life alongside you, no matter where we are.
  • 36 0
Man, the first thing I thought when I saw this news was how devastated his mom must've been. Just brought his segment with her shuttling and him shredding to mind.
  • 21 0
Well said, she obviously was a huge factor in shaping Stevie into the person that he was -- few parents have that level of devotion. She is an amazing mother who brought the world an equally amazingly gifted rider.
  • 447 2
Thank you sooo much...yes I do find comfort in reading these comments. It makes me feel good inside to hear all the love that is being sent out. I wish I could thank everyone for their support personally. It was heart wrenching to have him leave us so early, but the Stevie Smith story will not end here...I will make sure he lives on inside us.

@Stevesmom: Hi Tiann, I lost my favourite person in the whole world last year, My elder brother drowned trying to save another person, he was liked by all who knew him. I don't often look up to people I have never met but your son was one hell of a guy from all i saw. i truly loved to see him ride and it brought me great joy to see him progress as a rider from the days on evil bikes to what he has become. i think all of us recognise the warmth of Stevies heart in his smile and you could see that he was a truly amazing guy by the way he conducted himself and helped others. credit to you for raising such a beacon for others to follow. I have never shed a tear about someone i hadn't met until today, so that speaks as the the impact your son has made on our world. I still don't fully know how my mother is coping with our loss, so i couldn't possibly say how you must be feeling. All i will say is don't fall into the mistake i made where i felt guilty for feeling happy on occasion afterwards. i thought that i should never feel happy again after i lost my brother. but only recently realised that it was an insult to to his memory to do this because he would have been so upset to learn that his memory was being used as a source of pain instead of pride and love. It doesn't get easier, you just get better at remembering the good times
  • 41 1
@Stevesmom: Thanks for driving Stevie to the top of that mountain in seasons. I'll never forget that.

My image of Stevie has developed into a man with a curly-q moustache, a big grin, and a Canadian emblem on his left shoulder, representing his country to be the best in the world, atop that Devinci Wilson.

For Mother's Day, Stevie might not be around, but his talent, personality, and race results have given you the attention to become a symbol of what it means to be a mother who enabled their son to achieve his dreams. Its hard to top that kind of mother's day gift. He got unlimited G.N.A.R. points for that.

All the videos help capture what Stevie was about and immortalize him in the mountain bike community and in mountain bike history. You might not realize that your image is immortalized as well.

Thanks again for quite literally driving Stevie to the top.

@Stevesmom: People all over the world are with you and your family. We are missing a great guy, a wonderful person and a world class rider. I will never forget watching the video where you do drive the car up to the hill and then wait Steve to arrive at the bottom... You are blessed woman, being the mother of Stevie..
We would like to support you in any way and will help you.
God bless parents like you. Keep up strong. We all love you.

One of my favorite things about Pinkbike is the international love shared here for Mountain Biking. If you pay attention to the comments it will make you understand how good this world is; from Ocean to Ocean.

Looking through the comments and seeing how impacted everyone from AROUND the world is by the loss of a such a nice and awesome human being, is really hearting.

Steve Smith was a Canadian rider in a sport dominated by Brits and riders around the world. I was expecting to see a lot of North American love.

But, looking through the comments you see flags of the UK, Germany, Brazil, New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Greece, Guatemala, Philippines, Spain, Scotland, Bulgaria, Portugal, Peru, Slovakia, Indonesia.

All wishing the best for his family and sharing their devastation to the news. Its so amazing that a 26 year old guy that just loves to ride mountain bikes can effect so many peoples lives from across the globe. The majority, having never even met him.

Steve Smith was such an inspiration to everyone and through his passing; true to his nature, he has inspired this International Community to go out a ride for him.
  • 2 3
This is so true man, the shocking news were the first thing we shared and talked abount with my riding buddies, i was and still am very sad for the trajic lost that the entire MTB comunity had suffered... May he rest in peace and that his family and friends will find comfort. A true legend that's for sure! RIP mate, we shall ride in your memorium.

no. I had the pleasure of meeting Stevie in a restaurant in Nanaimo, me a father of two young boys eating a quiet lunch, when a young man wearing a RedBull ball cap walks in. I stop and look, hey, that's Steve Smith I whispered to my wife. "Are you gonna talk to him?" ...I didn't know what to say as I'm not the kind of person who gets star-struck and bothers people who I don't know. I thought that I wouldn't get another shot to shake his hand and wish him luck. I mustered up the courage and waited till he was done and walked up, introduced myself and told him that me and my kids love watching his races and riding and we'd be watching his 2016 season closely and cheering him on. I shook his hand and wished him luck. He was not phased, polite and thanked me. He gave me a smile and a thumbs-up as he walked out. Small things but it's pretty cool when you meet someone who's impacted the world you love so much. The riding world that is. You meant a lot to us, Stevie. Rest and ride in peace, brother. See you on the other side.
  • 7 0
"Small things" indeed but it's awesome when those people exceed expectations based on their solid character, as evidenced by many of these stories.
  • 13 4
I saw him twice. One of the raddest dudes on DH World Cup Circus. Quite a humble and intelligent guy, there was some "depth" to him, that there's more extraordinary stuff about him than just riding a bike. Not saying it to make him come out better, I piss on public norms, but he really was adding unique stuff to the table, as we could see in Cairns. Last year in Val Di Sole I overheard him talking to Gabe the team manager about getting a new training bike and he gave me many chuckles. Ehhh... what can you do. If God exists and heaven's there he totally gets 53 DeVirgins. Take care of him old man.
  • 10 0
@Stevesmom The season that Steve won the World Cup my kids and I would sneak to the computer if it was too late or too early to watch the WC races. I would tell my boys (4 years old and nearly 2 at the time) "That's Steve Smith! He's reeeeallly fast and he's from Canada! All these other riders? They want to win and they're from all over the world. They're trying to go faster than Steve." They'd ask, "Is he the fastest? Is he going to win?". "Not all the time but he might be the fastest today. Let's wait and see." When they raced Leogang we watched rider after rider take to the course. But when Steve rode down that last track we were on our feet. I could NOT sit down when he was on course. For some reason there was pressure on ME and I was sitting in my house! "c'mon Steve!" I was tearing up watching his performance and composure and commitment as he rode his bike into history with nothing left behind on that track. I just couldn't hold it in. I was witnessing a person reaching a new level of potential in real time. It was truly a special moment for us and we'll be talking about that for years to come. We all high-fived and hugged! He inspired us and he hit legend status that day.

  • 60 0
"A driven athlete and fierce competitor, Smith was humble and grounded off the track. He was a notable influence on all young and aspiring Canadian gravity racers and others around the world." Exactly our experience, as he chatted multiple times with my son (age 10) at Whistler and did a full interview with him for his school assignment on "hero's". My son will be gutted. what a loss for mountain biking and my heart to his family and friends.

Same here. Just shocking. Terrible. I was checking Facebook at a traffic light (yea I know) and it was at the top of my feed. I was just stunned reading it. I had the guy behind me leaning on the horn because I was just sitting there when the light changed.

I did the same thing, it's just so unreal to wrap my head around it, one moment you see them ripping it up in the World Cup and in movie segment and now this?!?!? I will always remember his part in strength in numbers during the race scene, he will forever motivate me to ride harder and feel the satisfaction you can reap from it. RIP Stevie Smith, Long live Chainsaw, your mustache and smile will be forever remembered
  • 3 0
And the same for me too...My girlfriend asked me what was wrong with me and I told her and even she was absolutely shocked and nearly cried. And she only got into Mountain Biking round about a year ago. I told her whenever Steve Smith was at the start gate or in one of his many cool edits that this is my favourite rider because he was so down to earth and just a genuine inspiration. A true sports man and hero has passed away. He will surely be remembered by all of us for all the good things he has brought into the sports and the lifes of so many people. Absolutely gutted....
  • 50 0
This is just tragic. Stevie was one of the first mountain bikers to ever truly inspire me with his iconic segment in Seasons. He went on to become one of the greatest downhillers on the planet, but I will always remember him as that unbelievably talented kid, racing his Mum to the bottom of the mountain with the dream of being number 1. You did it Stevie, now rest in peace.

Of all the deaths that have occured this year, this one hits me the hardest. Stevie was the reason I started mountain biking after I watched him light it up in 2013. All the fun that I've ever had on my bike is because of him. Ride in peace Stevie...

