Fox Wants to Upgrade Your Float 34 Fork With Its New Air-Spring Kit

by Richard Cunningham

Float 34 air spring upgrade kit
Pinkbike is currently testing Fox's new air spring conversion, so keep an eye out for the review.

Some of the performance gains that were attained when Fox Racing Shox released its latest version of the Float 36 fork were due to its new air spring design, which incorporates an air-type negative spring instead of the previous coil version. The new air-negative spring system resulted in a seamless transition from the fork's beginning stroke through the mid-stroke and those improvements were dramatic enough to inspire Fox to design a retrofit air-spring kit for current Float 34 fork owners. Fox officials say that the offer is an effort to offer backwards compatibility to key suspension products so that customers can economically upgrade to new technology instead of shouldering the cost of a new product purchase.

What's in the Kit

The kit replaces the entire spring assembly and includes snap-on volume spacers for bottom-out and spring-rate adjustments. A number of holes in the new spring shaft allow users to fine tune the Float 34's travel in ten-millimeter increments and, like the Float 36, the negative spring is self-equalizing. For $99 USD, Fox will install the air-spring kit in any Float 34 fork from model year 2012 through 2015, although the owners are required to pay shipping charges. The 99-dollar deal is limited to USA customers at present, although OGC, Fox's distributor in Canada, is expected to participate with similar pricing. Fox encourages Float 34 fork owners elsewhere to contact their distributors to get pricing for the service in their specific countries at this address. North American customers should contact Fox directly.

Visible in this transparent Float 36 model, the kit replaces the coil negative spring with a lighter weight air spring.

The Official Press Release Says:

Using the same Float air-spring technology used in the award-winning 36 fork, Fox is now offering upgrade kits to retrofit 2012-2015 34 forks. The kit replaces the entire air spring assembly, reducing weight and noise while greatly increasing adjustability and performance. Like the current 36 fork design, the 34 Float Air Spring Upgrade Kit features a positive and negative air spring system, which reduces the force to initiate travel, providing excellent sensitivity and small bump compliance at all pressure settings. The design also allows for internal travel adjustments in 10mm increments and the air spring curve can be tuned using volume spacers.

The 34 FLOAT Air Spring Upgrade Kits are available for Float and TALAS 26"/27.5" forks at 140mm, 150mm, and 160mm of travel and for Float and TALAS 29" forks at 120mm, 130mm, 140mm, and 150mm. This limited time special is available in the United States only and will be honored through August 31, 2016. After that, the kits will retail for $139.00 plus $40.00 for installation. To get your 34 fork upgrade started, begin the process by getting a Return Authorization (RA) number issued by Fox.

Having owned and ridden multiple versions of the old 34 and the new 36, if you have an old 34 do it! Way, way, way better.

Did it say lets go rip off Rockshox stuff that works great and tell riders they want to spend $$$$ on it. We will call it innovation when it's rely a rip off.

Make your junk right the first time. Don't make riders pay to fix what is not worth fixing in the first place.

So is this just the spring, will my damper still blow, and will my fork still feel like ass? Serious question
  • 4 1
@FlowMasterO: If you want a non-ass-feeling damper, look into the Vorsprung TLA damper (vorsprungsuspension.com/pages/tla-compression-system-fox-34-ctd-upgrade-kit). I recently went with the TLA, and it's a major improvement over the 2014 CTD it replaced.

This is great news. But honestly, I think many of these forks should have been recalled. I had the pleasure of sitting down with a FOX tech as he pulled apart my fork and rebuilt it. Many of the parts were blatantly wrong or faulty. Once he rebuilt it, it worked amazing. I have a Pike on another bike, and after the rebuild it was close to the Pike in performance.

Prior to the rebuild: the lockout didn't work; climb setting didn't work, there was tons of brake dive, and the descend and trail modes felt pretty much the same. I know most of the repair had to do with the CTD side. I'm not sure what he did (if anything) to the spring assembly. But the fork was night and day better. I'll likely buy this kit and see if there is any difference.

But, the main questions is... will I buy a FOX fork in the future? That I don't know.

