In Memoriam: Kelly McGarry

IN MEMORIAM: KELLY MCGARRY

One would exhaust a thesaurus searching for adjectives to describe Kelly McGarry. ‘’McGazza’’ has been the big friendly giant of freeride for the past decade and his affable presence, a staple of Crankworx and Rampage, was instantly identifiable by the golden mane sprouting from the bottom of his helmet. Kelly was a fan favourite for his massive backflips but it was his personality which endeared him to all who knew him. He was the type of man who befriended everyone he met. Constantly smiling, quick with a joke or a laugh, he was the ultimate ambassador for New Zealand and mountain biking in general. On Monday, February 1st, 2016 Kelly McGarry passed away, he was 33. Our thoughts are with Kelly’s friends, family, and loved ones in this time. The mountain bike community lost a brother today. Kelly, we'll miss you.

Perfect invert-form from the man from an upside-down country. There were whispers McGarry would go for it and when he came screaming in it was clear it was on.

Whoa, after his massive crash where he proper f***** his bike and rag dolled face first I'd have put money on him being pretty much immortal. Such sad news. Rest in Peace you legend, may the riding be even sweeter on the other side of the pearly loamy hucking gates.

Kelly, you are going to be missed. You were the best of us, an inspiration to all of us in the riding community. You reminded us why we ride, that at the end of the day all the other BS doesn't matter, because we're having fun on our bikes. So glad to have gotten to call you my friend, if only for a short while. You were an amazing rider, roommate, drinking buddy, riding buddy, and most importantly, person. I hope the trails on the other side are better than any of us can imagine. Ride on my friend.

This is not the king of news I was hoping to wake up to this AM. A big loss to the community indeed. Watching you push the limits of your sport over the years has been amazing, exhilarating, and without gasps. Will never forget the gap flip. A historical moment in itself only to be follow up a year later by a bigger crash, two broken bikes, and you get up and roll again. Inspirational. RIP big man...

@Stranger-danger - I’m sure you didn’t mean it this way but it’s lame the second comment Aaron Gwin would see when reading this (I’m betting he does) is something relating to him at all. He didn’t ask for all the attention we give him and he certainly doesn’t need to be mentioned in the context of another rider’s death. If I were him reading that plus the 368+ ‘likes’ it would cut a little. Maybe if you’d said something regarding wheel sizes or fat bikes but not another pro rider.
Bad form.

Rest in Peace, Kelly. You god damn legend, we'll miss you.
  • 43 2
@jeremiahwas While I see where you are coming from, I think it's clear that his intent was good, and his point comes across. Whenever someone is lost, it is a strong reminder that the a lot of things we think matter don't really matter all that much. Life is so short, should be filled with love and appreciation and not much else.
  • 15 1
Wasnt expecting to see something like this as I opened Pinkbike this morning. RIP Kelly. Before I knew what your name was, I'd always describe you as "that super tall guy thats ALWAYS smiling". Thats exactly how myself and a whole pile of other fans will remember you Kelly, "the guy thats always smiling"..............

No-one knows when their ride is going to end, but if you can manage to do what you love while surrounded by friends you've really got it made. Ride on Kelly, you'll never be forgotten.

Gut wrenching news Frown Kelly connected with every viewer around the world who had the pleasure to have seen him. He emanated cheerfulness to everyone right thru the camera like very few can. My Family's thoughts are with yours....I can only hope you feel the positive support of the Biking community the same way Kelly dished it out for us.

Can we make a Kelly video of the day and photo of the day ?

Tomorrow is a promise to nobody. ...he went doing what he loved...as he fell down he was actually being lifted up to the heavens. You rest now kelly. We will miss you.

from reading all of this he truly lived the way he will be remembered. really sad too soon but a life well done. rest in peace, kelly mcgarry.

It really sucks because there's so many negative fcukers filled with hatred that inhabit this planet then there's people like Kelly, who was exactly the type of person everyone should aspire to be like - just so happy and positive and making the most of his life. And he's the one taken away. RIP man.

 From the link to stuff.co.nz:
"Fraser Gordon of the Queenstown Mountainbike Club said McGarry was riding with representatives from his YT Industries team on the Fernhill Loop Track when he suffered a cardiac arrest.

"We understand he was riding uphill and suffered cardiac arrest. He is an extreme mountain biker so everyone is presuming he fell but that is incorrect," Gordon said.

"He was out riding with some of his frame sponsors YT and I think they were going to do some filming and take some photos with him."

Goes to show you never know when your time will end.. Live every day to the fullest and never waste a chance to learn, love, explore, and be happy.

This memorial deserves more comments than any Pinkbike post before. Keep 'em coming!

Rest In Peace, Kelly. This man lived a life to be proud of, and put smiles on the faces of countless people. I always looked forward to seeing McGarry's runs... truly the "most stoked guy" in the sport. It truly is a very, very sad day.
  • 2 0
You have to be kidding me this is terrible news. Mucho respect for a real life super hero. The only solace in this tragic event is knowing Mr. Mcgarry had an incredible life and reached levels of athletic acheivement most mortal could not comprehend. R.I.P.