Coming from the island just half an hour away from Nanaimo, I grew up watching Steve ride. Truth is I never wanted to equal his riding ability because he was on a whole other level. I simply wanted to have the same smile on my face every time I finished a ride, because I saw how happy he was with pursuing his dream. In tears today and utterly devastated to see my hero pass. I'll continue to push myself even harder now knowing you're pushing us islanders to chase dreams we never thought possible. RIP Steve, your smile showed the world to live life, and love the people around you.

 Dear Stevies mom,

Unforgotten is the scene from "Seasons", where I saw you both for the first time. From then on, every time when I saw Steve I had to think about his awesome mom. Please don't think for even one second that you should have protected your child better. You've done everything right. You respected and supported the passion of your child in a way a mom couldn't have done it better. With your love you made a legend who will live in our hearts forever ...
  • 7 0
Absolutely. As much as Stevie is an inspiration to young raw talent, so much are you an inspiration to any parent. He knew where he wanted to be and you did just what you could to help him pursue that. This accident doesn't change anything about that. Be proud!
  • 23 0
I came out of the woods today to hear the news that Steve Smith has passed away. The kind of news you don't believe is real at first read. But it is. Ive meet Steve a few times over the years, but last year my wife an I met Steve again at Fort William last year. He spent probably 15 minutes with us talking about bikes, race courses, riding, BC, an other things...I'm sure he had more important things to do on practice day but he took the time to hang with us. I thought it was poor form when CBC didn't report on him winning the World Cup. It will be even worse form if they don't report on his passing. He was an amazing Canadian athlete and ambassador. His impact and influence to the sport of mountain biking world wide should be known outside of the circle of pinkbike.

Oh come on........that's just wrong...... I didn't know him but I feel like I just lost my best friend. I was there when he won the WC at Mont Sainte-Anne, I remember the crowd's reaction, what a great moment it was, and what a great memory it is. You will be missed, Steve. R.I.P.
  • 13 0
I briefly met Steve at Crankworx Whistler 2014.I was walking through the village with my 10 year old son in the evening. Steve was out injured with what I recall was a broken ankle. My son recognized him from behind in the fading light and whispered "Dad, I think that's Steve Smith!" Well, he overheard him, and stopped turned around to talk to my star struck son. It made not only his day, but his trip. At that point I could care less how awesome he was on a bike, he showed he was a top notch guy. He didn't need to take the time to talk to some kid he didn't know, but he did. Classy!

Normally I don't comment much on here and ride my bike instead. But a few words to this big loss of a great person of one of my favourite sports:

I never met Stevie Smith personally but just by following the WC coverage and some videos/articles regarding him you could already tell that this was one of the most humble and down to earth guys in the biking world with bike riding skills beyond what a normal human being can think of. With the death of my father in a sports accident I know how it feels to lose someone loved. My dad died in a hang-gliding accident, one of his favourite hobbys in life - and im happy he didn't die in a car accident for example...

But on the other hand there will come great things with a tragic loss like this - even if that sounds completely absurd. I always appreciated life and all the great things I can do. You should appreciate it to have the oppurtunity to do what you love. Do it often and don't just talk about it - you have the chance to do it. If you want to be a downhill pro, try to achieve the dream. If you want to just ride your bike - do it as often as you can. Also spend time with your loved ones that mean a lot to you, don't just talk about meeting up.

Life is only short from my point of view if you didn't do the things you love and if you wasted most of your time talking about not having time for anything. The thing is what I want to point out: Take your time for the things and people that you love! I think Stevie would be really happy to see all the people comment on here and after that go out for a ride! He died way too young but I think he really enjoyed his life.

My thoughts are with his family and close ones - for me you never passed away Stevie!

26 ain't dead - shred with pace Stevie!

Had the pleasure of meeting Steve and buying a bike off him just a few weeks ago. Very genuine down to earth guy gave me his cell number and said call anytime. Sad day. My condolences to his family and friends. The Spartan will hit the trails in his honour this weekend
  • 1 0
I took my Spartan out last night and had the fastest run of my life. It had rained the day before so trail conditions were perfect. Getting out helped keep my thoughts positive yesterday.

Nothing but love and condolences to sSeve's family and friends. That's my town, and he was our hometown mtb hero. Fighting tears back in the dentist office with my 2 year old right now. RIP Canadian chainsaw massacre. You will truly be missed.

Even 50 yr olds have heroes. You will be missed Stevie! So much style, so much inspiration!

This f*cking sucks. I've never felt so depressed from hearing that one of my favorite athletes/inspirations has passed. I just watched UnReal again yesterday and was loving his video part and felt so stoked to ride. I was so excited for this year of WC racing knowing Steve was healthy. It won't be the same without the Chainsaw.
  • 10 0
Stevie has been an inspiration to me since I first saw his Seasons segment. I would ride at Prevost and stop to scope out his movie lines while shaking my head in utter disbelief. His video parts and race runs on the razor's edge between phenomenal and reckless always had me on the edge of my seat with sweaty palms. He was an incredible mountain bike ambassador, a constant source of entertainment and excitement, and a living legend. I know his family and friends must all be so proud of his accomplishments and although he has passed, he has left an indelible mark on our sport. I started a new job about six weeks ago and put up three photos on the wall of my cubicle: my wife and I, my son, and a race shot of Stevie. A colleague next to me said, "Is that you on the mountain bike?" I said, "No, that's Steve Smith, the greatest Canadian mountain bike racer of all time." Rest in peace, Stevie.

OMG WTH.. Bad enough pill to swallow with KG leaving us now SS what a shitty year 2016 is for amazing people leaving us! All best to his family and friends and fans of the stouche one, ever since I watched him in Seasons MTB DVD series while recovering myself from a broken neck and spinal injuries head included, Watching the collective movies over and over I've been a massive fan of him and his riding, the best 2 segments on the Seasons DVD for me were of him at home being shuttled by his Mom on his home track and then his amazing ride on MT 7 Psychosis track, truly an exceptional athlete and person, Rock on in the stars Stevie Smith! You have left enduring memories! I know there will be many similar sentiments and tributes but this is how I feel and for some reason it actually hit pretty hard, maybe I have an afinity with Candians since I have ridden with a few of you and know others throughout the years on and off the bikes, obviously harder on close freinds and family etc, but still the lump in throat and eyes is tough today and Im a MM, I dont get like this even at funerals! Peace dude.

I woke up this morning, looked out the window to see a miserable, extremely wet Wednesday morning. I crept back into bed again an thought "sod riding today" I then picked my phone up and found this sad news.

I'm gunna ride today and I'm gunna enjoy it........for you brother. RIP

This is all just too much to take in! Stevie, we all already miss you, not that I haven't already but, I will cherish every video with you in it... The collective videos now mean more to me than ever......... Next months DH w.c race will not be the same, I hope all the riders do a train down the track for you before the race!  I'm so torn by this, I can't believe that something like this can happen so quickly. One of my favorite riders passed away, really unbelievable news. Shred in peace stevie, I'll never forget the amazing things youve done on and off a bicycle.

May you rest in peace Stevie brother, absolutely gutted you have left this world way too soon. My condolences go out to the Smith family and friends.

I only had the chance to meet Stevie in person once, for about 10 minutes while buying a bike from him. I wish I had spent more time and had more of a chance to converse. I feel absolutely heart broken that I didnt get to know him more, and I really wish I had been able to spend more time with such an awesome character and one of my heroes.

I know that Stevie and McGazza are now shredding in peace. #longlivechainsaw #McGazzaForever

You were a true inspiration to us Vancouver Islanders Stevie! I remember how proud I was when you finally picked up your first WC win... And then you went on to follow it up with the WC Overall next year. Just the biggest beauty taken way too early.. RIP Stevie, you will be missed!

Looking at the flood of comments it's clear to see that Stevie was an inspiration to the entire mountainbiking community. His section in seasons got me so pumped to ride every time I watched it. He's one of the reasons I'd get off my arse and do the thing I love the most. He was so determined to be the fastest and make his passion his job; he achieved it and inspired thousands doing so. That will always baffle me. Ride in peace Stevie.

I was fortunate enough to catch a chairlift with Stevie at Whistler last year. In the 10 minutes our lives crossed paths I could tell he was a very genuine and down to earth guy. He actually asked me a ton of questions about the trails I was riding and what I liked about them. It was like talking to a mate I hadn't seen for a while. R.I.P Chainsaw and condolences to your family and friends.

