Spotted: Devinci Spartan Carbon

Jul 24, 2014
by Mike Kazimer
As round five of the Enduro World Series gets underway in Winter Park, Colorado, a number of riders have been seen on prototype or pre-production models of bikes that have yet to be announced to the public. Devinci team rider Damien Oton is no exception, and he arrived with a carbon fiber version of the Spartan, the bike he took the win with at the last stop of the series in La Thuile. Devinci wouldn't disclose any further information about Damien's flashy new ride, but typically once a company commits to investing in a carbon mold it doesn't take too long before the bike is in full production.

Devinci Spartan carbon.

Devinci Spartan carbon.

• The paint scheme is the same as the aluminum version, but a closer look reveals a carbon fiber front triangle and seat stays.

• The finished look of the internal cable routing port covers and the downtube protector show that this isn't a one-off prototype.

• A carbon frame should help shave a good deal of weight off of the 160mm Spartan, making it an even more formidable weapon on the race circuit.

• Like Devinci's Dixon and Troy carbon models, the Spartan uses aluminum chain stays, a fairly common practice since this area takes the brunt of the abuse riders will be putting the bike through.

Like the countless "BREAKING NEWS: xyz downhill bike will now be available in exactly the same format but with 650b wheels" posts of yore, we now can enjoy countless "BREAKING NEWS: xyz aluminum enduro bike is now available in exactly the same format but carbon" posts for years to come.
  • 81 7
True, at least until they make bikes that can fly. That'll be really big news.
  • 11 1
Well it's not new, in fact this "now in carbon!!" trend came before the 650b trend (Spesh, SC, Devinci, GT,...)
  • 8 3
mikekazimer - like they can't already? Rampage shows that well Big Grin

Better wait for Trail Racing trend, the last unscorched land for mtb industry. Nobody is (yet) racing on 120mm bikes (on a massive scale) like Trek Fuel-X... just wait for that genre between Enduro and XCO with timed uphill stages. When that is done, there will be only e-bike racing left, aaaand they will really have to reinvent the wheel.
  • 32 4
The funny thing is that there is no "BREAKING NEWS" anywhere in the article. It says "spotted". You were probably one of those people who made themselves a bunker with 50 school buses of food when you heard a report about the y2k issue hahahahaha
  • 9 0
maybe they'll come up with active suspension like f1 in the 90s and find a way to make us pay over 10k for our bikes
  • 12 1
 sorta building off wakis comment:
i love it when people look at my 26" fuel ex with 130mm of travel and call it an 'xc' bike and wonder why i dont have an 'enduro' bike with more travel and 650b..

i tell them i just like to mtb.
  • 12 1
^ this. There's so many people on some of my local xc trails. Which don't need an enduro bike. And they're all selling their rigs to get an enduro bike because their friends have it. It's kinda sad sometimes

I think I will shoot myself if I see "Breaking news: New Trek Session 9.9, same format, but this time ELECTRIC!"

jumpman2334 - I can relate to what you wrote. This stuff of mine contains a dose of vanity because, well, why the eFF should I say it to random people on the internet... but well, a fart has built up and I used to let them go... I went for rock climbing on the artificial wall for the first time, I want to climb and sht and I am already having thoughts of selling my carbon bike. A bloke who was teaching me how to use all the safety gear, an Alpine climbing instructor, heard from my sister in law who was with me that I do MTB. He got into it lately and started to ask me lots of questions. We exchanged lots of kind remarks about eventual similarities in mental approach to practicing both sports, we talked a bit of gear, stem lenths, carbon blabla when he finaly asked me which kind of mountain biking I am practicing. Hundreds of flashbacks went through my head, particularly guys in flashy clothes, Enduro hype, eaten by some of my closest riding buddies, my recent quasi elitist approach to MTB, and it just got out of me: I just ride a bike in the forest, on rocks, enjoying ups & downs, I jump sometimes. And he got it, he just smiled. I was quite proud of myself for not talking about how much hype sht there is and how much better I am. At the same time I did not mention any discipline to need to explain myself if I can live up to a status of Freerider, XCer Enduro rider or whatever other nomenclature people are told to use, by press releases and magazines. Whoever you think you are, whatever you think that you are doing, at the end of all things - you ride a bicycle in off-road terrain.
  • 9 0
Waki I feel you man. I honestly think there is only two disciplines anyways unless you race. I'm either trail riding or downhilling. I'm not going "enduroing" (a word that makes me cringe). People seem to need some kind of validation to trail rides so they tack on the enduro name even if it's just a race format. Annoys me endlessly. What we do is Mountainbike. There doesn't have to be a title for everything! Unless again you're a professional racer, and someone asks what you race