A flame went out today but it’s one that left a glow in others...RIP
  • 3 2
Wow, i can never find rest when someone young as kelly passes away. Just 33 years and his life is over. Just lets you see how powerless we all are. Some are saying he had a cardiac arrest while climbing a trail(on a bike I assume) in queenstown. Is this true, or does anyone know the exact reason he passed? RIP mate.

I'm really going to miss you Kelly. So many good times on and off the mountain. You were a great friend. You believed in me and muddy tyre when no one else did. I'll cherish all the times we had in Queenstown and Canada - driving around blasting old punk, watching the groms huck it at Wynyard, laughing at videos of Trump, heading up the South Island with Sam to watch Fleetwood Mac, beers down at Atlas, breaking forks at Gorge Road, getting lost in Vancouver trying to find a steak house, building bikes in your backyard, cruising in the battle van, talking about life after biking....dammit dude you're making me cry. You left us too soon. RIP
  • 76 1
It seems that you lost a good friend buddy, while the rest of us lost a good character! Kelly you will be missed!
  • 433 1
Kelly really had the biggest heart, he never let his fame and status in the mountain bike world get to his head. In November 2015 we were riding in Queenstown at Wynyard - a 12 year old German girl was riding through the park trying some jumps and slipped off the trail on some loose gravel. She was all banged up, bleeding, concussion, etc...Kelly picked her up, carried her out of the park, then drove her to the hospital and waited in the emergency room with her until her parents arrived. Absolute class act.
  • 76 1
Must be an honor to have known such a legend. He is the essence of the sport. He rode because it was fun. His POV video of his run at Rampage when he flipped the gap is my favorite of all time. Not because of the flip. It's because if you listen at the top you can hear him humming to music, saying hello to people he's riding past, and just flat out enjoying his run because he loved riding and not because he was worried about how he would place. What a legend. The good always go to soon! I'm sorry for your loss brother. May we all see how McGazza lived and strive to be like him. The world is a better place having known him.

I have been working as a volunteer at Crankworx Rotorua last year and I had thr chance to meet Kelly McGarry...He was such a friendly, positive guy and I had so much respect for him! He even came to the volunteers dinner just to say thank you... It' s sad that the best human have to die first but at least it happenend while he was doing what he loves!! RIP and thank you!

"It' s sad that the best human have to die first but at least it happenend while he was doing what he loves!!"

@TheMomentOfLife it's probably to remind us to think about our own lives and what we are doing with it. I won't pretend to know Kelly McGarry because I don't really follow his type of riding, but the things people say about him make me wish I did. Big guy, big hucks, big heart--I'd like to live like that Smile
  • 2 0
@uphill-blues Yeah probably we should think about our own lifes more often! Even though I am preparing my exams at the moment I am still trying to find free time to do what I love most!
I am pretty sure I will go out and ride a few times not only for Kelly but as well for myself!

R I P Kelly, by no means were we best friends, but I had the pleasure of riding with you back in 2008/9 in Queenstown, with Justin Leov. It was the day after I won my first national at Coronet Peak, and me and Justin wanted to ride Big Dream, and you were the one to let us follow you in! Thanks Kelly, Ride In Peace mate!
Condolences,

Thank you YT! And thank you Kelly! You inspired me to ride lines a mere 16th of what you did. You inspired so many riders by not only your mad-skill but your marvelous character. I just caught your preview ride of Rampage a couple weeks ago - can't believe you're gone. You will be missed for a long, long time. RIP Kelly!
  • 3 0
Beautifully succinct, and perfectly appropriate by YT. Such devastating news, my thoughts are with all those close to him. R.I.P big fella.
  • 102 0
This really sucks. I will never forget the day I was at the Wu-Tang Clan concert with my dad and I met him. His girlfriend (who was a little drunk) wrapped her arm around me and started mumbling something about my redbull rampage hat and how she knew someone I needed to meet. I didn't pay much attention to her since I really didn't understand what she was saying and I thought she was just drunk, but she runs off and pulls Kelly McGarry out from the crowd. We all talked for a moment, he was really happy to talk with us and even took a picture with me (though my dad whitewashed the picture thanks to the flash). He hung out there for another moment while we were all listening before we all said our goodbyes and he made his way elsewhere. It's hard to believe that this guy who is still larger than life in my mind has died, and I hope that his family and girlfriend are doing okay.
  • 32 0
Dude, that is an awesome story! Thanks for sharing. McGazza is an undisputed peoples' champion.
  • 4 0
That is a very awesome story. It's great to hear the pros stories of him, but to hear this, outside of biking altogether, it really speaks to his character. The mere fact that his girlfriend knows that he wants to bring joy to others and brings him over speaks volumes.
  • 76 0
From now on, the Canyon Gap should be named the McGazza Gap.
  • 8 0
That would be really fair! He was the first one to flip it. Good idea!!
  • 65 0
Ride in Peace McGazza, Condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.
  • 53 0
It is a weird feeling definitely. He is not my personal friend, not from my family, I never saw him except on videos. And yet it feels like I lost a very close friend. I think it was his way, always laughing on interviews, always with a good mood, having fun everytime the camera was on him or someone was interviewing him. So... that's what I am going to remember from him.

He looked like a very cool person and I am absolutely sure, he truly was!!!