Although I never met Stevie, I'm sitting here in shock. What an incredibly joyful and inspirational person. I'm tearing up. I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to Stevie's Mom, family and friends. Rest in peace Stevie.

I literally just opened this up wile we weren't doing anything in class and saw this on pinkbike. I nearly had a tear come up on my face. My friends thought I was crazy for being so sad for someone who died that Id only met once. I explained to them that Steve was one of the main people that got me into Downhill. Now its my passion. I always admired him a lot, not just for his riding but for his attitude toward things. He will be very missed. RIP Steve.

Its going to be really weird tuning into Fort Bill at 5 am and not quietly yelling "COME ON STEVIE" so as to not wake up my lady friend.
  • 5 0
Steve, I will ride harder this week end, though it will be not as fast as you, I will try hard so when it makes me smile I can take a moment in your name and will shed a tear. That will be my humble way in how I will celebrate your life, your short here visit where you touched many of us. Fortunate are so many that you were able to reach. Thank you for that.

Please make a donation to the “Stevie Smith Legacy Fund” at www.gofundme.com/23k7fus. Funds will be earmarked for a Tiann Smith initiative, assisting talented young athletes.

I decided to skip out on riding today but after seeing this. I can't I just can't. Im doing it to honor you Stevie. Because you no longer can and life is too short to be taken for granted. God rest your soul. Condolences and prayers for your loved ones.

The world is a darker place with you Stevie, you were an inspiration to me. We all have a short time in this life, but yours was way too short. I've had the pleasure of meeting you a few times and you were a gentleman every time. I enjoyed watching every race you were in and I was a proud Canadian seeing the enthusiasm and charisma you brought to the race. When I am riding and I feel a breeze at my back lifting my spirits pushing me to go faster and do what I love I'll know it's you. May you ride in peace.

Absolutely gutted. What a shock! My daughter knew before me, and didn't want to call and tell me. She knew I'd take it hard, hits close to home, having lost my best friend Danny riding just 7 months ago, who I know would be torn up just as much as myself, then losing my inspiration Dave Mirra. Now Steve Smith...what a start to 2016, be safe out there, rubber side down. Thought and prayers to friends and family. Ride In Peace Stevie, RIP.

I'll never forget the day he won the World Cup. My wife who isn't into DH was jumping up and down with me as he crossed the finish line as we were watching the live stream. We were both so amazed.

Truly a huge loss. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He touched and inspired so many of us that I'm sure he had no idea.

He will not be forgotten.

I for one am in favor of, at least for this year, renaming Whistler Crankworx to "Smithworx".

Ride in peace Stevie.

I had the honor of riding up the lift with Stevie and another big name pro I won't name this past September at Whistler. What an amazing guy. Incredibly friendly, stoked to be riding, and even gave my buddy and I some pointers on a couple lines. He even introduced himself like we didn't know who he was. It was truly an honor to spend just a few minutes with a World Cup Champ. It was refreshing to talk to someone who is so well known to have zero ego, and treat a couple guys he had never met like we were his friends. Especially when I compare how he interacted with us compared to the other pro sitting next to us, who wouldn't even say hello. For what it's worth, I think being a World Cup Champ is far more impressive than winning Joyride 4 times. RIP Stevie, I always rooted for you the most in the WC races, and more importantly than being an incredible rider, you were a genuinely nice person, and I would have loved to have spent a few more lift rides with you.
  • 7 1
Lord, grant me the ability to trade the lives of the current top US political candidates to give Stevie at least two more days on this earth. One riding and one more to say a proper goodbye to his family. RIP

It won't be the same without you Steve! You were always an inspiration to me, and of course you beat me in every race back when we were groms. You'll never be forgotten. Sending lots of love to the family.

So a little while a go I was in the back of an ambulance, collapsed lung, 4 broken ribs, broken wrist, smashed shoulder and all sorts of other bangs.... I was struggling to breath even with the oxygen plugged in....and it didn't look good.... so is worth it?.... On the way to the hospital I heard a story about a 19 year old who woke up semi-paralysed, no accident, no condition, he just woke up that way.... You never when your time is up or something will strike you down... I know two things, one I would rather live it and risk it than sofa surf my life away....and two that the Angel in a green uniform that kept me alive won't ever be forgotten.

Stevie running the table down the final stretch of the 2013 season to take the WC title was unbelievable and one of the proudest moments to be a Canadian. I must have watched his final Leogang run a dozen times. I only wished there was more local media coverage recognizing his epic win.

Stevie: you are a hero and an inspiration. May you Ride In Peace, my friend.

In the movie “Seasons:” the segment with Stevie was one of the best, we all mountain bikers could relate. It was honest, genuine, sincere and inspiring. Anyone who ever watch this movie relates to the mother and son moment. In 2013 we were at St Anne when Stevie energized the crowed and take the win! The experience was once in the lifetime (words can’t describe it). You honestly had to be there to feel the energy of human unity. Anyone that follow Stevie and have seen this segment felt a part of the family and achievement. That moment wanted you to be a better human.
My deepest condolences go out to Stevie’s family, friends, biking community (recognizing a star in a making) and especially his mother. She is such a special person for letting her son be the best athlete and supporting his dreams. I can speak on behalf of many people who he has touched. Thank you for raising such a great human! We will all miss him, a part of all of us died today.

I remember meeting Stevie at Crankworx 2013 and i was so full of emotion to see my idol, I came up to him and all I could say was "I love you man" he had an ear to ear smile, only covered by a bad ass moustache. It was my only time meeting him and he was an awesome, inspiring and down to earth guy, ALWAYS pushing the sport and himself to the limits. I'm still at shock right now and it has been hours since I got the news.

Shred in paradise brother, I hope we can ride once I'm there. Watching world cups at 5AM isnt gonna be the same without you
  • 4 0
It was such a relief to see Steve's Mom commenting and staying strong. I had a major depressive episode triggered by thinking about her. Steve's segment in Seasons is one of the best things in movie history, but let's be honest, it's his Mom segment.
  • 5 0
Spent the last 15 minutes saying this can't be real, it's only on some small sites, but there we have it pink bike official. Really didn't want it to be true I guess. One of the best. RIP
  • 4 0
Mountain biking has lost 2 great athletes and awesome guys in less than a year. I'll always remember Stevie's enthusiasm and his crazy 2013 season fighting all the way to the end for that world cup title. Still it will be hard watching Rampage without Kelly McGarry and world cup DH without Stevie Smith.
  • 4 0
I was really touched by the segment in seasons. Stevie was the guy i was rooting for. After a few years of watching his riding progress, he developed what I thought was a unique riding style, (inside out I believe). After that he became an inspiration to me because I wanted to feel like I rode like that, so smooth and playful and just how his moves flowed together.
Mountain biking has lost one of the greats.
Rest in Peace Steve
  • 4 0
Stevie Smith, because of you a generation of young DH riders is going to take over the podiums for the next good while and the scene on the island is world class. You've touched the lives of riders everywhere and put Canada on the worlds stage. Thank-you, and rest in peace.
  • 4 0
Crushing. If a person's life is judged by "how they lived" as opposed to "how long they lived", then Stevie had one helluva life. The footprints that he left are huge and the impact that he had on everyone in the mountain biking community will never be questioned. I think that many of us had some of our greatest rides after having watched a Stevie segment from one of the Collective films. RIP and thanks for that pride that you gave our country.
  • 4 0
Thank you Steve Smith. You were my inspiration to start downhill racing. When I started watching downhill races I realized a Canadian rider the same age as me was winning world cup races on a Canadian Devinci Bike that just happened to be the same bike that I had just bought for my first full suspension downhill bike. I thought to myself maybe I could win a race on this bike, so I practiced up for a couple years, entered some races and finally won a race last season. You are a true Canadian that represented us all in top form. Watching the world cup races last year just wasn't the same without you and your come back at the start of this season was more than impressive. You will be missed and never forgotten, we will never forget the Chainsaw Massacre!!!
  • 4 0
I fired up my chainsaw and shed a lot of tears for you today buddy. I wish I got to watch you grow older. We had our challenges. But through it all you never ceased to inspire me, and many others. And I knew you had it in you. To show the world that you could overcome adversity and be among the best again. Go get em sender.

