Join us for this heartwarming episode of Trail Hunter, as Matt Hunter and his son, Robbie, venture out for a little father and son time, just outside Kamloops, B.C.

If you learn just one thing from this video it’s this—things don’t have to be complicated to be fulfilling. A father, a son, some bikes, and a trail are all it takes. Recently, Matt Hunter took his son, Robbie, for a small overnight trip on the outskirts of Kamloops, near where they live. This meandering journey, with time to stop and explore along the way, proves that it’s the small things—the simple act of being together and sharing the adventure—that bring us joy. Little Robbie may have it all in front of him as he grows, but you can bet Dad’s going to be there to show him the way.

We ride there because it's close to home and it has nice mellow hills for the Hotwalk,” says Matt, explaining the route they chose. We watch as they noodle along mellow roads, Robbie dragging his feet to slow down when he gets a little too much speed, Matt carrying him when it gets a little hilly. It’s a trip made of moments we recognize or longed for from our own childhoods, and it's as lovely as it is uncomplicated.

The Hotwalk, a gift from Specialized after Robbie was born, has already seen plenty of action.

bigquotesHe's been riding it since he was 13 months old [he's now two]. We took the seat off and built some custom padding so it was low enough. He started pushing it around on it as soon as he could walk. - Matt Hunter

This is one of those rare videos posted to Pinkbike that I instantly share with my wife.
  • 5 0
 exactly!
  • 13 0
haha same!!! can't wait for my lil guy to shred with me!!
  • 23 0
@jarrod801: I sent it to my wife and her reply after watching was "So when are you getting the twins pushbikes?"
  • 4 0
 same
  • 4 2
@Facingtraffic: nice! my wife will take a little more convincing. she is from California, so she thinks bikes are mellow in a park or redbull rampage from seeing my pics and stories. I may have to show her the middle ground i.e. enduro Smile
  • 3 0
Did just that, then I read your comment ahah. I already got the red push bike Razz
  • 2 0
Likewise! Man, I'm taking my kids out on a ride tonight! (Ahh dang, homework, meh)
  • 13 0
Me too, only my wife asked where are the tantrums and wet pants?!
  • 1 0
 Ha! First thing I did.
  • 2 0
Out walking the dog and just sent a link to the missus.
  • 3 0
@Facingtraffic: my oldest boy is the same age as Hunter Jr. and rides the same bike. My younger two boys are 5 months old. Can't wait to do a trip like this with all 3 in a couple years.
  • 1 0
@adpeters82: Nice! How does he/you like the Hotwalk? I'm going to be starting to look around soon.
  • 164 0
This made my heart glow! Nice job Matty, Matt and Robbie! I remember when Matt was a little kid growing up 5 doors down from my parents place in Kamloops...so cool to see the circle of life rolling on! I ride with my 4 and 8 year old daughters and there's nothing better! Right on!!!
  • 9 0
Have 6 and 8 yr old daughters, just bought a used 20" Hotrock boys color for my oldest (her choice). Don't know if they'll ever get into mtb, but we currently love riding down by the local river on single track! I will enjoy it for as long as I can
  • 5 0
@sjdeweese: I have 17-month daughter but I cant wait to do the same already. Smile
  • 6 0
@ugez: Get a weeride first and take her upfront. It's a blast.
  • 1 0
@fartymarty: agreed - I found a WeeRide when my (now nine yr old) daughter was a baby. They rock. probably got stopped 20 times in a couple of years by people who after hearing me rave went and bought one.
Big Plus - kids don't wear out high quality (and expensive!) bikes. I used everything for 3 kids and sold the weeride and 2 bikes for 60-75% of their cost, so it really is an investment.
  • 1 0
@plyawn: I ride with our second daughter on the Weeride now. Also they're not overly expensive and let you ride more. Plus its good training and forces you to find all the smooth lines. Plus it's really fun.
  • 1 0
I cried smiling watching this video! Thanks for the story @bretttippie, it makes the whole thing even better. I have my first due in March and I am so happy thinking about the moments that I'll have with my child!
  • 74 0
holy shit what a cool kid....and here I am trying to delay having kids selfishly so I can have more riding time...this got me stoked!
  • 21 0
I think this is the case for half the guys that will watch this video...delaying kids for more riding
  • 27 1
I just made an appointment to get my vasectomy reversed. Snip-snap, snip-snap.
  • 27 0
I was like that too. then came the lil guy. Now I'd rather spend time with him than go ride...
  • 51 3