Can't believe.... heavy and dark feeling in my head right now... don't know how to express with words.

So sad!!!!

RIP dude.... you wrote your name in MTB history for sure!!!

*sigh*

I feel the same too. It was one of his videos that got me riding my Walmart bike in the garden. Thanks for everything Kelly! Smile

True Story: Finished an epic day at Squamish and was just hanging out waiting for my friends when this big Kiwi dude starts talking with me. He is the most friendly dude ever and we start talking about all kinds of stuff, he even recognizes where I'm from (small town in Northern Ontario). He offers me a beer and we talk some more, not until our second beer do I figure out who he is; Kelly Mcgarry. After a great end to the day him and his crew are heading out and he is even concerned that my buds aren't around yet but it's all good and they roll out. Next day I'm at the lift at Whiss and I hear someone call my name its the same big Kiwi dude asking if I made out ok the night before. Kelly was one of the nicest guys I ever met inside or outside of riding no question. This was all before the Canyon Gap Flip and other big moments from Mcgazza and I always wish I could have seen him again and congratulated him on all that he accomplished. Would have loved to have a couple more beers with him, this time on me. Very choked to see such an amazing dude pass, a true loss to the world not just the riding community. My most sincerest condolences to his close friends and family.

Ride on you magnificent fellow.

I had the opportunity to meet and ride with Kelly last December in Queenstown. His down to earth and chilled out nature made him a extremely friendly and all-round cool guy not to mention his raw talent on the bike was out of this world! The mountain bike community will definitely be worse off without him. RIP Kelly.
  • 29 1
When I was 12 years old I messaged him on facebook saying how much i looked up to him and how much he inspired me. I didnt expect a response but later that day he came back to me with such a friendly message. I was so happy that he responded. I always watched his videos in hopes of meeting him in person but maybe in the next life. RIP man you were an inspiration to us all.
  • 30 2
You watch it. You talk about it. Then when it actually happens you go man... I can't believe that happened. But in reality... you can. These guys walk the edge on a regular basis. We praise them for it. They get paid for it. But not often enough are the respected for how long they can go without crossing it. You started seeing big shades of it at Rampage this year. Guys going... nope. It's just not worth it. Then you see something like this and you want to say... it was all worth it. To live the kind of life he lived and do what he's done. The fun he's had. The smiles and adventures. The friends he's made. You want to say it was worth it. But right now... his family and friends... it wasn't worth it. RIP Buddy. I hope you've got nothing but raw dirt to create endless lines with up there. I hope you've got a great view to watch your friends progress. Your family live their lives. Etc. I hope you can sit down at the table next to guys like Craig Kelly, Jay Moriarity, Graham Hunt, McConkey and the like.... sit down... share stories. Laugh. 33 years isn't enough time.
  • 8 0
Still just tripping out. And from what I understand it wasn't a crash that got him. Just crazy. Blown away. Truly in a WTF state of mind. Really bummed for everyone around him that knew and loved him.
  • 2 0
This is so true and as much as I recognize every name on that list, there's many more we could add. Just wouldn't have thought McGazza's name would come up so soon. Definitely not enough time. Sad day...
  • 2 0
While this is true and touching, what killed him wasn't really a crash, he had an heart attack while riding Frown
  • 2 0
Apparently you didn't read my follow up post... @FranckR.

It's the same situation... same result. Family and friends are left without someone they charished. Very hard to deal with the loss of anyone but especially someone full of life and in the prime of their life. So much ahead of them.

For reference... Jay wasn't killed while surfing... what he was known for... he was pleasure diving. Craig wasn't killed because he fell off of a cliff... he was buried by an avalanche set off above him by another group... he wasn't even riding at the time.

But they were both lost doing the activity that they did that put them at risk... as was Kelly.

The fact that it was a natural medical event leaves you feeling even more at awe. Especially with a guy like Kelly. Dude was like the terminator. After walking away and often laughing at some of the biggest crashes ever we all saw him as invincible. And to go out just riding along... damn.

Any way you look at it... it sucks. I feel really bad for everyone around him.
  • 1 0
Yes, I'm not contesting what you said at all, I was just bringing some more informations because many people tought he died from a crash at the time I wrote this. That's just that.
  • 26 0
I remember seeing McGarry years ago in Whistler before I knew who he was. He'd just done the most gnarly thing i'd ever seen in person. I was like who is this cro-magnon giant!? This dude is awesome.

There was a kind of rock star quality to him. But instead of acting cool or tough, he was all smiles and laughter. His positive vibe was infecting everyone around. He was quite simply, the kind of person you want to be around.

Freerider Kelly McGarry has died while riding in Queenstown, New Zealand.

It is believed that McGarry collapsed on the Ben Lomond trail at 4pm, local time.

Two paramedics were flown to the trail by helicopter but McGarry, 33, was found dead on arrival.

 www.odt.co.nz/news/queenstown-lakes/371647/man-dies-while-mountain-biking

A man has died while mountain biking in Queenstown.

Queenstown emergency services were called to the mountain bike crash on the Ben Lomond Track above Queenstown at 4.14pm. Police said the call was to a report of a male having fallen from his bike and requiring urgent medical assistance.
  • 6 0
According to one of our local newspapers: "The 33-year-old, from Nelson, was biking on the Fernhill Loop Track when he suffered from a cardiac arrest while riding uphill at 4.14pm."

