Phil Atwill: Crushing It - Video

Dec 22, 2015
by Pinkbike Staff

This. Is. Awesome! Wild man Phil Atwill takes his Orange Crush hardtail upside down and sideways in the last hurrah for the Orange Dirt World Team. Another banger from Tom Caldwell and lets just hope he never figures out how to do slow mo...

We need more edits like this! No slo mo just raw speed and rippers throwing their bikes around i love it! Thank you Phil and the crew for an early Christmas present p.s. cant wait for the Ratboy and Phil Atwill edit to be released two of the most stylish riders England has to offer
  • 25 0
It'll be dropping march time and will be bonkers Big Grin
  • 17 0
ah dude i though it was a lot sooner but i guess its worth the wait. If only someone would start making an 'Earthed 6'
  • 24 6
Im so sick of slow mo videos, I don't know why people over here and Canada insist on using it so much. Its simple, get a really good rider and film a bunch of clips on a good trail, throw said clips together and put some decent rock music in the background. I have gotten to the point where if it has some bullshite filter or a 3 minute intro just to show 1 minute of slowmo riding I just don't even bother. I will take this video over most high budget, "epic" drone shot follow cam video anyday.
  • 11 0
@NimaG1310 - funny you should say that bud. It'll definetely be worth the wait, there's a film on the way.
  • 2 0
Is it just me or do we have reckless bike riding week? First the edit of Joel and now this... So pumped on riding! Smile
  • 1 0
Where was the first half filmed? I see Aston Hill in the last bit, but is that whippy woods?
  • 1 0
 Great edit BTW!

Anyone got any other hardtails shredder video links? Building up my old dmr trail star into a trail tank and want some inspiration!
  • 3 0
@caldwellvisuals as in an Earthed film? mate its been too long Smile
  • 5 0
@alexhyland - Chinnor in Oxfordshire I believe it was. @NimaG1310 - well, it's going to be damn similar!
  • 3 0
@caldwellvisuals Shut up and take my money!!!!!!!

Another Earthed movie? Alex Rankin still involved? Loved those movies, they had THE BEST sound tracks. Here's a little bit of Peaty and Page killing it on a Crush from way back

..or a Subzero, hard to tell
  • 1 0
 pure fun!!!
  • 2 0
Pretty cool to see the similarities between the two vids..fast paced britpop, skate vid style, no BS filming and world class corner ripping.
  • 2 0
Yeah, this is the kind of riding I love. It is what we all need a nice chuckable hardtail for. It is good to be able to get yourself in trouble this easily. Good for giggles. And yeah, please release Earthed 6 on dvd, get Dirt Mag back in print so that I can get off the internet again.
  • 2 0
@vinay - you might want to check out Cranked, makes for a great read.
  • 1 0
Wow, never heard of these before but it seems like an excellent fix! My computer screen just doesn't do these pictures justice and it just doesn't feel right to, when chilling out after a good ride, stare at the illuminated screen instead of mellow paper. Four issues a year seems little these days but Dirt used to have six so it isn't too far off. For the race results I'll reach for PB anyway nowadays. My Dirt subscription automatically turned into MBUK and whilst informative, it isn't much more than PB in print. It actually lacks the amazing pictures Dirt used to have. Cranked seems to have that sorted.

Thanks again, you definitely cheered me up Smile .

Mind you it's more like Privateer than Dirtmag, which IMO is only a good thing as Dirtmag got a bit Steve Jones-heavy over the last few years.. Privateer is highly recommended as well if you can find them, or otherwise Singletrack although for me it's a bit too focused on trailriding. Brilliant pictures though.
  • 2 2
He should start using his bliss sponsor wisely and tell them to give him a full face helmet, and all round body gear with a neck protector. If he unfortunately crashes into a tree at those kind of speeds, it could be a sad picture.
  • 3 3
Pigit77 - i think full facers are perhaps a bit of an american thing. Thats just trail riding/mucking about up the woods and ive never seen anyone wearing a big lid trail riding/mucking about.
  • 2 0
@bonkywonkey Apparently I've been missing out as I wasn't familiar with Privateer either. Anyway, Cranked looks good as far as I can judge from their website. My subscription starts with the current edition 3 so it should hit my doormat real soon Smile . Dirt indeed got a bit Steve Jones heavy, I'd rather have had a bit more Billy and Ed thrown in for good measure. Then again James McKnight definitely was nice to have in there. But I'm through with that now, Cranked seems to make a proper fix.