@Stevesmom I know at this time words do little to take away the pain and confusion you must be feeling right now, but I just want to say I am so sorry for your loss. I hope that reading these comments helps you realise how much your son was loved and admired by so many of us. He will forever be remembered as a legend and a hero in the world of Downhill.
RIP Stevie

I recall working in the office late one 'particular' day. No prying eyes, so of course I was going to watch the 2013 World Cup final race. I was amped regardless, but when Rob W. shouted, "He's up by two seconds!", I think my heart nearly exploded. "Man -- he's going to do it!" Steve was destroying that course. Not long afterward I heard Rob's classic, "Look at the time!" Boom! Arms in the air I stood up and was shouting from sheer joy. "[Expletive deleted], yeah, Stevie!" I don't follow or get caught up in any of the usual team sports, but I get it. I understand the passion those spectators display. Frankly, the only sport I do follow is downhill racing (no disrespect to our enduro brothers and sisters). When our boy from Canada won, I felt national pride. One of the many great things about downhill racing is that we lowly mountain bikers tend to be happy for whomever wins a race; and, I can confidently say that on that day the world was genuinely happy for Steve Smith.

My heart aches for Steve's mom, his family and friends.

Gonna really miss watching him give his all on the trail, every time- on the WC, DGR clips, and banger video segments. Such an inspiration. From shuttling w/his Mom in Seasons to on top of the sport w/the WC overall. RIP Steve.
  • 3 0
RIP Stevie, I've only talked to you a couple times. But I'll always remember congratulating you on your first WC win, and how humble you were. I remember riding last winter and you ripped by me on one of my favourite trails in Nanaimo, like it wasn't the same trail I was riding. You were a great rider and a great person. I'm absolutely gutted by this. My thoughts are with your family and your mother especially. Ride and rest in peace young legend.

I recall Stevie on an alligator float many years ago at a pool at Diablo Freeride Park in NJ for the US Open. I remember thinking what a silly goofy guy and then someone telling me who he was. Then I saw the race and the results! What a down to earth and humble dude. I've told so many folks about hanging with Steve in the pool and that alligator float. Definitely a sad day. It was tough telling my girlfriend who always asks if Steve is racing. There was something special about his character that just grabbed her (and many others). Glad to have been part of the riding community for so many years and to have met and followed such amazing individuals such as Steve. Going to miss seeing his smile and great attitude at the world cups.

Far across the Pacific Ocean, here in Taiwan, I bet I'm not the only one who feels a huge sense of loss. It's a shock! I'll never forget the true champion with a mustache. My condolence to his family, friends, and the community.

Great rider, even greater person. Im from the same town as Steve and we would often see him ripping up the trails, but he also always had time to stop and chat to any one. He even gave me brand new parts when he switched over from Shimano to Sram. Always a classy guy and an inspiration to many especially me. He will be missed. Peace brother. RIP
  • 3 0
Oh man, That's just... I don't even have the words. Stevie has been an inspiration since I started riding seriously. His segment in Seasons is my most watched piece of mountain bike film by far. To this day, I listen to Orca by Wintersleep when I need to get fired up before digging deep. Every time I met him he was kind, funny and took the time to make me feel like he cared and was interested in what I had to say. It doesn't feel right. I hope that his family and those close to him can find some peace in this senseless loss.

Heck of a guy Stevie! You (parents) raised a wonderful son to bless the mountain bike community. Thank you, he will be greatly missed by all.

I was going to say "Am I the only one with a few tears on their keyboard right now?" but then I read the endless comments, and I know I'm one of thousands.

RIP Stevie. We met one time in Kamloops, and you changed my life forever.

Tears a flowin' for my 14 year-old and 27 year-old selves alike. Thanks for all the inspiration and breathtaking moments over the years. Hemingway wrote that nobody lives life all the way up except bullfighters. Well, these days I don't think anyone lives it all the way up except professional mountain bikers. Well played, Mr. Smith, you will be missed on many more days than today. Peace, respect and love.

Unfortunate is an understatement.... I can't even fathom the fact he is gone.... Watching the World Cup DH and seeing Stevie come up with that little Canadian flag beside him name.... Man I will never forget those moments in which he made me smile.
  • 3 0
Such a huge loss for our sport and for Canada. I'll always remember Steve for being that man that hooked me into watching world cup racing with his amazing run in Mont Saint Anne! Most memorable race I've seen to this day. It had me literally screaming at the TV screen! Thoughts and best wishes going out to his family and loved ones.

Can somebody stop the year? I'd like to get off now. This f*cking sucks. Mirra, Mcgazza, Smith. All of these guys were great people and great riders. If the bike gods could hold up for a few decades that would be great. RIP, don't ever stop shredding.
  • 3 0
Stevie, while you have officially left the Island now (as your mom said in your section in Seasons) and did so far too young and way too damn soon. However, you achieved all of the goals you alluded to in your section in Seasons all those years back and much more. You inspired a nation of cyclists young and old and you captivated the MTB world. Every place you went you left a positive impression on the people you crossed paths with from every account I've read or heard. Only the trails you shredded had anything bad to say about you. Your hard work, dedication, and immense skill and desire thrilled and energized us all. Your legacy as an ambassador and a trailblazer will never be forgotten. Most of us mortals hope to accomplish one great thing by the end of our lives when we are old and senile. You made tremendous sacrifices and you still managed to do it all and then some, by the age of 26. Rest in peace Stevie, you were a staunch competitor - we're all going to miss you dearly. Condolences to his friends and family.
  • 3 0
Longest list of comments I have ever seen and this is only as Europe is waking up to the news..... Checked my phone when I woke up and felt my heart sink. Much like Kelly McGarry he was a rider that everyone loved no matter where you were from. My thoughts go out to all his nearest and dearest.
  • 3 0
What a tremendous loss for mountain biking. A DH legend, Canadian icon, and consummate bad-ass has been taken from our sport. His contribution will only be matched by the impact of his loss - truly irreplaceable. Going to miss him badly.
  • 3 0
I cried. Deeply saddened to hear about this, he just seemed like the nicest guy you could meet. I never met the guy or knew him but I think because of the small size of the worldwide mountain bike community, the videos and stories you see about these guys and the coverage of the races, you feel a bit like you know them too, like part of their life. Then with Stevie, well as everyone can understand too, because of the Seasons segment when he was a kid, it feels a lot like you have followed his journey too. I'd like to hope we can all take some condolences from the fact that he achieved his goal, he wanted to be the worlds best downhill mountain biker and he achieved that, he won world cup races and he won a season overall to be No. 1 in the world in 2013, it makes me happy to know he made it there.
  • 3 0
So sad. I'm 35 and I can't imagine this young. On the other hand, this guy reached the apex of his sport and being a good human before he was 25. Some people live more in 25 years than most people live in 80. Man left his mark. RIP Steve. To Steve's mom, your son was incredible and while your sadness is unimaginable to most, hold your head high. You should be so proud.
  • 3 0
This is a monumental loss to mountain biking. I think back to when he won the overall title and one thing I remember clearly is the respect for Stevie transcended borders and patriotism. Literally people from all over the world were routing for Stevie because they understood how deep he had to dig from within himself to get those results. It was something that everyone could relate to and it really did inspire something in all of us. While this is such a tragedy, I think it's important for all of us to remember that Stevie served his purpose in this world, he was put on this planet to go faster than everyone and flow like water while doing it. He passed leaving an unforgettable mark in this world and while I didn't know him at all, I have to thank him. Let the chainsaws wail above us Stevie. Kick back, crack a cold one, and try not to laugh at us. RIP.

'Born to be' can be an overused, cliché statement but when describing Stevie Smith as born to be a professional mountain biker; it is fact.
We were introduced to this dedicated young man and his equally dedicated Mother in his video segment in Seasons many years ago and it was clear, he was destined for success. For us Canadians, we've watched with pride as this talented kid progressed and grew and ultimately took the World Cup DH Title, all with style, grace and his unmistakable, charismatic presence.
We've been with him all the way; the entire nation (as we were when Dustin Adams represented us all in DH).
This is the saddest day for the Canadian mountain bike community. Our hearts are heavy as we think about Stevie and his family. A smile returns when we remember this young kid we we're all introduced to back then, the kid we've loved ever since.
  • 3 0
Too many young riders getting killed. Stevie wasn't only a world class athlete, but a rad guy. As a young rider I was always awe-struck by flashy racers with huge sponsorships and epic race results. Watching Stevie, just a normal guy who dealt with normal struggles while continually progressing as a rider, was the first time I really caught a glimpse of the "path" that bridged groms like myself to big time racers. I may never find the end to that path, but it is sharing the journey with other riders that makes our sport amazing and our bonds unbreakable. Catch ya on the flip side, Smith.