Its a huge loss. I am still completely stunned by this.

We drove out from CO two years in a row for Rampage. Got to meet him the first year and talk about the set up, bikes, life, beer. A complete class act and so kind. Went back the next year, saw him again and he even remembered us. An absolute king. So genuine. Getting to watch him ride was insane. Ride in Peace Kelly. You're truly going to be missed
  • 28 0
I met him in 2006 in Whistler, a friend of a friend of a friend, passed a few laps with him on the mountain, saw him at a few parties, but he was on a whole other level than me riding wise so thought nothing of it, definitely thought I was just another dude on the hill to him. 6 months past and I was waiting in a lift line to shred some powder in winter and I hear my name called out and I look up and here is Gazza all geared up, snow board in hand. Not only did he remember me, he saw I was alone and asked me to join his crew and shred some pow with him. A class act,an embodiment of all that is great with MTB.

As a proud Kiwi, YT's move to sponsor Kelly helped form my opinion of them and ultimately contributed a small part to me buying the Capra. Kelly wasn't likely to win many events, but he could always win hearts with his incredible attitude, love of life, great work ethic, straight talent, and killer smile. For YT to understand all that and pick him to be an ambassador for their brand made me happy. RIP McGazza. If I'm feeling sad about your loss then all my thoughts and love go to your family and friends who will feeling it so much worse.

OMfG. Never thought the death of a professional mtb'er could hit me so hard. Damn Kelly was awesome. He was pretty much everything I ever want to be as a rider. His death (and Erik Roner's) proved me how much I can care about theses people I've never even met. You'll be missed for sure Kelly. R.I.P.

Kelly was an inspiration to many, and was viewed as a mentor and role model to many up-and-coming riders. His spirit of domination and ever-cheerful attitude won the hearts of everyone he met. Kelly - you will be sorely missed. Flowing trails and smooth transitions to you, may you rest in peace knowing that the mark you left on this earth will not soon be forgotten.

Came home, turned on computer, open Pinkbike, read "In Memoriam Kelly McGarry".....heart sinks with disbelief...
A sad sad day, my thoughts go to his close friends and family.
But know this, only a true legend flips the canyon, a true pioneer of the sport and every pic and video I ever saw of Kelly he was smiling like he loved life.
Missed never forgotten!
An inspiration, RIP
Now let's ride...

Just last night I was tripping on his videos. Watched every single one of them. And today morning... I feel so lost. Rest in Peace Big man.

This man was a true inspiration. The first thing I can think about Kelly is his smile: every picture, every video footage with the big guy was filled with the feeling a real joy to be here, riding his bike for a passion and for a living. A big smile under a helmet.
Kelly, you were a great rider, an absolute pinner, undoubtly a pride for your amazing country, and you'll forever be missed.
Shred in peace dude.

What an amazing outpouring of love for this guy, has brought tears to my eyes. Was devastated when I saw it this morning, and been sad all day since. So sad to lose such a lovely chap. Thoughts are with his close ones. We should all go out and smash a few berms, and clear a few gaps in his honour.

I feel like you cannot asses the enormity of someones life until it has ended, because there is always more potential. It's incredibly sad to see a living idol leave us, and though to soon, his legacy is enormous. They are going to have to dig a second grave if they are gonna put a man with that big of balls in the ground.

A few years ago I met Kelly at the Chicago airport. He was headed to the Colorado Free ride Festival. He was one of the nicest people I have ever met. He made time to talk with me and was incredibly friendly. Mcgarry is a big reason I love mountain biking, His enthusiasm and skill was what made mountain biking infectious for all those who saw him ride. Mcgarry always was able to make someone happy weather that be from his crazy back flips and skill or from his constant good mood. The mountain bike community and the world have experienced a great loss today. Ride in Peace Kelly you will be missed by all.
  • 3 0
I talked to Kelly after his huge crash in Rampage, what a great guy. He was coming down the mountain with his taco wheeled bike and I asked if he was okay. He stood there for second with such a great attitude to tell me he was good. The guy was full of life and always had a smile on his face. Rampage will never be the same, you'll truly be missed.

I was having a good day until I read this. I was fighting back tears and I never even met him. My thoughts are with his family and friends. A huge loos to MTB. Ride In Peace McGazza

If I were yt industries, I'd make a signature mcgazza tues frame in his honor for the rest of the company's life. No better way to show tribute to one of the greatest people to ever ride a bike.