Silly me, I thought you buy expensive component so you don't have to upgrade or modify.
  • 45 7
@kanasasa: you buy expensive components so that you get the best of what's available at the time. You can't reasonably expect a fork from 4 years ago to still be top of the line, but for $100USD/$16,000CAD you can get your old fork up to speed. Sounds like a much better solution than shelling out $1000 for a whole new fork when everything except the cartridge is nearly identical.
  • 12 8

@WAKIdesigns: It was Fox's best "trail" fork at the time, that didn't make it good, only made it their best. Thankfully Fox has improved a bit since then, which goes back to my point. Things evolve, even the best things evolve, so would it be better to get the latest updates for $100 or $1000?
  • 1 0

  • 32 1
$100 for the internals of the 2016 models? Sounds like a pretty cheap way to improve ride quality compared to buying a new fork!
  • 5 1
Basically it looks more like the new 36 spring than the 34 2016 spring.
34 2016 spring has no rod on the upper assembly and an exchange port is carved on the inner surface of the diver in order to allow pressure equilibration between positive and negative chambers. Much like the Pike.
www.pinkbike.com/photo/12069519
Since there is no exchange of T and divers scheduled with this upgrade, so no exchange port on the diver, I guess that pressure communication between + and - chambers are made through a central port closed by the rod.
So basically it's more pertinent to compare it to the 36 than the new 34.
Now the 99$ question : is the 34 2016 spring better or worse than the 36?
  • 2 0
 @gnralized: Really good point.
Also, I just swapped out my 2012 damper for a 2016 FIT4 damper, and it really didn't make much difference. Small-bump compliance is a little better. But this is certainly tempting, if it will give it something closer to the feel (but not stiffness) of the 36.
  • 1 0

Good that Fox are offering this. The 2014 Float 34 I have has blown goats for the past two seasons and the twice I have asked the distributor about it, I was told its just me (in a snooty ass manner too boot). Too bad I have already shelled out for a Lyrik and have installed a Vivd on the back specifically so I never have to deal with the 2nd rate customer service I have received ever again.

I just got my fork back from Fox and it's waaaay better than it used to be. It's like a totally different fork. I didn't see much weight savings though, maybe a tenth of a pound. But since I don't have to lift it over every twig anymore I don't really care how much it weighs. 1st ride was almost 100% Strava PRs.
  • 7 0
Good to see there offering this instead of having to go with the 36

This is sick. A few places are selling 2015 34 Floats for amazing prices. For under $500, including all shipping, I can basically have a 2016 Fox Float 34.
  • 4 1
Except it's just the spring side of the fork that is upgraded with this kit. The (unloved) 2012-2015 damper is unchanged.
  • 2 0
@MtbSince84: I could see spending ~ $1000 for a 34 chassis, new airspring, & a avalanche cartridge though, which is possible if you can get a 2015 fork for, say $400?
  • 4 0
Judging by all of the negative comments on here, I can only guess older model Fox 34's have stolen a lot of girlfriends, placed flaming bags of poop on doorsteps or ran over puppies. Such a heartless bastard, that Fox 34.
  • 2 0
Sent in my fork for the $99 air spring upgrade. Fox called and offered to replace the damper with a new 2016/2017 for another $99. Asked if they could stretch the 34's 150mm to 160mm and they said no problem. All said and done looks like it will cost about $250 with all the shipping and such. Not bad for an almost new fork with an extra 10mm of suspension. Hopefully it feels awesome.
  • 1 0
Hey did you get your fork back? If so, how is it? I was unable to do the damper upgrade because I am short with money. I am happy and waiting for my $99 air spring updateWink
  • 2 0
I got my '15 34 upgraded to the '16 FIT 4 damp and air spring. The fit 4 will not just drop into the 2015 fork. The thread pitch is different between the fit 4 damp and the 2015 chassis. There is a a custom damp that will put the fit 4 into a '15 34 fork.
  • 1 0
Is the damper upgrade separate from this upgrade FOX is doing for the spring? If so who did it? how much did that throw you back? Just curious, I've heard the 2015 Damper isn't that far behind the FIt 4.
  • 1 0
@Badnewcastle: I got the air spring (pictured above) and the FIT4 on the damper side. 34 Float Air Spring Assy 26-27.5 160mm and 34 FIT4 Cartridge Assy 26-27.5. both done by Fanatik bike in washington state. set me back a few hundred but it was easier than going through finding a buyer for my '15 and shelling out the cash for a '16, IMO.
  • 2 0
This is only $99 if you send it in for them to do the service/replacement. That adds another $175 plus $7.99 for shipping to the cost. If you want the spring and do it yourself, it is $130 plus $11,99 shipping. It costs more to ship the new air spring then to ship your fork. This is a bit more expensive then they want you to believe. I am going to order the spring and do it myself.
  • 1 0
"For $99 USD, Fox will install the air-spring kit in any Float 34 fork from model year 2012 through 2015, although the owners are required to pay shipping charges."
  • 2 0
Don't kid yourself, Fox customer service is decent enough, but their actual service is horrible at the Watsonville home base. My DHXRC4 had to be sent back twice before use, my RP23 AIR shock has seeped oil ever since getting serviced, and my 36 Talas needed to be sent back twice and the 120/160 adjuster sometimes just does nothing.

