Vallnord World Cup: A Day With Remi Thirion

Jul 29, 2013
by Matt Wragg
All through this season there has been one rider that all of the photographers and filmmakers have been talking about. A young, quiet French guy has been smashing apart the biggest, manliest lines the circuit can offer and looking good doing it. That rider is Remi Thirion and before his result today we were going to tell you that he's a rider you need to start watching as he is undoubtedly something a bit special... Now there's little we need to say about him. He also has history on his side, he rides for Commencal, who are supported by BOS Suspension this season. That brings back together the two men, Max Commencal and Olivier Bossard. The last time they worked together was on the legendary V-Process team in the 90s that propelled Nico Vouilloz and Anne-Caroline Chausson to success after success...

It was a fairly easy start for Remi rolling into the pits about half eight to give himself some time to chill and get ready for the short practice session in the morning.

Cut spikes were the tyre of choice for the track here in Vallnord. His mechanic Loic spent much of the morning trimming them down so he had fresh rubber for the big show.

Lying here on the table like this it may not look like much... But this is something a little bit special for mountain biking. In fact this kind of approach hasn t been seen at a World Cup downhill race when the Sunn team run by Max Commencal and Olivier Bossard worked together to dominate downhill for the best part of a decade. Today it is back in mountain biking when well... Max Commencal and Olivier Bossard have started working closely together again.

This was a familiar site for the afternoon waiting passing time quietly. If all you see of downhill racing is the live feed you d be forgiven for thinking it is all action. Reality is far from that. Days consist of lots of waiting for those short spells of intense action.

What is there to say about the run that followed? Sublime is the only word.

Here comes the mob. Remi gets carried by friends at the bottom. Chainsaws and all.
Riding for Commencal at a race on the French border meant this was more or less a home race and in the age old tradition of racing, when the local lad won, the crowd went nuts.

Remi is a shy man it was hard to hear what he was saying to the TV crews over the noise but the safe bet is very little. That grin says everything that needs to be said.

Olivier Bossard was one of the first people to congratulate him once the media and the crowd gave him a minute. This is a big day for Olivier too the last racer who won his suspension was a certain Nico Vouilloz back in 2002. This is the first time a World Cup downhill has been won on an airshock and after being here datalogging all week you have to wonder how big a part that work played in Remis victory. Even Olivier can t say for sure racing is never as simple as a single element but there is no doubt that lots of little factors all add up to big results.

Wonder if he can follow in the footsteps of the great French Rally protege that was Sebastien Loeb?
The French really seem to take their sport La seriously. Well done Remi.

Great to see Max Commencal and Olivier Bossard work together again!
They're the legend of the bike engineering.
It was Max Commencal who in 1982 he started his first bicycle company, Sunn Bicycles.
Then, in 1993 he invited Olivier Bossard to take care of the suspension in his race bikes.
In 1994 François Gachet and Anne Caroline Chausson aboard Sunn bikes went on to win everything:
World Cups, World Champs, European Champs and French Champs.
The rest is history!

BOS took it very seriously in Vallnord and it paid off!

Shame i didnt see it thanks to redbull
  • 48 3
Shame Jonny, as I did see it, thankx to Redbull.
  • 7 0
Just watch it on the replay.
  • 25 2
Jonny, are you really complaining about a small issue during redbull's FREE broadcast, which was quickly resolved?
  • 9 0
Then watch the repeat. Thanks to Red Bull we where able to see the World Cup in the first place. Think back two years, the Freecaster coverage wasn´t nearly as good.
  • 20 0
yeah Guys, stop blaming Rebull. How many sport can be proud of having a FREE broadcast for every worldcups, world champs and biggest Slopestyle/Freeride contests??? I thank redbull for that, even there is sometimes few problems(As non-free broadcasting also have). You guys, are never happy. When Freecaster was broadcasting, you were angry because they wanted us to pay for the coverage of the world cup, and now you are angry because Redbull is broadcasting for free??!!WTF
Then I'm so glad for Remi!! he's such a gnarly rider on the track, and so calm off!!! Well deserved win, and to live this on the inside was amazing!!!! BRAVO, CHAPEAU L'ARTISTE!
  • 10 0
The main problem was the arse that decided to post the results on the live feed at the side while we were waiting for the video feed to come back on. I hate him.
  • 2 2
im annoyed at the fact it went off during all the important stuff and some moron posted the results at the side of the video! which is probably not redbull's fault actually :/
  • 2 0
I agree with you guys. It's not cool to spoil such a high voltage finals!!! I didn't know there were people spoiling the results, it's all the more frustrating as it seems that the problem has been solved for the replay. I'm glad to have lived this in Andorra, in real!! That was just insane, the atmosphere was amazing, every rider was cheered by people, so impressive!
  • 1 0
I know its stupid to spoil it for others. I was looking forward to that race too. Got home from france in time to watch it. The only reason i was reading the messages was that redbull were updating to tell us how long was left before it resumed.