Sad news. Hope they do something to remember him by at crankworx rotorua. Especially the contributions he made to it last year let alone the mtb industry as a whole. Through kelly the mtb community has gained so much. What a genuine champ.
  • 6 0
This is the saddest news I've heard in a long while. My thoughts are with his friends and family. RIP In Peace.
  • 3 0
RIP Kelly you always were and always will be one of my favorite riders. Your excerpt in the crankworx interviews inspired me to stay in school. Your segment showed me it's possible to go from learning a trade to professional biker thank you for that. You'll always be a hero to me.
  • 4 0
Impossible, refused to believe... I was just waiting for this note here on pinkbike to realize that we missed our legend!!! Frown RIDE IN PEACE McGazza!!! The whole world of MTB is missing you.
  • 3 0
Such a damn shame one of world's best freeriders and one of my favorites to watch. His 2013 72ft backflip was one of the most ballsy moves in history and after his horrible crashes at the 2014 rampage you would have had to think he was indestructible as he walked away from both. Cardiac arrest for someone so physically fit and only in his 30's shows you it can get anyone Frown . So sad, thoughts are with his family.
What the hell is wrong with this year? So many influential people dying Frown
Ride in peace bro Frown

Hearing of Kelly's passing has truly saddened me. I met him with my children once at Crankworx in Whistler a few years ago. He was like a friendly gentle giant that spoke with my kids rather than just saying "hi" and moving on. A true gentleman and fun loving soul that will be missed.

My condolences to his family. I hope they can find some comfort in reading all the kind words and stories about Kelly.
  • 6 0
Would love to see a bike from YT named the McGazza. Would be an amazing tribute.
  • 3 0
For me it's both heartbreaking and heartening to come to a place like Pinkbike to pay respects to such a unique talent, and see so many share in their grief and shock. I was describing Kelly to my non biking wife and the first thing I described about him was how he was the embodiment of a somewhat 'cliched' biker dude- a cliche that exists for a reason- because he's the guy, I'm willing to bet, we would ALL like to be. Someone there with the biggest smile and stoke for riding. I never had the pleasure of meeting him or seeing him compete but it's a true mark of the man that so many thousands around the world, in many cultures choose to remember his personality that resonated so strongly with us as mountain bikers. Forget results, that is a hell of a legacy and something we should all aspire to. RIP Kelly and my thoughts are with those who knew him personally and who are grieving today.
  • 3 0
I was also one of the lucky ones who got to meet Kerry, back a few years ago in Norway at Hafjell during the Anti days of thunder filming. Super chilled out guy, the epitome of a Kiwi - super friendly, laid back and a great ambassador for his country and for the sport. Shred in peace budddy!
  • 3 0
Seeing this was like reading that a superhero had died. Aren't they supposed to be immortal? Even though you know it's the truth it somehow messes with your perception of reality when someone truly godlike in the eyes of so many, young and old, realizes their mortality. After all, Kelly hurtled his bike off of cliffs with a grin on his face- how could it be possible he is just like the rest of us, who live and die? Realizing these guys are humans, not gods, this morning really put me down, and I never even met McGazza. I can't even imagine what those close to him are feeling today. This man left an incredible mark on the mountain bike sport and community, and his legacy will not be forgotten. Shred in peace Kelly.

Today I awoke to the news of Kellys Death. I didn't know him personally but I felt as if I did through the eyes of his happiness and spirit. Life is weird how we see someone we look up to die so suddenly. But I don't think Kelly would want us to mourn, as much as he would want us to go for a ride in his remembrance. Push our limits as he did every time he was given an opportunity. All I can say is thank you to him. From what I can understand you were not only a great rider but a great man. Your death has been taken by myself very hard, not seeing you at rampage and other events will be so undeniably weird, though I think you would like me and the rest who are feeling grief, not to. Instead ride with are remembrance of you, and know you may be gone but you are still engraved in the dirt we ride everyday. Remember that you are shredding somewhere else now. I'm sad that it had to come this way and so soon, but I know you would want the best for myself and everyone else. You touched everyone Kelly, and you have left your Mark on me. 'Thank You' and I am going to push myself harder than ever before in your remembrance. We will all miss you Kelly. Thank You Will Jacobson, one of the many you inspired

Sad. My son and I met him at a Wu-Tang Clan concert in Salt Lake City. We were just chill'n and one of his friends grabbed my son -who was wearing a rampage hat from 2013 when he flipped the canyon gap -and introduced him. Made our night. I hear so much of what an awesome person he is. Just thought I would share our experience.

Of the 199 years that the bicycle has been rolling on this planet, we are all lucky to have had the chance to ride, crash, flip, shred, and smile at the same time as Kelly McGarry. An inspirational rider that was always fun to watch. You were among the best of the best. R.I.P. And prayers to all your family and friends.

So sad, a legend taken far too long before his time. I always remember him busting that sick backflip over the canyon gap for the first time, made the whole world sit up and take notice! Condolences to all family and friends from the whole MTB community
  • 2 0
Just terrible to hear. Thoughts go out to his family and what I'm sure are many, many friends. Kelly seemed to be a personality that transcended MTB genres and even the cycling community--I'd bet thousands of people who don't even own a bike would recognize him and his riding. What a loss on so many levels... Ride in peace, Kelly.

mountainbiking changed my life in so many aspects. Kelly took a big part of that for being a super badass, but also for being one of the nicest and funniest guys in the scene. So from one large men to another : Thank you for all the good memories and motivation that you have given to me ! RIP