Don't do it. I just had a kid and my life is ruined!! No sleep, changing diapers, short quick rides are the norm. Just kidding. But seriously, wear a condom!
  • 31 0
Ten years riding trails and the most gratifying ride I've ever had was seeing my 3 year-old's stoke on single track last weekend ("I go fast dada!")
  • 15 0
My son took to riding bikes pretty quickly and now races BMX. I just bought him his first mountain bike for his birthday. He asked me the other day, "Will I be better at riding mountain bikes than you someday, dad?" I told him without a doubt he would be. Parenting isn't for everyone, but I've enjoyed it immensely. To each their own.
  • 7 0
I'd say not to delay too long for the riding/kids thing. I delayed for a variety of reasons and at 41 with 2 kids (5 and 3) I agree that the best rides I have is when they go out and learn something new on their strider or now on his little pedal bike since he was 3. I love to go have time to ride by myself too. My biggest regret is that when they are 18/20 I will be 55ish. Still planning on riding then but just wish I would have had the chance to be fast when they are fast. It is nice to beat your dad for the first time. Just, in this case it'll be because I am recovering from knee replacements. Now, to wrap up the day and get home to play!
  • 7 0
@cameronbikes: 55 isn't old. There are plenty of people 50+ who ride fast. I have a neighbour who is almost 60. She's an amazing mountain biker and absolutely rips on her dirt bike.
  • 3 0
Maybe watch the unedited version before making any snap decisions Smile my 3yo recently got interested in his balance bike and he's nuts on it, so much so I had to buy him the brake accessory. No hill is too big and no puddle is too mucky
  • 6 0
First of all, the comment from @dtimms made me laugh out loud. Brilliant. And as far as selfishness goes, @nvranka...it happens to all of us. I had my reservations virtually all of the way up until the moment I first met my son. Kids have a way of making shit like that disappear quickly. You'll find creative ways to get your "me time" in...but it will never compare to time with your little rascal(s).
  • 1 0
@nzukiwski: ....and a chunk of the ladies too...
  • 1 0
Haha that's exactly what I was thinking.. And I'm well on my way to 40,,, ISH.. ????
  • 2 0
@cameronbikes: No biggie look at Tippie.. Hes pushing 50 now and his kids are what 5ish...That dude will be shredding at 75 guaranteed.. With his daughters.
  • 2 0
Haha, this is the kinda stuff that makes me look forward to getting older. It can take its time getting here, but once it does, I am sure I wouldn't trade it for the world.
  • 2 0
@dtimms: that's how my kid started too! Now he's 1.5 yes and climbs on his strider himself and wants to ride. It's freakin awesome. He's better, trust me. Just love em!
  • 6 0
@cameronbikes: I'm 18 and have been riding a decent number of years. Reasonably fast Wink
During a day of shredding at Stevens Pass Bike Park alone I did some laps with a 62 year-old man who thoroughly outpaced me on everything from the technical gnar to the flowy jump trails.
Treat your body right and you may surprise yourself!
  • 2 0
I was one of those who figured having a kid would end all forms of MTB riding, its total bollox. Dont ever be tempted to sell your jump bike (if you own one), the most satsfying thing I do is go the bmx track with me lad and watch him shred it. Granted it took a good few years of rocking up without a bike and running around behind him till he got the nack, but its a small price to pay, now he is 5 and goes like stink!
  • 11 1
It's never too late for riding..i'm 42 and in september i raced master dh worlds at val di sole..having my 2 yo child on his strider shouting at me at the last course jump has been the most breathtaking emotion of my life..love you mi little champion..
  • 1 0
@dtimms: Amen my brother. Sage advice.
  • 1 1
@psilocybinchild: how long after consuming psilocybes did you meet this old guy?
  • 1 0
@takeiteasyridehard: Probably a couple months or so.
Kinda wish I could change my username without losing all the account history...
  • 2 0
@psilocybinchild: mushrooms are the missing link that allowed our ancestors better visual acuity and endurance to hunt and evolve as a species. They are intelligence from outer space! Lets Ride :-)
  • 1 0
@Chonky13: would love to if you were closer to Washington! Or I was closer to Moab. Either way...
  • 2 0
@psilocybinchild: I'll hit ya up if I ever get up that way on a road trip.. Heard great things about the trails
  • 1 0
@Chonky13: Sounds good! It's worlds different than Moab. Loam! Tacky dirt! Amazing freeride and cross country and just about everything else.