Has anyone reconsidered how they ride/what they ride/what protection they wear, as a result of the unexpected and tragic deaths and or injuries (man hopefully this is it right?) in the bike community so far this year? Maybe it's because I'm older, but for some reason, this one has me really thinking. I'm 33, grew up on bmx, have been riding mountain bikes for 10 years and am confident on a bike like I assume most of you/us are but for some reason, Stevie's death really has me broken up. Maybe it's remembering first seeing him in Seasons and the fact his mom was a part of the segment that really brings it to heart. I don't know. Have fun but please be safe out there everyone. Peace and love.

Very sad news to wake up to. During 2013 I worked with Atherton racing I will rember the season well for the battle for the World Cup overall between gee and stevie. A memorable race season indeed. Rest in peace stevie.

Europe is just waking up to this tragic news, I'll be at Fort William along with many others and it's our job to make sure he is remembered with every ounce of passion he deserves.

 Chainsaw's chain snap suddenly..
R.I.P Stevie..

love his final run at Leogang, he breaks the heart of Gee, now he breaks the heart of the whole mountain bike community

RIP Stevie....you inspired me to give my 200% while out on the trail. I admired the dedication your Mom had to shuttling you back and fourth. I admired your passion and work ethic to your craft. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
  • 2 0
I'm an old dude that only got into mountain biking 5 years ago and I remember watching Stevie's segment on Seasons and then feeling so happy for him when he won the World Cup. I think about Stevie's Mom in seasons, "that's what mom's do" and I'm holding back the tears. My condolences to his family...especially Stevie's Mom.
  • 2 0
So sad. I remember him being so driven at Fort William - one of the best riders to watch ever. On one run early in his career he overcooked it into one of the berms high on the course and went over the top - so spectacular! He always gave 100% which is the way life should be. So sad.
  • 2 0
Just can't believe this, so sad. Such an icon for Canadian mountain biking, he definitely inspired me (and I'm sure everyone else!) in such a big way.

I ride moto and the speeds and intensity are super crazy. One thing goes wrong at 80km/hour and it's over. Same with DH I guess as well, it's all just a huge yet calculated risk. No disrespect but I'm hearing this was motocross and enduro--there's a fairly big difference. I guess it doesn't matter in the end, but would also provide some closure on a fairly selfish level to know...
  • 1 0
How was the accident, was he wearing a helmet, did he fall on his head? They talk about a massive brain injury. We see MOTO GP riders falling off their bikes at +80 Km/h but they turn out ok. Do you know how the accident took place?

I'm not sure why this has effected me so badly, maybe because I'm a bottle and half of wine in for the night, or because Steve Smith was my mtb hero; well, hero in general considering I've have he pleasure of conversation with him before. He was genuine, real, not out of touch. He was, because her earned it. We think that eating sh!t is just a part of riding/training but the reality is that this could happen to any of us at any time rather we're on a weekend rider or a serious racer. I have to be honest. I'm having a hard time not shedding a tear. Steve Smith was, and always will be, one of he man faces of mountain biking, not just downhill, that has inspired so many people to to be themselves through the bike. Lastly, I have helped run a shop that been a devinci dealer for years, and I would strongly suggest that if anyone feels the need, please contact Devinci via web site or social media and tell Max or Pavel how grateful we are they have supported such a great person for as long as they have. Cheers everyone, lets celebrate Steve Smith's influence this weekend.

I'm completely devastated! I had the pleasure of meeting him on the chair lift in Whistler and he was the nicest guy ever. Let me take a selfie with him. Ride In Peace Stevie!

Damn it, I just wanted to go to bed after a long day at work and studying. Now I'm just sitting, tears running down my face with no clue what to do, for one of the people who inspired me to push harder is now gone. It just had to be Spring "Season" that takes him from us. Frown
  • 2 0
Season, Follow Me, Unreal...This is seriously unreal and I wish I could walk into a world of wonder and get you back! You have been the best example of what it takes to be a true champion, rad lad, and chainsaw massacre! My condolences to his family and friends. What a devastating loss! Totally gutted...
  • 2 0
Terrible news. I always loved watching his riding. So fast, so unafraid. There's a video clip of him casually hopping a DH bike onto a picnic table while his friends watch from the cabin. Looked like he was ready to reclaim some podiums this season.
  • 2 0
Rest in peace Stevie, I had the pleasure of meeting you in the middle of a filthy Moe Joes dance floor one night where I realised how genuine you were. You have always been one of my favorite riders, your incredible bike skill and style captivated us all. I still have my signed poster from you that that i'll always cherish. My thoughts go out to Smith friends and family! Rest in peace Stevie...

Aww, what a shame. So sad to here. Steve had a warm face and a way of letting you know it's gonna be alright … keep shredding. Always looked forward to seeing him on screen, so inspiring. Get RAD in peace on that great big mountain in the sky.
  • 3 0
Even I n a sport full of rare guys and girls who are both incredible athletes and uniquely excellent people Stevie always stood out. What a shame. What a loss. He will be missed.
  • 2 0
I was talking about Stevie just a few hours ago. It started out as a conversation about the Devinci Troy, while I was pedalling uphill with a buddy. I immediately made a case for the bike based on Stevie's runs on it, some of which were captured in some beautiful edits. We had the best ride of the season so far today. Now this, and the buzz is thoroughly killed. However, I'm going to ride a lot more this week, and I'm going to smile every time I think of Stevie Smith.
  • 4 0
I called him Stevie as though I knew him. I looked up to him even though I'm older. A hero and a brother to everyone here. He left his mark.
  • 2 0
WTF! Oh my gosh dude. I simply can't believe this! My first and hopeful thought was that it was April Fools day. I can't even believe this! My heart goes out to Stevie's family and friends. I'm so sorry for the sudden loss of your son/brother/friend Frown
  • 2 0
What ??????? ???????????????????????????????? rest in peace Stevie ???????? you were the rider who made me want to ride mtb for real, you made dream all of us, you are a true lengend. All my condoleances to his friends and family.
  • 2 0
Hopefully it can be some small comfort to the family to see the reaction of the whole mountain bike community to Stevie's passing. His legacy will live on through his impressive record and inspiring film segments; I know I'll be doing a marathon tonight. RIP to a young man who did great things and had to leave too soon.
  • 2 0
you will never be forgotten. An inspiration to the MTB world. Thanks for all the happiness and excitement you brought to the sport. He passed doing one of the things he loved the most, going really fast. My deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. I will grieve but your spirit will always be pushing every mountain biker to its limits, aspiring to one day be as good as you. RIP.
  • 2 0
You will probably never hear me say this ever but my heart goes out to you guys and would love to send my support. There is but one silver lining to this whole ordeal at least he went on 2 wheels. Although I never had the privilege of meeting the chainsaw outside of seeing him in the whistler line he has influenced me as I imagine he influenced many of you. They say all of the brightest lights burn out the fastest. Like I said I send my support out to his kin and dgr. Now go rip those clouds.
  • 3 0
Why why why...... My condolences to his family. Steve was my favourite racer on the circuit and seeing him back in form this season put a smile on my face. Canada lost a legend in the biking world.
  • 2 0
Stunned to see this news on PB. Almost felt like a joke of an article as I was so looking forward to cheer for him and see him take a few DH titles this year on his comeback from winning 2013 season overall. RIP to our Canadian DH biking hero!
  • 2 0
Stevie had an amazing approach towards mountain biking and competition. This man was the epitome of never give up , to see him come back to the top at round 1 in Lourdes was astounding after injury and some time off the bike.

The world has truely lost something special today, Stevie will be remembered by generations to come as the mad man from Canada.

Race in peace Stevie Smith.