I logged on to PB this morning to check out the POD and today's content, then got floored by the headline! I felt the blood leave my face as I came to the realization that one of my favorite riders is no longer with us.  It was great meeting you last summer. Getting to do a few laps with you at Winter Park and Whistler last year made my whole summer. Thanks for everything you did in this sport, for all your inspiration, and love. Cheers, you will be missed.
  • 2 0
I bumped into him at Auckland airport last year. Went to say hello and only realized after starting the introduction that he had headphones hiding under all the hair. Right away I felt bad because I had probably interrupted his quiet chill moment while waiting for his plane... But he didn't care, he popped the ear buds out right away and stopped to have a chat with me about how he was too tall to be a Hobbit. And Rotorua course prep. And jumping 100 feet to flat. Etc. Nice guy. I am sad. Less typing, more biking! Indeed Being the same age as him I think I'll try and do some more biking this year. Hopefully his memory will still inspire people for years to come.
  • 2 0
At the 2009 crankwork in Whistler there was a red platform step on step off. My brother gets on the chairlift late in the afternoon with the course closed. And there goes a long haired kiwi sliding under the tape and cranking like a mad men to try to clear the entire step on step off in one! Ends up landing short on luckily a rounded landing. That would have taken anyone out of the contest but there he was later in the week on his bike manualing that same step on step off.

So so sad to hear of Kelly's passing. It is really upsetting, not because I ever met him, but because of what a kind fellow he came across as, both in the media and from friends that had met him.
What a great ambassador for the mtb community he was. Thoughts go out to his family, friends and dog (always a focus of his Instagram posts).
Rest in Pease Kelly.

It's been a sad day today, since hearing the news. R.I.P. Kelly, you have been an inspiration to watch and will continue to be as I rewatch your videos! I'm glad I had the chance to meet you and talk with you at the Crankworx Whistler Whip off this past summer, was a great experience. A very talented rider, GoPro athlete and all around great guy! A terrible loss for the community.

Heart broken. Such a great person and role model that will be missed greatly. Had the opportunity to meet him at the Canyons bike park once and will never forget his incredible positive energy and willingness to share the experience. Watching him backflip the canyon gap at Rampage was one of the greatest things I have ever scene in person. Won't forget that one, such a legend. We will miss you Kelly. Ride On!

After what he survived and accomplished, this is so hard to believe, just riding a trail. I never met him but his personality came through in the media. I feel for those that were close to him, it's tough to loose somebody like that from your life. Those gentle giant positive grinning people that do crazy shit like flip bikes over 70" gaps. Ride in peace Kelly
  • 1 0
I've never met him, but I can tell from any social media that he just looks like a happy, positive nice guy. Even from just looking at his face and his constant smile, you can tell that he is someone who is fun to have around, someone you want to be friends with. Breaks my heart to hear this news and I don't even know much about him. Rest in paradise
  • 1 0
Wow this is unexpected! So sad! I met Kelly in 2009 in Whistler in his appartment, a friend of mine was staying with him. A few years later at a race here in Switzerland he came to me asking me how I was doing. I was quite impressed that someone like him just came over to talk to someone like me. Rest in Peace Kelly.

I'm so Sad, to hear about losing a Great Legend, one of the masters, he was one of the persons that I would like to know in person. Your legacy, achievements and charisma will be remember forever. My most sincere condolences to his family friends and girlfriend. What a great guy. RIP Macgazza
  • 1 0
Of all of the deaths we have all been hearing about this year, this is by far the saddest one. We were there for that 2013 canyon gap backy and I remember losing my mind with all my friends around me. I grew my hair about because of Mcgazza and if I could be like any rider in the freerider scene today it would definitely be him. This we a very very sad thing to wake up to. We all are feelin for you and your family
  • 1 0
This is truly saddening news. I've only watched Kelly ride online and in films like so many others, but it was always obvious what amazing talent, personality and energy he has brought to mtbing. My condolences to his family and loved ones. Very sorry for such a tragic loss.

Met Kelly at the Claymore Challenge at Highland in 2011-what a maniac & a nice guy. He was staying in the same hotel down the hill as my family & I; there was a lot of late night noise in that place. We will always remember his sneakers laying in the hallway by our door when we left the room the next morning. Ride On!

Got the chance to ride behind this guy by accident this summer at trestle unmistakeable main flowing from his helmet... Super nice guy definitely a huge loss for mountain biking RIP big guy thoughts with you family today
  • 2 0
Shit news! RIP. These hero's of the sport especially at Kelly's level of riding seem invincible. Tragically their just human. Not sure what happened and he was way too young. Sad day.