I want Matt Hunter to be my dad
  • 9 0
Just said this to my wife too as I welled-up, she said, 'don't you f-ing start - I'm hungry!' Ha ha, nothing like a bit of casual domestic abuse!!
  • 33 0
This one goes to the top of my Best of Pinkbike list. Good job, Matty dad. I'm a 50yr old single dad of twin girls who turn 8 tomorrow, live in one of BC's little ski/bike towns, and just picked up a gently used BOB Yak a month ago. We'll be making use of it next summer, hitting some rail trails.
  • 34 2
Single parent of twins? And a Mountain Biker? Sir I wish to tell you that you impress me more than Danny Hart. Raising kids alone must be like crashing at Rampage every second day. Rewarding but still... You are a true bad ass. Sometimes when I get attack of depression and I my stupid whiny, pussy head thinks of killing myself, I think of my wife. I don't want her to raise them alone. Our kids have kicked my butt to the ground and I've been alone with them only half of a year, only during day time.

You are a genuine badass man. I open a beer to salute you! Cheers!
  • 7 0
 @WAKIdesigns:
Let me clarify, I'm a part-time co-parent. Personally I think it's the couples with kids who stick together who are the true bad asses, balancing family duties while getting in their rides, usually individually. Seeing them out on "date rides" together is kinda cool.

Still, I've done a shit ton of riding/racing since discovering dirt 25yrs ago and my most satisfying biking moments have been with my girls. This summer we did a week-long camping trip near Sechelt, BC. While exploring some green/easy singletrack under old growth forest canopy (a BCBR trail) they had fun telling the old man "dad, move your butt out of our way".

This is what I was wondering watching the video, thanks for the link!
  • 15 0
We are about to have our 5th kid (ages 15-6) end of this month and I'm blessed to average 50 miles a week. You can do it, but I suggest you get some lights. I gotta ride whenever I can and sometimes that's at the crack of dawn or evening. I couldn't imagine life without them, too.
  • 8 0
We've got three and I agree, you have to change your expectations, schedule and availability, but having kids is worth far more than all of those "lost" moments.
  • 3 0
Congrats! Wife and I just had twin boys at the end of May. Had to scale riding back to Sunday mornings only for the time being but frankly I'm lucky the wife is even cool with that.
  • 2 0
4:30am wake up a for quick hour in the morning is mandatory some times. My 19yo just went on his first solo bikepacking trip in college, my 12yo randomly rides with me on my old SC Superlight, and my 7yo....he wants nothing to do with his bicycle right now. At least he likes skiing in the winter and I get to take every snow day off of work with them to hit the slopes.

i dont normally get misty eyed about bike vids but this one got my shop all dusty. my wife and i wont be able to have kids and this is the kind of stuff i wanted to do as a dad. Frown
  • 11 0
I feel for you and you wife Cpt.. You can still be a dad through adoption or fostering, there are so many children in the system just hoping and wishing for a loving home.
  • 15 0
I'm sure a adoptable child out there would shit a golden brick to go biking with anyone, let alone two loving parents.