It's kinda scary how good the marketing has been. I was riding along some trails and some local kids from the DH club stopped to ask some questions about a hidden DH track in the area. It was strange because only 2 years earlier they would have snubbed me because I was on a little bike (Devinci Troy), but instead they said, "Whoa! Nice Enduro". To add to that, it wasn't calling my Troy a Specialized Enduro, they had simplified (In the Australian way) any bike which wasn't clearly an XC race bike or DH bike to 'Enduro'.
  • 2 0
 @zegermans

IMO, people are too stupid to fall into all this new marketing BS. enduro is clearly the new hip thing along with 27.5. bike companies know they can capitalize on it.

not dogging on the wheel size or anything (im sure its fun as hell to ride), just saying that people are sucking this up far crazier than any vacuum out there.. everything now is labeled 'enduro specific', that wasnt the case 3-5 years ago.
  • 1 0
Like how just about no one ever went "I wish my wheels were just a tad bigger" until 3-5 years ago and now everybody and their brother are swamping shops for them.
  • 5 0
in the lbs sale bin was 2 identical seats but for the colour schemes. some how my brother keeping a straight face asks if they were endro specific, she hesitates, points to the bright blue one, "pretty sure that one is but not that one"
  • 1 0
 Chill out.
  • 1 0
I think we all fall for marketing in some way or other. Even Hadley hubs are marketed, albeit by their performance, quality, and lack of website. The number of people you see complaining about no website is free brand distribution in itself because the complaints or questions are usually followed by another post explaining that the matter is trivial because the hubs are amazing and the contact phone number or email. Heck, I'm even writing about them now.

I want to see racing over dirtjumps xD See who can scrub a 10 foot booter the best
  • 1 0
thats 4x basically, the jbc 4x revalations had some pretty big jumps

@WAKIdesigns "When that is done, there will be only e-bike racing left, aaaand they will really have to reinvent the wheel."

Haven't they already reinvented the wheel two times in the last five years?... Wink
  • 2 1
Yes I had it in mind when I was writing this. Resized wheels, axles, suspension game is pretty much finished, unless everybody will suddenly make USD forks. Electronics and electric engines is the last frontier and it is a particularly stupid one. I just wonder when the snake will eat it's tail Big Grin

It's lighter now that they took the vowels off the chainstay. SPRTN is way faster than SPARTAN.
  • 9 0
Way faster. You'll be SPRinTiN the entire time.

rock shox should be wining tons of money with this Pike. everybike using it and everybody wants it.. I want one
  • 6 2
Am I the only one tired of hearing new bikes referred to as "weapons?" seemed dumb at first and now it's just annoying. Guess it's better than "quiver killers" though.
  • 8 0
It's because they try to be sponsored by the NRA.

"GUNS DONT KILL PEOPLE... MOUNTAIN BICYCLES DO."

No, guns don't kill people, rappers do. I seen it in a documentary on BBC 2!

You know what they say: Don't bring a knife to a bike fight.
  • 1 0
rappers dont do shit these days
  • 6 0
Is that a scratch on the stanchion!?!? OMG nooooooooo!
  • 2 0
HAHAHA. Exactly what I was gonna say. No issue for them, I'm sure they got new ones for free or at half the price.
  • 4 0
This thing will kill the Enduro's, it has a geometry changing Flip-Chip!!!! In also seriousness it does look like a badass steed.
  • 2 1
I doubt the weight difference compared to the aluminum version will justify the cost. Unless DeVinci sets a new precedent on carbon bike pricing this is going to be expensive to shave probably a lb in weight. Just speculation.
  • 4 0
Actually Devinci is not bad - look at the pricing of the Atlas and Troy XP and XP carbon, less of a difference than most other brands.
  • 7 0
Going carbon isn't just for weight savings. See: GT Fury DH.
  • 7 0
less price difference than other brands, because aluminium Devinci are made in Canada...
  • 2 0
sngltrkmnd is spot on. lighter weight is just one benefit of a well made carbon frame. Said frame will also be stiffer, stronger, and provide a bit more of a damper ride quality.
  • 3 0
One pound is a lot of weight. Think about the difference in price between wheelsets or drivetrain to save a lb.
  • 5 0
Carbon devinci parts made in Taiwan