The problem was the delay after Cam Coles crash. As far as I heard the satelite time Red bull had bought expired because of the long time it took to get Cam from the Mountain. And they couldn´t get another satelite in time.
That happens on a lot of sport broadcasts, not only on free ones. You can´t blame Red Bull for that.
  • 1 0
yep!! long and hard time during the delay!! The sun was burning!!
  • 2 0
Dont read the live chat ? its only ever full of people repeating what the last person said.
  • 2 0
Has anybody heard anything about Cam Cole? Hope hes allright.

It's not the first World Cup downhill won on an air shock. First win with an air shock on a modern long travel bike yes, but back in the days when DH bikes had 80-100 mm of travel, plenty of World Cup DH races were won with an air shock. Not trying to be argumentative, I'm just a stickler about racing history is all.
  • 7 2
At some point, I thought you had to be english speaker to win a world cup !But not !so stoke to see you won the race !I screamed in front of my computer ! When you was Sunn pro rider 5 years ago, I was lucky enough to have a ride with you,but I did not know you. These 2 last years I watched your name climbing up in the top list, and today, you are at the top, you are THE top !Congrat froggy !Wish you still racing hard with smoothness and pleasure !

Good to see different faces on the podium!

what i cant believe is that gee was 2 seconds up at the first split, and then finishes 1.5 seconds down! i know gee got a bit wild down the end of the course but if he had held it together it would of been a lot closer. Respect to Remi tho, some of those line choices were inspired!! awesome to watch.
  • 1 1
pressure for gee was probably a bit too much, being called for a threepeat especially right after his sister wins is pretty brutal, then again pressure for remi was pretty big as well
  • 7 0
That must have been one tabarnak of a race!

When we look back at french DH history, we can say that, yes, we are proud of our riders.
Many thanks to Remi Nico Fabien Damien Anne Caro, all the guys and girls still shredding and, of course, thank you Cedric!
(absolutely no offense to other nationalities rider.)
(and by the way: GOOOO TROY!!!)

Good call to follow him Matt, good call indeed.. Journalists would dream of covering such an epic.
  • 3 0
That line he took down the last steep section was amazing! I watched it 3 more times, it was so much different than everyone elses.Musta been super sketch if that was the case.Congrats to him.
  • 2 0
He made it work smoothly though. Everyone else was using the turns to shed speed and Remi just pointed it. Tough to beat a guy who took such a gnarly line. And think of this, if it wasn't gnarly, everyone would have been on it. At least most of the top ten legends that we saw blasting down those chutes. Awesomeness.

I hope to see a report like this here in pinkbike (Canada) about the amazing year Steve Smith (Canada) is having.
Good for Remmi yesterday!!!!!
  • 4 7
who? how many WC has he won this year?
  • 8 0
Didn't Steve make every top 5 this year? Unless I'm mistaken, except for Gee, Steve has been pretty much the most constant rider this year.
  • 2 3
Sure, but I dont like the nationalistic thinking here. Remi Thirion wasnt really a name in the DH WC until now and that is the main difference and makes this article valid. The only time I noticed him was in Val Di Sole because he doubled some amazing stuff (Dirt TV Quali Video). Give Remi Thirion some credit. And yes this comes from a German who usually refers to France as Baguette Germany Big Grin ^^
  • 2 0
I recognise and I did enjoy to see a new face on the podium yesterday, my comment was only after I saw this nice report from pinkbike over Remi and I thought that maybe pinkbike can do the same from some one like Steve who is the only one Canadian who is on the news since last year on the top 10 of the UCI DH. I am really happy for Remi and I hope to see him again in two weeks.
  • 3 0
Lame that UCI doesnt have this track on the schedule next season. They should listen to the riders, everyone was stoked on this track. Instead you get Leogang bike park s@*t

I wonder how many people will try an air shock out back now.... (I already use one on my dh bike and the vivid air beats the rc4 when timing on all tracks). It equals the vivid coil.

Interesting that it was not the suspension, the light frame, the datalogging that won the race, but the vision and commitment of a rider to spot and ride 1 line, 1 section so much faster than anyone else.
Gee was so far up with 40s to go he was out of probably the 5th last corner before Remi entered it, then there was the steep steps section as you exit the woods. Remi and Sam insided the way in when others went around it, then Remi insided and doubled the way out, the line and commitment was a winning formula, Gee made a mistake going outside, add the carried speed and Remi demonstrated how much 1 line can be worth.
A well deserved win, just based on that line alone.
Knowing the result and spkit times in advance of the delayed coverage made it more exciting in some respects, looking for where it was won and lost. Gotta say I screamed when he hit that inside line and doubled the flat bit at the bottom of the chute. Sooooo good.

Arrives at the pits about half 8...does he mean 7:30? Nvr heard half ...but I'm a recluse.