Good stuff. My 2 year old has been ripping it up on his Giant Pre all summer. With the balance he's got already, I'm hoping for a transition to a pedal bike that doesn't involve those blasted training wheels at all.
  • 3 0
i can almost guarantee he won't need them...
  • 2 0
My 4yo damn near skipped training wheels completely. The only reason he had them is because the grandparents had a bike with them on it.
  • 2 2
I told my son that the training wheels were only for display in the store and we weren't allowed to take them home with us. He was riding his pedal bike comfortably within 10 minutes. Push bikes teach the balance and steering so they can concentrate on the pedaling and braking only when they transition.
  • 1 0
My 3yr old daughter went from balance bike to pedals in 5 minutes, no reason to use training wheels if they have the balance, it's just gonna confuse 'em. One of those proper proud parent moments, seeing her wobbling off down the path!
  • 5 0
It couldn't be any sweeter... it reflects the day by day life to someone who loves riding by bicycle in all its aspects...
  • 3 0
Just watched this with my 4 year old daughter. She said she wants to fish, see a moose(deer), find a rainbow, and of course ride her bike with Daddy. Now I am blowing bubbles. hashtagdaddylife.
  • 2 0
My girls are four and six years old. They've been wanting to go mountainbiking for so long, I recently got a 20" hardtail. Fits the six year old perfectly, the four year old is gutted as it is just too large for her. On her first ride two weeks ago she crashed, hit a tree stump and broke her thumb. Back home she dug out my mountainbike magazines (Dirt and Cranked) and told me it was so much fun and that she wants to go mountainbiking again as soon as the cast is off.

Sure kids are going to absorb quite some of your time and energy. But if you make it fun, it is going to be good fun. Not a day goes by without a good laugh. Now I've always been more into short blasts rather than epic rides and if you plan it wisely with your partner you can still have several of these a week. I get about three or four 60-90min rides in per week (after work) and a longer weekend ride. And as you see here, within two years you can take your kid along on an overnight trip.

You're going to cherish this for life, your kid is going to cherish this for life as well.

Best video ever to grace Pinkbike. Hands down. Ever. Period. My oldest boy is close in age, about three, and doing well on his Commencal except for an over the bars incident saturday where he wrapped his front, now chipped, tooth around a curb. Nothing is more important than your children.
  • 2 0
I can say that without a doubt Specialized has knocked it out of the park with this video. Full of emotion and real life growing stuff here folks. All those huck and gnar videos are dead in the water compared to REAL life moments that mean so much. Coming from Matt it has an overwhelming effect. Maximum respect Specialized and MATT HUNTER.
  • 1 0
That video sure takes me back as they grow up so fast! My son is 7 now. His Grandpa & Grandma bought him first bike at at age 2 and it was a Specialized Hotwalk. He loved riding inside the house and out. He soon discovered how much fun it was to ride off road and especially downhill! A couple of years after my daughter experienced the same thing on that same Hotwalk. There's nothing better than riding the trails with your kids!
  • 1 0
That's awesome and about sums up how much I love riding with my little guy. Most of my instagram photos are of him riding some of our local singletrack on his run bike! Our little guy even has his own Strava to keep track of his little rides...haha.
  • 3 2
This is wonderful. I wish I could do this with my 2 year old.. But I can't fish! And I'm not very outdoorsy myself. My kid loves riding his balance bike in the woods but it's so rocky and rooty here it's tough work for him.