How to make monday worse #101
  • 5 0
 Just awful Frown

My thoughts are with his loved ones
  • 1 0
I am beyond belief, saw the initial report of the accident and then snippets of news with Kelly's name attached. I was hoping it was not true and had been misreported somehow. Now it has been confirmed I am struggling to come to terms with it. Living in Queenstown and being able to ride with McGazza was a real privilege. Kelly was one of MTB's all time GC's. MTB has lost one of the greats. Ride In Peace Kelly. Arohanui
  • 1 0
RIP, and sincere condolences to all Kelly's family and friends. I'm not a free rider and don't follow that aspect of the sport too closely, but he was one of the riders who managed to make a real impact on me. A big star and a big loss to all of MTB Frown
  • 1 0
I don't know what to say... This is such a loss to the MTB community and everybody he knew. Watching him drop into Rampage and Joyride with his hair waving behind him and a huge smile on his face was always one of the highlights of mine and so many other people's years. He's been an inspiration not just to mountain bikers, but to people in general on and off the bike. My condolences to his friends and family Ride in Peace Kelly
  • 1 0
this is uffking terrible. i hope we all can carry on his attitude and spirit. you know, that smile and genuine goodness he'd welcome you with, even if you were just a fan at crankworx and ran into him in the village? yeah, we could all be much better people if we all talked and treated each other as he did to total strangers. cheers dude. i will try to be a lil more mcgazza from now on
  • 4 0
Lost for words. A hero. Rest in peace brother! When I get home from work tonight i'll be riding for you.
  • 1 0
Rip Kelly, I can't say I followed freeride much buy when I did you always made me smile, forever will you be riding those trails, roosting that dirt in the kiwi sun and flip flying like a bird. The world remembers you. Heaven is a half pipe. Peace!
  • 1 0
It's this wierd feeling when you can't really know what to feel because you never knew the person but just from watching his videos and his pictures, you can see in his eyes he was one hell of a great dude and a real inspiration in life! Ride in peace dude!
  • 1 0
The first time I had heard of Kelly and seen him ride was his infamous rampage GOPRO footage. I remember hearing him hum along to what sounded like some good ol metal music. I was like f*ck yes I like this guy. Been actually following his progress and always rooting for him the past few since that rampage video came out. I feel as if my next ride should be with headphones and some metal..... I will dedicate my next ride to him. Wonder what kind metal he liked???
  • 2 0
These words are to the friends and the family. The sorrow is deep, but remember that Kelly had really inspired so many people. This life was worth living and his shine will be on all of us forever. Rest in peace, man!
  • 2 1
Tears have come to my eyes as i've read the news today... I don't even know what to say. Certainly the kindest mountain biker to have ever lived on this planet... WHY?? In what f*cked up world are we living in? I'm devastated, Mcgazza will leave a whole in our MTB family as big as his heart and soul... Ride in peace&heaven #RIPGentleGiant
  • 1 0
Everything about today sucks. I show people McGarrys backflip almost every week when I'm talking about insane riding. He's a true legend. It was such a shock this morning when my friend told me the news. I wish it wasn't true. Ride In Peace, McGarry.
  • 1 0
I feel like many others on here in that I never met him but damn if he didn't seem like a real solid dude, always super positive. As sad as it is to read there are tons of rad stories about him on here today. Thanks, for those.
  • 1 0
we have just finished a night ride and around the camp fire it was obvious the influence you have had on all 8 of us that were there. You were a good bugger and an exceptional rider and you and your smile will be greatly missed. RIP big fella
  • 1 0
Very Sad news to lose another great sportsman and someone who really pushed the sport on so many levels. Thoughts to family friends and all that knew Kelly. Our Tuesday night pedal will have to be marked with a moment and then to the local to raise a pint to his memory. Pedal in Peace
  • 1 0
Kelly man, in my mind you were supposed to riding forever, inspiring as a biker and as a person for decades to come. Like Wade Simmons, a guy who seemingly will be around forever. You may be tall, you also had the widest grin in professional mountainbiking. Worth just as much as the amazing moves you were pulling. I would have loved to have seen more of that. You already gave us so much, you'll continue to be an inspiration. Thank you for what you brought to mountainbiking. Sad to know you're gone now.
  • 1 0
Almost 1000 comments shows how popular McGazza was and how much he'll be missed by the MTB community. Makes me wonder what kind of hole he has left at home with his nearest and dearest. Such a sad moment in history but he has inspired me, some random bloke from the other side of the planet, to live life to the fullest. He will live on in the hearts and minds of many people all over the world. Rest in Peace brother.
  • 2 1
Many of us never got the chance to meet Kelly McGarry, but I still feel a great sadness when I think that another amazing public figure and role model in mountain biking has left this world. Its truly saddening and makes my heart heavy to think he will no longer be able to shred hard on this earth. Although as so many people have said I am sure he is shredding hard wherever he may be now.

His death has also been a stark reminder that this life is so fleeting, so temporary that we must all make our best effort to live life to its fullest each and every day. I never got the chance to meet Kelly, but as so many people have said it sounds like he was truly an amazing person. If one lesson can be learned from that it is you should always try your best to make the most meaningful, good impact on others lives that you can and that you leave the world a better place knowing you have made a difference.

Its hard to explain but even though I never had the honour of meeting Kelly I still feel so terribly sad that another ambassador of awesome has left this world too early by anyone's standards.

We all have to ride on, but must never forget those who strive to bring more greatness to this world (and the MTB community).

Ride in Peace Kelly McGarry, your loss has created a chasm in this community that I dont think anyone will ever be able to fill. Nor should they, as I truly believe you have left a unique impact on us all that could never be forgotten even if it comes from a perspective of only meeting you through the lens of a camera.

Such a sweet guy. My wife was racing XC at Winter Park—the weekend of the free ride festival—and had a great conversation with him, not knowing his involvement with the event, or who he was until much later. Pretty bummed here. Can't imagine how the people close to him must feel.
  • 1 0
Had the honor of working with Kelly when he was a sponsored rider with TH Industries (FSA-Gravity-Vision-Metropolis).
At trade shows he was the epitome of a professional rider - approachable, considerate and always included whoever he was conversing with in the point of any conversation. Celebrated life and made sure others were part of the fun.
Turning off the damn laptop and grabbing my trail rig to go "Kelly It Out" on some trails!
Kelly, you lived your life well my friend.