Ride in peace dude you were awesome! Im only 16 but 26 is so young its scary how life is easy to lose! Stevie smith has always been my inspiration and I will allways want to be as rad as him. Its really sad to lose this awesome rider. May him and all the other crazy rad mountainbikers be ripping in heaven! I hope he is happy where he is now and that he can ride in heaven with mcgazza. Ride in peace Stevie!

Rest in peace Steve Smith, Canadian sports and downhill mountain biking couldnt have been represented by a better person. I had the privledge to ride with Steve once in Mont tremblant and the guy was nothing but smiles and passion for everything and everyone. Keep slaying trails wherever you are. Long live the Canadian chainsaw massacre.
  • 2 0
To his family, you raised him well because anyone I know who's met him says he was the nicest guy. I vividly remember his part from Seasons talking about the daily shuttling with his mom.. The support you gave him in what he loved is admirable. You raised a legend. My heart goes out to you.

f*ck this shit. This is f*cking devastating. No words can describe how big of a loss this is, I have nothing. I am so used to seeing Stevie Smith every f*cking Crankworx and our whole group pointing him out saying holy shit thats Stevie Smith. Hauling ass on our shitty local trails and yelling "STEEEEVIE SMIFFFF" like a bunch of f*cking teenagers pretending to be their favorite hero, even though we absolutely suck at going fast. f*ck, this hits so close to home and I never even knew this man, he's one of the first icons I remember when my friend dragged me to Crankworx in 2013. I swear he is the reason I'm into this sport, just seeing the marvel surrounding him. I remember going home after my first Crankworx and watching every video clip I could pull up on youtube of this guy.

f*ck this. Can't believe it.

His mother once said he wanted to be number one in the world and he did it. He got to make a living out of what he loves to do. Ride. The Canadian Chainsaw shredder will be missed.

Noooooooooooooooo! Just shattered. Never met him but he was my hero. I am almost twice his age. Condolances to his mom, girlfriend and family. Also to his sponsors, especially Devinci. Can't believe it.
  • 2 0
RIP Steve. I remember watching the world cup you won, rooting for Gwinn at the beginning. But you won me over with your great attitude and your funny stories. Still remember the interview where you thanked your mom for dropping you off at the top of the trail and picking you up at the bottom, over and over. Thoughts go out to your family and friends. I can't believe this.
  • 2 0
I can't believe this. I didn't know Steve or have ever met him but this is hitting me pretty hard because he was such an inspirational guy and an all around bad ass. He was definely someone to look up to and learn from on how to live life. I was really looking forward to seeing how well he'd do this season. It looks like he lived a fullfilling life with no regrets. Rest in peace man. You won't be forgotten.

RIP Stevie. I'll always remember when I saw you at the bottom of Mt. Tzouhalem. I didn't say anything, but I probably should've just manned up and come over to say hi. You talked with everyone around you like they were your peers, not your fans. I'll always remember you as legend of our sport, a humble victor and an all around awesome guy.

Today is very sad day, yet another young star has been taken from us. This video has always stuck in my mind when i think of Stevie Smith. I oh so feel for his family especially his mum. She worked so hard to help him acheive so much in so a short time on this lump of dirt. RIP STEVIE youtu.be/v2Y3_Nygzq0
  • 2 0
i don't even know what to think...let alone what to say. I lost a few loved ones during the years and i learned that there are no questions to be asked. No words, no reasonment, no rationalization can fill the void we feel right now. Memories of what he accomplished and also of when he failed are the best way we can honor this champion, this human being, this brother of ours. Rest in peace , Stevie. We lost a great man today.

59 and going to shred for all I am worth tonight. Thanks for the memories bro. Heart goes out to the family especially mum. Take care

At least he died doing what he loved. Sad moment, rest in peace Stevie. I will always remember him as the guy who want to ride bikes as a full time job, with his mom shuttling him, with his grin on his face
  • 2 0
I just got back from a business trip and heard the bad news, so shocked! My thoughts went back to that early vid of his mum shuttling Steve on his practice runs, her support, his dedication and how he broke a generational family mould to venture out and follow his dreams. Inspirational! ..Sending comforting thoughts to is family and friends.
  • 2 0
Which brutally reminds us that the intensity of off-road sports has its drawbacks. And we'll remind the talent he had, and we'll remind standing on our toes when he won on its own ground at MSA. And if patriotism is not a canadian thing, then for once we'll all feel united in thoughts as we offer all due respect to its family. Pinkbike flag at half-mast.
  • 2 0
There are words to describe these unfortunate circumstances like tragic, sad etc, but they just don't seem to cut it today. So I don't have words for what has happened and I don't want to believe that it did. To his family and friends, i am so sorry for your loss. i never met Steve, but to me he was larger than life. The most style on a bike that i think i have ever seen. From that mount 7 clip, roosting that tree, to the seasons edit with his mom shuttling him up to the top, he had speed on his side. RIP Steve Smith.
  • 2 0
i wish this was a bad dream....Seasons, forever imprinted in many minds one of the best segments with Stevie and his mom. much respect and best wishes to the family going forward. Stevie is a genuine inspiration and success of downhill mountain biking sport. RIP Stevie!

“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”

― Hunter S. Thompson

Such a shame Steve didn't get his fair share of time to ride, but I always think of this when people wonder how it is we can all love such a dangerous sport (and/or lifestyle) so much.
  • 2 0
I feel so numb....... I am 48 years of age and today I have shed a tear. When I originally watched films like roam and the collective Stevie inspired me to ride from that day on .....and I have followed him ever since. I have seen him mature and become the best rider in the world. The best riding clip to date for me and always gives me goose pimples every time I watch it is when Stevie and Gee ride in New Zealand. Gee sums Stevie up perfectly....WILD, FLAT OUT, CHARGING & ALWAYS PUSHING HARD ...........as I am typing this I am still shedding a tear.........one of the saddest days of my life !
  • 2 0
If any locals want to do a pedal-up on Prevost, Thursday at 1pm, I'm heading up to pour out a couple of Luckys in Steve's honor. Just a slow pedal up the fire road and then down $1.85... It would be nice to have some company.

Though times, take care out there.
  • 2 0
Steve was Canadian, by that I mean he WAS Canada. The guy was the epitome of everything I remember of my time there. Such a laid back, funny, passionate and happy guy. He may be gone, but by f*ck did he cram a lot into the short time he was with us. He was a source of inspiration for so many, it's a testament to his character that so many people have shared this news and commented. His Mom can hopefully find some comfort in the fact she raised a truly amazing human.
  • 2 0
I only met Stevie twice when he was just coming up. When I read this yesterday I was with my son and he saw that I was upset by it. We seem to have lost so many good people the last twelve months. The young fella asked what was going on and who Stevie was and after I finished explaining he looked at me with the wisdom of a 10 year old and said, "why don't you go for a ride, dad? It is what he would do, I think." To his family I express my deepest condolences.
  • 1 0
Terrible news, he was looking so fast for having all those injuries. Never met him but his race run(s) in 2013 is what got me into downhill. I never thought I would yell at computer/tv screen watching mountain bike races! Thanks for introducing me to the sport Stevie! You're already missed! No sure how to add a link but here's his exciting race run on Canadian soil!

So many of us never got to know Stevie like his close family and friends, but I feel like he managed to touch everyone in our sport in a way that made us feel like he was part of our riding family. From our riding family to Stevie's, our hearts are with you. Those of us who can get out on the trails, will be doing so in his honor.

Such sad news. Stevie was a great guy and inspired many to push harder than they ever have in what they do. He also inspired many that it doesn't matter what background or place you are from, you can always make it if you put your mind to it. He will be missed. Just to add I am all for the name change at Whistler. RIP Stevie.

Condolences to Stevie's family and friends.
The film follow me with Stevie & Gee hammering down the side of New Zealand being filmed by the helicopter is my fav. all time bit of mtb filming, the music is wicked, the speed of the 2 of them racing one another - is all that mountain biking is - fun. When the run is finished and Stevie is saying "best trail ever" well makes me smile. Am going to make a cuppa and watch it now.
I have watched Seasons too many times, but liked that his mum featured in the film, showed his family values.
Class act.

I am absolutely gutted. He was definitely one of the best, and most down-to-Earth riders out there, and a joy to watch. I will be riding my Devinci Wilson in Whistler this summer, thinking of him, and there will be more than a few glasses raised to him as well. Thank you Stevie, and Ride in Peace.