How was he carrying him on his back? I'd be paranoid yes fall. And camping on a cliff?! I'd not sleep in case he woke up and fell off in the night! Also, anyone know what that trailer thing was that fitted the Enduro?
  • 2 1
 might be a BOB Yak.
  • 3 0
There are tons of easy carry kids seats for kids that snap on and off pretty quick. check out www.dolittle.co.nz or www.mac-ride.com
  • 1 0
@thebikedads: Thats great, thanks. But how was he carrying on his back? looks like he was just piggybacking!
  • 2 0
@clarky78: we have a piggyback rider which lets our daughter safely piggyback on us. She looks to just be hanging on under her own strength if you do not know its there. Never used it on the bike yet, her mom won't let me. www.piggybackrider.com
  • 2 1
 Love the video!
One thing that struck me is that bikes for kids are more and more "kids friendly" but look at those huge grips! They are the same size as on adult bikes. The kid has a hard time gripping them. Never thought of it until now. Specialized, you need to do them smaller Wink
  • 2 1
Epic that, those days are magic, never had one quite that picturesque but suck those moments up Matt. My son has just left home, and has gone from crashing on the 6 inch jumps on our local trails at 6 years old, to ripping Crabapple hits in Whistler all summer. Days like this video are essential for a father, even the ones in the rain with muck and blood, male bonding at it's messy best!
  • 2 0
Awesome! So important to spend as much time as you can with your kids, cause before you know it they'll just want to hang out with their friends. Highlight of my day today is picking mine up at 3 for some bike park laps.
  • 1 0
Not a huge Spesh fan but my daughters first 12inch bike was a hot rock. The dealer bumped the price up twice from the time I ordered it. Wait that's when I stopped being a Spesh fan. Anyway it was a great bike. I wish they would bring back the 24inch full suspension bike cause she has grown.
  • 1 0
Happiness is rope-towing my 8 year old daughter up Mt Fromme so she can ride down Espresso with me! Got my kids into bikes when they were three and this summer THEY suggested we go riding in Bend OR for our summer holiday!!!!
  • 1 0
Awesomeness. I am lucky to be a step dad to an awesome 8 year old boy. Taught him how to ride two wheels when he was 5 and we are always out riding trails when ever we can. Makes me love the sport even more to sharing it with the young Grom. Thanks for the video Matt!!
  • 3 1
Rad. He nailed it. You don't have to go far for a kid to feel like it's an adventure, and they love it. And they'll remember it for their entire life.
  • 4 1
Oh my god, right in the feels. My son came along 4 months ago and I've already found myself looking at bikes for him.
  • 4 0
Matt Hunter defines a Bike Dad!!!
  • 2 0
definitely video of the year candidate! right in the feels! My 2 year old daughter is on her stryder and loving it, can't wait for adventures like these!!!!
  • 1 0
Can anyone tell me what the backpack looking thing is that Hunter was wearing to carry his little fella? I'd love one of those!

Vid of the year for me as a dad with a 3 year old who just experienced his first taste of MTB.
  • 2 1
Cant wit to do the same with my little shredder/shredette one day. I see this scene a ton on the ski hill but rarely on the singletrack. Such a great way to introduce a lifestyle to a kid.
  • 3 1
I gotta say - Kamloops was/is a great place to grow up. Those hills were always full of adventure. Way to go Matt - pure awesomeness!
  • 1 0
Awesome story and video! Share what you love and are passionate about with your kids and never underestimate what they can do. It's an awesome "ride" for moms, dads, families!!
  • 2 0
So good! My daughter now 9 1/2 and riding many trails in Whistler. This reminds me of the early days with her! So much fun!
  • 3 0
Bike? Check! Fishing pole? Check! Cute mini-me? Check! Short drive to kamloops....oh crap.
  • 3 0
This is the stuff I want to do more of as a dad but I don't and there's no excuse. So I will. I'll take this as inspiration
  • 1 0
Me too! wish I could be as organised as Bear Grylls there, guaranteed I'd forget something important/f**k it up
  • 3 0
Well hell, I might just knock up my wife tonight after seeing that video. Oh, and move to BC.
  • 1 0
 Ah kids....
My daughter rides more horses than bikes, ...but she rips trails with me from time to time.

Stunning. I had both my boys, 10 and 2 watching this with me. We are going to plan a trip like this.
  • 2 0
I love it. My little girl is 3 1/2, she's been on the dirt bike with me since she was 2 and now comes mountainbiking with me on her balance bike. She loves it.