Sad news. Not a member of pinkbike long(only posted 1 other comment). But what a great community to be a part of. To everyone who posted positive comments and Kelly's friends and family condolences, and may he be remembered in the most positive way possible!

Met this behemoth of a man at Crankworx last year at Whistler as he ducked underneath the YT tent. A true gentleman, kind and warm-hearted. Were all going to miss you RIP. Do this man some justice and slay some dirt.
  • 1 0
Met him in Whistler last Summer while he scrounged around for some DH tubes for his ride. Stopped long enough for a quick chat and a hand shake with me. Kelly was all aces. Rest in peace.

He gave us some amazing memories.

Ride in style McGazza

Met the guy a couple of times at tradeshows and events. Always got a laugh being the two tall guys around the typically shorter riders. What an amazing energy he put off. This just sucks.
  • 1 0
What a huge lost to the mountain bike community. Our family had the opportunity to meet Kelly M. a few times in NZ and he always took the time to talk to our boys and get them stoked about riding. He was their hero.
  • 1 0
I wasn't having a bad day for a Monday, but now it's not so good that's just heartbreaking. One of our worlds most influential, inspiring and ground breaking individuals. We will miss you like you will never know
  • 1 0
I met him riding the local trails in Rossland BC and instantly knew who he was. He was the most down to earth guy, all smiles, rode with all of the guys there for an hour or so. What a loss..

Rest in peace man. A dude with such a positive attitude like yourself is always an inspiration regardless of what he's done on two wheels. That was all just extra inspirational icing on the cake.

Such a sad day in the biking world...he was one of the greats and one of my idols. My heart goes out to his family and friends. So young......at least he died doing what he loved. Ride on in Valhalla brother!

Didn't know the guy personally but after watching countless videos of him doing what he loves, one can't help but feel he's a kindred spirit. My condolences to the family, we feel your loss. Rest in peace, Kelly.

We're all saddened by Kelly's passing. Those closest to him must be deeply pained. It's hard to process... 33 year old pro athlete dies of heart attack? Perhaps in the coming days more details will emerge to help us understand. Now, we must all fill the void that was left with our collective fun-loving, good-natured awesomeness--

I used to watch crankworx TV episodes on the NWD Extras DVD's and ill never forget seeing a short interview with Kelly. He said "broken bones heal and chicks dig scars", Bad ass dude. RIP

This is terrible news! I can't believe he's gone! Rest in peace Kelly! You'll be deeply missed Frown

Does anyone know how his passing happened?
  • 1 0
Vital is quoting first responders as saying it was a medical event. I am by no means an expert and don't quote me on this, but I think the term medical event usually refers to something not trauma-related. At least in my experience here in the states that's usually what they mean when they say something like that.
  • 2 0
No way....very bummed. I will never forget his smashed Diamondback at Rampage....then him nailing that gap with a back flip no less.
  • 3 0
Sad, sad news. Rest in peace Big Man, thoughts to all his friends and family.

 He seemed like such a class act. These lyrics seemed appropriate to me;
"A song for a heart so big, God wouldn't let it live... May angels lead you in, Hear you me my friends,
On sleepless roads, the sleepless go, May angels lead you in..." (Lyrics to "Hear You Me" by Jimmy Eat World)
Wherever you are, keep riding and smiling brother!

i thought this guy was undead ;( but shit happens !!
  • 3 0
Apparently he had a heart attack while pedaling uphill on the trail. Sounds like he may have had an un-detected heart defect.
From Stuff.co.nz "The 33-year-old, from Nelson, was biking on the Fernhill Loop Track when he suffered from a cardiac arrest while riding uphill at 4.14pm.
  • 2 2
@SteveDekker hey man I'm not hating here but you've confused heart attack with cardiac arrest. The cause of his CA could have been a heart attack, along with about a million other things. This whole thing sucks big time, the details may help us all come to terms with this eventually, but for now we'll just have to wait.
  • 1 0
 @Funkybunch Totally agree with you

"We understand he was riding uphill and suffered cardiac arrest. He is an extreme mountain biker so everyone is presuming he fell but that is incorrect,"

 What happened
  • 3 2
there's a link towards the top of the thread to an article
  • 4 1
 Apparently heart failure
  • 1 0
I hope they are checking for spider bites...as well. Maybe it was a spider bite + climbing uphill?
  • 1 0
I dunno, maybe he drank too many Redbulls or coffee that day or some other stimulant? Or maybe it was a spider bite...? I clicked on that link you sent and under Redback spiders it stated "...and increased heart rate and blood pressure can result." Just saying that maybe something increased his heart rate and combined with climbing on his bike it was too much?
  • 2 1
Redbacks are in Australia only, not found in other countries. He wasn't riding in Australia, and I highly doubt his increased HR would have been from a spider bite. He would have felt tired, lack of energy and other symptoms from a spider bite. Remember, he was very tall, and this means his heart would have required to work harder to pump blood around his body. Either way, it's devastating and I hope that he didn't go through any pain before his body went into shock and he passed away RIP