@pigit77 More protection is always safer as long as it allows you to remain agile enough to actively absorb crashes. I actually feel safer on the hardtail as I find my limits at paces I'm still somewhat comfortable crashing at. Finding your limits on a full susser is much more dangerous. Seeing as that is just what these guys do for a living, going slower on an easier trail (that is, easier and slower for them) they probably feel just fine with basic protection. And this will be very different for everyone. What is important is that you wear enough protection to feel confident enough to commit to whatever you're hitting. I've never ridden a road racer bicycle but I'd be scared to shit riding one of those wearing no more protection than an open helmet designed for the low weight and maximum ventilation rather than some extended coverage. Then again road cyclists I've talked to think the same about crashing on a mountainbike. It is a matter of perspective and it isn't always easy to sake someone else's. Also, don't forget that the open face helmet allows your face to absorb some of the impact so that it is easier on the neck. The full face protects your face hence makes it a bit harder on your neck. The more if you wear a stronger MX helmet. The neck brace is going to help if your head approaches the end of its range of movement and it will transfer the load to your back and collarbone. It is probably much better than having your neck mangled but I'm not too convinced that it will be without drawbacks. It is just a very different loading than what your body may be prepared for. What does POC say about these? I recall they weren't too positive when Leatt released them but that's a long while ago. It may have saved Johnny Waddell but I'm not sure it doesn't just give you a higher risk of whiplash from bouncing back from the brace. Anyway, the open face for isn't that bad for general trail riding, is it? Make sure the helmet is in good shape, proper fit, wear eye protection and rely on your instincts in case of a crash. Your face will recover much more easily than your back or spine.

vinay - If you're into quality mags you should certainly try to get hold of some of the later (ie from around issue 8 on) Privateer issues. It's honestly the best mtb mag I've ever read, only Cranked starts to come close.

edit of blenki, fairclough and phil. heaven
  • 1 0
The internet is definitely way too fast for me. I received Cranked #3 a week or so ago and like their approach to think and reconsider before I write. This is what definitely put me off of one article in MBUK (which didn't even happen to be a product review for once). So here I am, well after this thread died Wink . Anyway, I can now wholeheartedly say that I love Cranked. Thanks again for the heads up! No doubt I'd appreciate Privateer as well but for now I'll keep it at this.

What did Phil get you for Xmas?..

Stoked.. Phil got me stoked...
  • 1 0
Me three!!!!!! Sickest vid in ages - along with loose riders! Joe is sick as too!!'
  • 3 2
I've said it for every Phil Atwill edit. Will somebody please make this kid a F'in sandwich. He is too skinny to ride this fast. He might break.
  • 1 0
Maybe being that skinny allows him to ride that fast. To me he looks like he gets more loose than any other rider and it makes me wonder if his lightweight build helps with balance and stuff
  • 40 12
If you're looking to learn the secrets of Phil's wild riding he's joined the B1KE Skills Instructor Team on Aston Hill. Find out more at www.b1ke.com/philatwill Phil has availability over the Holidays 27th December & 2nd and 3rd January 10am - 1pm on Aston Hill. Enquiries via the B1KE website.

Sorry but that was the most awful and shameful plug for ones own business I have ever read.
  • 48 3
what's so bad about promoting his own business, some people who enjoyed that video might be interested in that and it's just a normal post, nothing annoying. The video is full of company logos and names, yet nobody calls that awful and shameful.
  • 50 0
Riding like Atwill would fucking terrify me. Absolute animal.
  • 19 0
@bigburd What is wrong with it? Phil looks an amazing rider, it sure lots of people would be interested some skills tuition from him.
  • 18 1
I think it's great that he is up for teaching people his amazing skill, I sertianly would love to lean from him!
  • 2 1
 You're shameful. Bigburd
  • 2 0
Pretty relevant if you ask me, I'd pay him a grand if he can teach me how to corner half as quickly as he does!!
  • 1 0
@JoshdoesMTBing Got to ride with him at Swinley definitely rips on that hardtail.
  • 1 0
I'm gonna get some coaching with him up at Aston hill sometime, how did you manage to come across him at Swinley?!? @Abite
  • 1 0
@JoshdoesMTBing Lucky you I want to do that sometime as well, but yeah just by the side of one of the runs was fixing a flat went pass then going through tank traps he popped pass again then did a run with him going down labrynth dh section. Great guy and super fast. Got a video trying to keep up with him on my pinkbike from yesterday.
  • 21 1
Another couple of years when his contract comes up for a renewal, he's a man to have on your team. He may not get the best WC results, but everyone loves watching him get loose and sideways, and would be such a great ambassador for your brand and team. I love Phil Atwill videos, I think he's one of the best riders to watch rip it up.