Most awesome video I've seen in a long time. Being a dad is the best thing ever... at it's worst it's still the best thing I've ever done in my life.
  • 1 0
Having 2 mo old little man in my arms while watching this video got me daydreaming and excited for similar adventures!! Couldn't help but get some wet eyes watching this! Pretty awersome little video!
  • 1 1
One thing more boring than a Matt Hunter video is a Matt Hunter video where he's Cam Zinking his kid around for the camera.

Only thing more vomit inducing than a hokey Hunter video is all the PB ass kissers trying to taste his shit. :/
  • 3 1
Oh man! I've got a 1-year old that loves watching his dad ride -- can't wait to see my boys doing it together!
  • 2 1
This is great and how i want to be with my kids but it turns into "DAddddddd i cant do this!!! Dad im tired can you carry/push my bike?"
  • 2 0
Need one of them little trailers and an extra 2 month of Summer. My little lad would lap that up
  • 3 0
Dad died when I was 3. Shit like this hits me hard...

Really on the fence about having kids, but this was a sweet video...hobbies don't have to die I see.
  • 2 1
Have one! My lil guy is 6 and we have so many good times like they do.... Teaching is so rewarding..
  • 4 0
My daughter is 2months now, and i still had lots of great riding days this summer. Life does go on, just gets better. And more exhausting.
  • 4 0
You can still get your riding in, you just need to be more organized and creative

Dat feeling at 2:18 when your little kid shreds the dirt harder than you.. Smile makes me smile everytime

 Great video.

For the past 7 years my 2 boys and I have gone camping/biking in the UP Michigan. There is nothing I look forward to more than that 3rd weekend in July.
  • 1 0
Awesome! Love it! Started shredding with my son 11 years ago - he's 25 now and we still get an occasional downhill day in which is the best day of riding for me!
  • 2 0
I pretty much never post a comment, but this, simply awesome!

Great video! Does anyone perhaps know where one can get that "sachel" he uses to carry his son on his back?
  • 1 0
 I was wondering the same. I think it's the Boba 4G -- www.boba.com/shop
If Matt or anyone else can tell us I'd really appreciate it. Hard to find a really sturdy kid-pack without a hard frame...

I have it on the best authority (Matt's wife) that they use a tula, that is probably not recommended for biking, but works like a charm! They have the toddler size. www.tulababycarriers.com

Can't wait to go out camping, just me and my boys...but the idea of turning family time into a commercial by having a videographer and photographer along for the ride creeps me out a bit.
  • 1 0
That was absolutely not the intent of the video at all - just celebrating doing the small things together! The parents were very careful to ensure that their son didn't know anything about being filmed - completely immersed in his dad time. He won't even see the video until he's way older - being careful not to change his perception of the experience for him!

@AMH4: I'm not saying Robbie didn't enjoy his bike and camping adventure with dad and dad's buddies, Sterling and Matt. And I'm not saying it isn't a heartwarming video. And I'm not calling out Matt Hunter as a bad dad. I just don't think that if I were in his position, using my kids would be part of the "I am specialized" package deal.

Maybe it wasn't part of his thought process at the time, but once it's up on pb tagged as "I am Specialized" with a spesh logo at the end, it's a commercial, pure and simple.

As for "didn't know anything about being filmed" you have got to be kidding. He's a kid, not a goldfish. There are both stills and video shot front on with the camera at most a few feet away, and some of the stills shown above are from inches away. My younger boy is not much older, and even a year ago he would have been asking to see the shots on the camera, and wanting to take his own photos and videos (couldn't balance a bike at 18 months, but could walk away with my full frame DSLR, turn it on, and take photos). Again, doesn't mean Robbie didn't enjoy every minute, but I would be very surprised if he didn't have a basic idea of what was going on.

@dsut4392: I totally appreciate how you would think that a young man would be aware of the camera and wanting to see the pics, etc., but Robbie has been raised without the photo influence - very carefully not involved in phone/camera use! It works and it allowed this one time filming trip to happen with Robbie being his natural self.
As far as your criticism of the commercialization of Matt's son is concerned, just reading the rest of these posts about how so many people are stoked to go biking with their kids, far outweighs any possible negative slant on the whole experience!