I'm hoping that FOX will be reading these, and can come up with a solution. Discounts don't cover bad service.
  • 1 0
 Yep.
  • 2 0
Fox sucks, I went round and round with them about how bad the 2014 34 fork was. I rebuilt it, rebuilt it again with gold oil, and then they offered me this new air spring 2 months ago for $134 plus Shipping. I asked for them to give it to me and they said no. I told them they were admitting a problem with a $1000 + product and that trying to "sell" me a fix for it was wrong. Anyway bought a Pike and will never go back to fox. Poor product, poor service, and how much does that new air spring cost them anyway. It will cost them my business.
  • 1 0
Having an old recon from 2012 and being surprised how SRAM said to ship it to them to fix an issue with it for free (including free shipping to and from LBS)...on a bike i bought used and isnt a brand that LBS sells...then seeing how quickly they shipped it back...has me sold on Rockshox.

X-Fusion has awesome service too from what i hear.
  • 1 0
Am I missing something here now...article is saying that this upgraded spring can be travel adjusted in 10mm increments as it has those holes in the air shaft. 2016 models can only be travel-ajusted by replacing the air shaft, right?

Maybe there'll be another upgrade for 2016 forks to buy an air shaft with holes so you could fine tune the travel without trying many different air shafts?
  • 1 0
Answer to my own question...apparently not. Without knowing much of fork structure the port through which pos/neg pressure equalize is located in the spring's upper tube on 2016 models. Fox claims it reduces stiction as they have removed a seal by doing it this way.
  • 23 22
Fox is doing this because they know that those forks sucked balls! In the years they are quoting I bought two bikes that both came with a fox 34. The first one was so bad it almost ruined the bike for me until I wised up and read everywhere that they blow. I put a Pike on as soon as they came out and it was a whole new bike. The second one had a model year newer, was a bit better but still dove like a motherf'er under braking. Since I was selling the other bike I just swapped the forks and viola! totally different bike! I even told the guy who bought the bike that I hated the fork but it was better than the orginal 34 it came with. He knew what he was getting into and had already planned to buy a Pike!

Fck spending $99 on a new spring. Just sell your shit Fox 34 and buy a Pike, if they are both used there will probably only be a $99 difference anyways and you get the added stiffness of a 35mm stantion plus it's lighter, Or get a new Lyrik.
  • 16 3
Alright, I have a question. How are you supposed to sell your 34 when people know it's shit?
  • 10 1
You have to give credit where credit is due though, this is a good move by Fox in the current mountain bike industry.
  • 13 10
hmmm.. $99 to make your fork 10000 times better/ basically the 2016 version, or $1000 for a pike that has no where near the same quality control/tolerances/ tuneability as Fox (not saying the pike is bad... but..)
  • 5 5

@Bronco82- lots of people buy Fox because of the name and refuse to think they could produce something crappy. It's widely known about the issues of the 34 but there's still a market for them.

@leon-forfar- Like I said if you sell a used 34 and buy a used Pike there is a minimal price dif.

Maybe I was a but harsh for some of you but I don't think so, show me a good review of an old 34 and I'll show you a advertisement. Even Pinkbike said they were crap and they will push anything, even a 12 speed cassette. ha!

Every year the reviews come out about Fox finally have fixed the 34 issues and each year the previous year is slammed in the review. It's a total joke, why would they not have done this in the first place? When the 2017 line hits the shelves everybody will say, "For those of you fed up the partial fix fox issued last year you have got to try the new Fox 34. Fox worked it all out blah blah blah"
  • 6 1
The older 34s were definately not great forks. But it is awesome that fox make parts fork forks that old and want people to be able to experience how a new one would perform for next to nothing. When you are comparing the machining quality of a fox compared to any rock shox internally and externally, its crazy some of the things that happen to rock shox shocks and forks just because of tolerances being off. They are making good strides, however, by starting to use SKF seals and little bits inside.
  • 3 2
I agree it's good that they make these things for people that just want a quick fix. I'm just a bike snob.
  • 6 6
@warmerdamj: I buy Rockshox because they don't have the stupid service intervals that fox does. I really don't care what name is on the suspension as long as it works and doesn't turn into a money pit.
  • 5 0
@Bronco82: fox service intervals are the same if not longer and almost all their suspension. Fox 40s go 125 hours of riding before needing an overhaul
  • 1 2
@leon-forfar: I might have read something wrong somewhere. Still, I had a 160mm Domain that I never serviced for all two years I had the bike and it just kept going.(read as I didn't have the money) It was a tank, but it kept going. And, I bought that bike used too. Besides, who wouldn't want to be able to go all black everything?
  • 6 2
@Bronco82: I'd service outers of Domain at least twice a year and change damper oil at least once a year. Same goes to Fox. I'd change oil in open bath Marzoccji at least once a year as well. Any longer intervals are falling into "my junk never failed me then I sold it" category.