Cant believe seeing such a legend go at such a young age, he inspired many. I got to meet him at crank works years ago and he inspired me to ride. Such a humble nice guy, thoughts go out to his family and friends. You will be greatly missed, ride in paradise.

Just can't believe this. My husband and I have watched Steve Smith for years and are so heart broken over the loss of our favorite rider. Absolutely loved this kid. He is such an inspiration to many people including us. We never got to meet him, but I wish I could tell him what a privilege it was to watch him grow in the sport and how incredibly proud we were to watch him succeed. He is truly going to be missed. My heart hurts for his mother, family, and the biking world. RIP Stevie.
  • 1 0
He grew up about a half mile from where I live and many of the guys I ride with were there as he grew up and became very extraordinary. He was definitely a hero to me and I have a huge lump in my chest that won't go away because of his loss. This is one of the saddest things I know.

R I P Stevie. Stunned and numb. I also dropped my phone when loading PB. Just lost for words. @Hwulex a great idea to show support. Stay strong Smith family, thoughts are with you.

When this news popped up on my Feed I literally could not believe it! It's just absolutely gutting! Probably in my opinion not only one of the greatest riders but just one of the main guy I always looked forward to watching a run or edit of and even though in British there really wasn't many others I would have liked to see place above him and genuinely believed it was only a matter of time before he was back on top! I hope he is always remembered as one of the greats of MTB! Rest peacefully Steve.
  • 1 0
Stevie really made a big impact on me from his Seasons segment and while it's always sad to lose someone in your sport this is particularly heartbreaking news. I'm sure that he's lived a more fulfilled life to 26 than many who've lived well past that. Respect for following and living your dream, deepest condolences to his family and friends and ride on in heaven bro. This is a very sad day for mountain biking
  • 1 0
Great guy, a huge inspiration and so much more. We all know that. I remember, when I once read a statement, which said that when someone dies we do not really loose this person, but we should think of it more like of a sun during a sunset and then during the night. Just because it is dark and we can't see it doesn't mean it's not there. That's how I'll think of you Stevie, rest in peace buddy and take care of all your loved ones. Much love from Poland to all of them!
  • 1 0
The first time I heard of Steve Smith was in the movie "Follow Me". For such a young guy ,he just seemed to give of a certain persona and positive attitude. Plus, he carved up in that segment. Been a huge fan ever since.
RIP Stevie, we'll miss ya man

It would be a nice tribute if at fort William they announce Steve smith in the start gate, keep it empty, and let the timer beeps start. Then any and everybody that brings their chainsaws can let them rip for a proper send off. I didnt know him whatsoever, but it has impacted and saddened me as if I did. Ride in peace Chainsaw!!!

We saw Stevie a few solid days at Port Angeles and Whistler. Each lap, he had the most pleasant demeanor and that big ole smile nonstop and people loved him. Pretty impressive to see someone larger than life behave that way in the flesh. He was one of my all time favorite riders.
  • 1 0
Just logged on for the usual dose of PB before bed and read the tragic news- it is heartbreaking to hear of another young rider dying but if there can be any comfort in Stevie or Kelly's deaths - they died doing something that they loved, took them all over the world and has inspired millions young and old. My thoughts and wishes are with his family and friends -
  • 1 0
Absolutely tragic. Stevie was one of my favorites on the circuit and always seemed to be smiling and just happy to be on the bike. Probably the most humble backstory I've ever heard of with his mom shuttling him to start out. A huge role model lost for our sport
  • 3 0
Shocking and so sad. He seemed like the kind of guy you wanted to be friends with and that you would want repping your brand. We lost one of the best.

Another great champion of our sport passing on far to early and far too tragically. Sincere condolences to family and friends. Again i have to tell everyone to cherish each and every moment and take nothing for granted.
  • 1 0
Prayers and condolences to his family, friends, and even fans. Though I was never fortunate enough to meet Steve or see him ride in person, I certainly looked up to him as a rider and this loss hits home. 26 is far too young. Rest in peace brother.
  • 1 0
I'm Canadian for a day today, because I want to feel this tragedy even more so. I just have to keep in mind that he left this life doing what he loves doing, so that beats being bedridden and dying of cancer or diabetes. I'm going to ride my bike with more fervor from now on.
  • 2 0
Such sad news, thoughts go out to his family and friends. I first saw Steve in Seasons, which I have watched so many times before riding and it has been great to see him achieve his dreams over the years. Ride in paradise.
  • 1 0
Man. That's harsh.. My thoughta go out to his family and friends. Loved watching him race and will probably never forget the MSA win, was amazing. Moved to the island and was really hoping to run into him on the trails, always seemed like a rad guy.
  • 1 0
Watching him in The Collective/Anthill videos and then ride into the 2013 World Cup overall got my family, including two, young shredders totally into DH. We're shocked to say the least. Our thoughts go out to his family and those close to him.
  • 1 0
RIP Stevie, what an inspiration to me. This is so sad. So young. I have no words. I think about the family and friends. I just bought my first devinci mtb yesterday because of him. It will always remind me at him. cheers mate!
  • 1 0
My condolences to the Smith family. Stevie has the easy part in all of this. The hardest part of losing somebody, is knowing they've gone without you. I can only imagine the feeling of losing a child or a brother. Being born an only child I wouldn't know, but being a father of two, watching my children's simple and seemingly insignificant struggles is heartwrenching. Though I've never met Steve, knowing his presence won't grace the podium any longer is upsetting enough. From what I read here, he's touched so many people's lives, and was a true Hero to many. He's a lucky man to be loved by so many. The rest of us can only hope to leave such am impact on the world. At 26 years old, he has surpassed amazing, and crossed over as a legend. Hero's are never forgotten... Legends never die.
  • 1 0
Well 2016 sucks so far, another legend gone too soon. Ride in Peace Stevie. I'll always remember his part in seasons when his mum was shuttling him up the hill. Such commitment. He knew what he wanted and kept putting the laps in until he was world champ.
  • 2 0
I can't still belive it, i'm so sad, you were my inspiration since the first time I watch you competing with your Cove. The races won't be the same without you. Ride In Peace Stevie
  • 1 0
 Rest In Peace Stevie!
You were such an incredible legend to all of us, without you mountain biking will not ever be the same again.
Looking at Mt. Prevost every time will give me chills, can`t believe that you are not with us anymore.
You wrote history you touched many of us with the way you were.
You will be missed Stevie.
Condolences to all the family and friends, I wish I could help to ease the pain.
  • 1 0
What?! Just what?????! Can't believe I've woken up to this. So sad. Since his segment in Seasons 9 years ago as a driven and funny teenaged I've loved Stevie. Was so pumped on that 2013 seasons racing and was hoping for big things this year for the chainsaw massacre. Absolute legend, absolute tragedy.

RIP Stevie.
  • 1 0
I guess with the number of comments on this tragic story that pretty much everything that can be said about Stevie Smith has already been said as much respected rider among his peers. My thoughts go out to his family and those closest too him, and can say he will be sorely missed by all of the MTB community whatever discipline you ride.

My last memory of Stevie was his manual/wheelie across the line in Cairns at the last DH, true legend styling it out. Pure Class

RIP bro, you will never be forgotten.
  • 1 0
I feel like the pursuit of being the best at anything is a real death wall. As I get older, the disappointment of drowning in high expectations is diminishing due to the infinite nature of the pressure, and the blatant impossibleness, which leaves basically everyone disappointed.
  • 1 0
26 is way too young. Like others, I too watched him grow, work hard and achieve great success ever since Seasons. Even at such a young age he was an inspiration. My deepest and most heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones.
  • 1 0
RIP... Makes you thing life is so precious and can be taken at any moment. Although we sometimes never get to the meet these guys, it's sounds draft but you feel you have some connection through watching and reading content about their lives and riding. Makes me thing of his segment in Seasons, he achieved a great deal for such a short life. Shred in peace Bro! x
  • 2 0
I just can't wrap my head around this. Such an amazing person, so young its a real tragedy to have his life cut so short. Like everyone else I to immediately go back to his seasons segment which still seems so relevant.
  • 1 0
 @Stevesmom

.....thanks for making him the human he was.... our thoughts are with you and your family in this very hard time....

he was the main reason why i got into dh.... always wanted to meet him and finally early this year i met him at the queenstown bikepark. can't remember when i met such a down to earth guy like steve...

he'll be never forgotten !!!! NEVER !!!
  • 1 0
Just like McGazza this is one rider who was living live so much it is near impossible to get that he's not here anymore. Along with many probably, that Seasons video was the first time I heard of him. It is inspiring to see how important family support can be to bring such raw talent to fruition. Along with him, his mom became famous as well. All the best to you all, stay strong!
  • 4 0
Our chainsaws are ready for MSA bro. You will ear them from up there I swear.
  • 1 0
@Stevesmom I am so saddened to hear this, Steve was an inspiration, he always looked so happy and positive, he was a great person and will be remembered.