Aluminium alloy devinci parts made in Canada

'Boris bikes' (London hire bikes and other cities) made by devinci in Canada
  • 4 0
$500.00 difference on the frame is about the max it'll be based on the industry norm, the big price escalation in bikes now a days is the components and suspension, not that huge on the frames...don't hate me, just sayin'
  • 2 0
Usually with carbon elements they can manipulate them easier to gain tire and crank clearance, things like that, which would be difficult in Alu.
  • 1 0
Devinici make a slick looking bike, gotta say. What I really want is a light weight version of that Rock Razor tire for my 29er hardtail, though. The ultimate tread patter for hardpack!
  • 3 0
devinci why you make bikes so nice Frown . now i want a spartan!
  • 3 0
 Please be Affordable?
Yea Right!!!!
  • 4 0
no doubt...should come with a comparison chart like: You could buy this Devinci, or for the same price- A Hummer, Jet Ski and Aspen Chalet....
  • 2 0
That bike looks just amazing. But i guess will be way too expensive for me.
The brake levers are set very high, no?
  • 2 1
the linkage look much like a specialized enduro linkage minus the proprietary shock on the endure, which is a good thing. I like it.
  • 2 0
 I see Turner Highline.
  • 3 0
that looks like my next bike!
  • 1 0
don't like that much the color mix, I'd like better a full yellow, or full cyan
  • 2 0
Looks like a Pacific beach cruiser.
  • 4 6
If they use Alu on the seat stay due to it baring a large brunt of abuse shows they don't really have the trust in their products. Besides the Wilson I find personally find Devinci carbon bikes are very flexy. Even heard 130lb women say the same.
  • 2 1
No, it means that they know that carbon doesn't belong in the line of fire of a chain! That's like saying that people don't trust their alloy frames because they put rubber or cloth chainstay protectors! It's all about putting the different materials where they matter! Obviously Devinci found that it wouldn't be worth the cost, resources, or a slight gain in performance to make that part of the bike aluminum! I've heard the exact opposite about their frames being flexy! Heard they're nice and stiff. Not to mention that they offer a life time warranty on their carbon frames! Yeah, they really don't trust their product...
  • 1 1
Lol. Or I could be trolling.
  • 1 0
 True...
  • 1 0
Also - the seat stay is carbon. It's the CHAIN stay that's alu...

• The paint scheme is the same as the aluminum version, but a closer look reveals a carbon fiber front triangle and seat stays.
• Like Devinci's Dixon and Troy carbon models, the Spartan uses aluminum chain stays, a fairly common practice since this area takes the brunt of the abuse riders will be putting the bike through.
  • 3 1
I just threw up in my pants!
  • 2 1
 Ahhhhhh scratched stanchion..........nooooo
  • 4 1
Congrats on the obvious mate! The frame's overall look and construction details has been out for a little while now, aka Devinci's official release of the alloy 'Spartan' that was released somewhat recently. So it's quite obvious the Carbon Spartan would be based on the original Spartan design and therefore, just quite possibly, look very similar lol.

 Captain Obvious Never Surrender !

 Burn this stem.
  • 2 2
So the carbon frame comes with alloy rear and the alloy frame comes with a carbon rear??
  • 2 0
No. The alloy version comes with the same rear as the carbon version, carbon seat stay and alloy chain stay
  • 2 1
Lets hope they lengthened the top tube/reach.
  • 1 0
can't agree with you more jrocksdh. everything about that geometry looks money except the reach.

Am i wrong or this is a skratch on the fork?
  • 1 1
Does he ride with his brakes at that angle?
  • 3 5
Could Devinci fire the graphics guy? Seriously, I know the eighties are back but when I see that then I have to agree with people whojust want a black stealth frame!
  • 2 0
Did you see the team colors?
  • 1 0
Last years bikes in team colours were absolutely gorgeous, with the black and orange, that guy did a good job. You said you want stealth black? www.bikeradar.com/mtb/news/article/devinci-spartan-first-look-41227
  • 1 1
Also disliked team colours! But loved the blue black wilson or the other black greyish. Just not fan of these fading colors but obviously it's a mattervof taste. I said i'd still prefer no color (stealth) than those. But I like colors. I prefer the blue nomad to the black for instance. But fading colors?? Simply not for me.
  • 1 1
Really loving the paint job bike firms are giving bikes these days.