To me 34s were crap until Fit4 damper came along. 36 was always the best of the best. But these days Fox prices are so insane that you can buy two top RS forks in the price of one Fox. Even Öhlins fork is cheaper and it is made in Sweden where man hour of work starts at 50€. Fox went nuts. There is no justifying of double price of markets Benchmark and Pike is undoubtedly one.
  • 2 5
I love all the down votes on my comments, just speaks to how right I am, obviously this article is being click attacked by fox fork users who are desperate for an upgrade because like WAKI said they have a fork that they over paid for and are unhappy with. The truth hurts, I know but instead of pumping money into upgrades I cut my losses and jumped to SRAM.

Quit dumping money into your inferior product and put that $99 in a savings account, then every time your fork bottoms out because you touched your brakes going into a corner put another $1. You will be able to afford a Pike or Lyrik in no time!
  • 1 0
Even the new FIT4 damper doesn't feel all that great. I briefly had a 34 CTD and it made me miss my old RLC.
  • 1 0
@warmerdamj: If you have ever taken apart or serviced multiple fox and rock shox fork, you would understand that any Sram fork is no where near the quality that Fox puts out. I'm not saying Fox hasn't made garbage products at some points along the way, but that goes for any brand that is willing to experiment with product. Overall quality control on fox has and will always be more than rock shox, and you pay the price for it. Sram is a marketing company, and have done a great job at making the perceived value of the product on par with Fox.
  • 2 0
@warmerdamj: I'm on my fourth Pike in a year, all on warranty. Air migrating in to lowers every time; different reason for warranty every time, creaking CSU, knocking lowers... It was the only funny thing about not being able to ride, including a couple of days in the Alps.
Long and short, I'd like to jump to Fox. Grass is always greener.

I looked at the Vorsprung but decided that I'd pay the extra and get an SSD damper from Avalanche, money well spent in my view. Either companies products make the improvement was worth the cost. I've ridden the 2015 Pike, I prefer my modified 34
  • 3 0
@Blackers: I went with the Vorsprung because I was already getting the Corset air sleeve. Wasn't aware of the Avalanche at the time. I really like the Vorsprung TLA and *love* the Corset. Plus, their prices are in Canuck bucks which worked in my favor at the time. Glad to hear you like your SSD.

I'd consider this if I didn't have to send my fork to Fox. If I could get this done @ my LBS within a week, I'd be researching this more. I'm not sure I need it and I certainly don't need to be off my bike for an unnamed amount of time to get it done.
  • 3 0
How about you replace the dampers in these forks under a recall instead of trying to siphon more money out of your customers?
  • 1 0
A couple years too late and $99 short! The 2014 model that came stock on my Remedy got about 10 rides on it before it started clunking and diving. Replaced it with a Pike RCT3 and not a hiccup since. The old F34 was rebuilt under warranty by Fox, but with the same old faulty internals.
  • 1 0
Isn't this essentially the same as what Rockshox did for their Boxxer's. So that anyone with (I think) 2008 to 2014 Boxxer could upgrade it so it'd be the same quality as the 2015 forks...
  • 3 0

I just contacted fox and they say the price "special" is for them to do it. I smell a rat. What are they really fixing when you send it in?

Where can I get the 2016 transparent forks? Now I'll know when to change my oil.
  • 5 6
I got a zocchi ncr ti because the forked sucked so bad I don't think that I will ever go back to fox. Kinda bummed that zocchi went out of business.

 They didn't fox bought them

My last zocchi AND fox fork sucked. Other than the 40, I've never had anything good to say about an overpriced fox. Rock Shox is my go to, neverhad a bad one and I've owned SIDs, Rebas, a Boxxer, two Pikes, etc etc.

@foxracingshox . Why US only exclusive prices? Don't you appreciate all your customers and treat them all equally?
  • 3 4
The early 34 were so dangerous . They should have been recalled . so many people lost lots of money and were injured on such a bad product .