You and your family have the support of the whole community, anything you need/want to do, just tell us, and we all will be at that.

The world lost an incredible person, but he will live in our heart for ever
  • 3 0
Chainsaw, you were everyone's favourite. A great role model in life and the perfect ambassador of our sport. We should all hope to be a little more like you.
  • 1 0
Condolences to mom and family. I followed his story since I read the article of his mom shuttleing him for training runs after school at Prevost, while she marked homework. Kept checking standings, and to see a Canadian rider even breaking the top 20 was unreal. Will never forget that run in 2013. That a Canadian from Vancouver Island won the World Cup Overall is still unbelieveable! Never met him, but all the local storys of him are great. RIP Stevie Thanks
  • 1 0
I'm just...I....I can't handle this, this is too much for me this year... We have already lost 2 tremendous legends of our sport... How can there be any justice in this world when you lost fellas like Stevie or McGazza.... It only brings tears to my eyes Frown
  • 1 0
I heard this news and am speechless!
????
Such an ambassador to this sport at such a young age. So unfair that he was taken from his family and all of us brothers and sisters of the sport.
Steve....ride that endless trail and rest in peace brother
❤️
  • 1 0
There are no words to describe the shock I am feeling right now .. Although I have never met Steve, I see him often, and know quite a few people who knew him. He made many visits to Whistler, and there was always a buzz in the bike park when he as here. He seemed like a very down-too-earth person who was the product of sheer hard work and determination. It's raining here today ..
  • 1 0
I just can't believe this... such tragic news for such a young, talented rider. I always liked watching Stevie race and although I never met him I feel like I knew him. Condolences to the family, I can't imagine what they're going through right now.
  • 1 0
Stevie, in my mind you were a rival cause I was supporting a french rider but.... what will he we do if no rival. In fact I think I was loving seeing you rididing and being afraid to see you arriving before him. You were too young to go. ... Ride in Peace Stevie, no matter you are now, i'm sure you're competiting !
  • 1 0
To see a man who has overcome the most immense of challenges to reach the very top of the most extreme sport on the planet, all the while reaching the peak of physical and mental ability attainable is simply astounding. Stevie you were an idol. To have passed doing what he loves is the greatest honor this man could achieve. Rest in Piece, you have influenced and undoubtedly improved the world of mountain biking.
  • 1 0
I can't belive this terrible news been offline for a couple days as I received a text this morning that we lost another Legend of the ridding community... Just reading some of the top posts of those who meet him strikes a spot in the soul and reading how much he inspired those of us that just watched him ride over WC racing or just videos.. It's heart breaking condolences to all his family and close Friends... RIDE IN PEACE Steve " CHAINSAW MASACARE" SMITH
  • 1 0
Have to add to this wall - Stevie is not much older than I am and it was a huge inspiration discovering him in Seasons the first time I watched it. Always been one that I rooted for when watching race replays, and always stoked on his video parts. I was so happy for the dude he won the World Cup overall a couple years ago that I was jumping up and down in my room watching the webcast of the last race! Thank you Stevie for being such a good representation and representative of mountain biking. Very sad to lose such a champion.
  • 2 0
Peace to everyone affected by this and huge thoughts and love to the Smith family! Words cannot describe the pain the cycling community is feeling, but know we are celebrating his LIFE!
  • 1 0
Ride In Peace Stevie. Too many have passed in 2016. Lost my best riding buddy this year also. Stevie... I hope you come across K-Dawg in heaven, he is a great young lad, loved to build and ride just like you. From our chat in whistler a few years back, you 2 will have a great time building and riding together in heaven.
  • 1 0
This is a tough year for all of the off road cycling/mtb world. As I look at life and reflect on the good, the bad, and the ugly... It really brings into perspective how fragile and timely our human life is on the grand scale. Enjoy each and every day with your loved ones, friends, family, and fellow riders. Godspeed...
  • 1 0
I read this article this morning and it didn't make sense and it's still horribly upsetting this evening. Stevie always came across as one of the most deserving guys in the mountain bike scene, which is saying something amongst such an amazing community of riders. This and the following seasons won't be the same without being able to cheer you down the hill. All my love goes out to your family.
  • 1 0
Lost one of my longtime friends this week along with Steve. Been a tough month......... ...RIDE your bikes people....smell some flowers........stay overnight in the bush with a campfire and small tent. Get out there as life is short and you can blink.....done. so much respect for the Chainsaw and his fight back too a nice start to 2016 and so much more we will never share. fighting back tears.
  • 1 0
Stevie, you accomplished so much, yet seemed like you only scratched the surface of your true potential. You will be remembered by all mountain bike enthusiasts as one of the greatest ambassadors of this sport. My condolences to your friends and family. You will be missed.

If anyone wants to use this, I made it to show support for the loss of a legend in this sport and one of the greatest ambassadors the MTB scenes has ever seen.
  • 1 0
I keep checking PB hoping its not true!!!! since i first seen him in Seasons he has always been the one I root for! this news just put me down all day, and was so looking forward to see ride at MSA hes like half the reason we go!!!!! Glad i got to see him race. even if it was just once. You will be missed STEVIE!!
  • 1 0
Stevie was the best positive role model you could ask for, it was truly amazing to watch his success, never got the chance to meet the man but he was always a huge inspiration, downhill won't be the same again. Legend. Ride in piece.
  • 1 0
What a tragic loss for not juat his family but the whole world. So many terrible people in the world and we lose what can only be described as a role model of a person. You have a place in all our hearts stevie. Ride in peace man
  • 1 0
Probably the most influentional rider of my generation, the reason I started taking my riding more seriously. This guy was proof that all you needed was a passion for something and you can be the best in the world at it. RIP Stevie you icon!
  • 1 0
Had the chance to see Stevie shredding in Whistler and on some WC cups in Europe. Apart the classy insane speed the Seasons segment is one of the best and most inspiring parts in a mtb movie. Mountaing biking lost an icon but gained a legend. You just lived your dreams.. we can just dream about a life like yours. Ride in peace bro.
  • 1 0
That one day back in 2010 we were at Mont-Tremblant Canadian dh race and during practice session we were on the side of the trail when this dude with a red bull helmet came toward us at a pretty good rythm.. I was like well look at this douche with a big evil bike and red bull helmet...Guy came and passed us at rocket speed and was litterally destroying the course compared to enyone else we saw that day. In the end the funny douche came forst overall with more than 20 second. Thank you Steve for all your ups and downs, you were just amazing on a bike just still can't figure how you have handled that course at this speed and with so much smoothness. Ride in peace
  • 1 0
I know what its like to watch your idol grow up and follow his career. I was around the same age as norbraten and watched him as a grom around prince george jumping everything he could and pushing himself. From watching the ultimate freeride challenge segment and his cameo on drop in to walking by him in the hallway of junior high. I'll never forget the feeling of being close to someone you know is going to do big things with their life. When I moved to nanaimo to attend university Steve was mentioned everywhere and I got a chance to see him ride provost. It was the same feeling as seeing norbs do a suicide no hander at 15, they both loved what they did and committed themselves to everything within the community of bikes. Steve gives you goosebumps. Not everybody can do that but because he's a fellow Canadian it made watching races at anytime of the morning worth it. It's like Zakk wylde said "there's no such thing as struggling, you either love to do it or you don't. Its not a pain in the ass to practice, I enjoy practicing, I enjoy travelling. If you think it's a struggle then its going to be a struggle". Steve only showed us commitment, integrity and indenting love of what he did. It's ok to be emotional remembering him. We all have a hero that makes our day and Steve was for so many.
  • 1 0
Danm.... this is so sad. He was one of my favorite riders ever since I saw him on Seasons. It was great seeing him as a kid getting shuttled by his mom and growing into one of the best WC riders. RIP Stevie Smith
