It's been a month and a half since Pietermaritzberg and the first DH race of the season, and now we're re-starting and getting into the thick of it. The Val di Sole DH is this weekend, and then Fort William next weekend. To start things off check out these day 1 photos from Pinkbike lensman Fraser Britton.
Remember to check back on Sunday, June 3rd as Pinkbike will be hosting the Redbull.tv live stream of the DH, starting at 5:15 AM PDT. More info can be found here.
There are some big things coming this week in Val Di Sole...
You know you're fast when you have your own Rock Shox tune.
The views here do not suck.
Yup, the World Cup is back on. " When was the last time you serviced your fork? ... AFRICA??"
The view from the start gate here hasn't changed. Appearances can be deceiving though...
The track switches up quickly once you get into the trees. Keeping people on their toes is Pepe (the course builder's) goal.
Busiest track walk ever.
Deep loose loam has the VDS master smiling.
Fresh dirt, There will be some mega roost flying here, at 8:30 am sharp.
It looks like the lineup to a Tokyo subway on the downhill track. It wasn't just riders and team staff, media is everywhere. Got Red?
What???
The gnarl chute that ended the track is now a high speed straight away with a tight corner before the sender. Get some!
Sam Hill contemplates the corner where he went down a few years ago and let his 5th set of rainbows slip away.
I want Sam to win too!! He was top of the game until his stupid shoulder injury, I'd like to see that it didn't ruin his career. If he doesn't win, Stevie smith better do it! go canada
Sam has said it himself he wants revenge on this track after his infamous ride in 08 so it will be interesting to see what happens he will either:
1> destroy everyone by a massive margin 2> repeat what happened in 08 (or at ;east do something similar) 3> be outdone by the young talent such as hart or brosnan
i cant see him winning by a small margin..... but only time will tell
I'd like too see Sam take a top 5, But I have been a Hart fan ever since his first year in the juniors so I always cheer the kid on. Being the same age as me he is my inspiration when I ride. along with Brosnan, who I wish a fast recovery because he has some of the best style in DH and no doubt has the skill to take it. I've been an Atherton fan for years so I would like to see him take 2nd. Anyways best of luck to all riders and hopefully we can have an injury free event!!!!
By the way i think its time to settle in and watch The Tipping point and get a feel for how things were last time Sam raced this track. Still the best race documentary to date for sure.
Looks like the Sam Hill cult is alive and well, it's been literally years since he finished on a World Cup podium but some of his fans still think he will win every race. This is gonna be an exciting race, there could be some serious explosions. Everything else this year has been a warm-up the real season starts now. 2012 may be the year flat pedals die on the World Cup circuit, if it wasn't last year.
1. Gwin 2. Hart 3. Smith 4. Spagnolo 5. Minnar
Minnar and Hannah have had trouble here, sleeper picks are Ropelato, Jackson, Strobel, Rude, & don't forget about Beaumont, who won here two years ago
exactly, and just before that in 3 Minute Gaps he says how much he and most of the other riders hate racing like that. Sure the riding is fun but when it comes to racing its not so good.
I'd love to see Smith and Gwin have great rides but I think Minaar would be a safer bet than Hill for rounding out a top three prediction based on he's been riding.
Props for Hannah support. He's on fire this year... finally! Seems like he's always had somethiung small trash his runs, be cool to see him pull it all together.
I hope Sam takes it, I'd like to see him at the top of the podium again, but will be hard considering last years performance of Gwin - fastest and not loose at all, he didn't even have a slight slide on the inside line of the SAM's corner while Hart desintegrated the burm - the brutal precision?
i was going to 'MERICUH!! but everytime i do it i just get neg propped and below threshhold.. but i agree everyone would love to see Sam win but, his chances are slim with how fast Gwin and Minnar are now..
leg broken and world cup in Italy is a bad combination...loosing the world cup circus just 100km from home!!! Anyway I will be screaming for DANNY all the weekend long! Oh my god Danny, stay on your bikeeeeeeeeeee
It will be an awesome weekend... this is our 1st world cup ever for team UBK, can't wait to see my boys in action. Sam was looking fit very fit and said he's ready to go. interesting to see on practice today. I think we'll up for a few surprises on final
Danny Hart could be in good position, as he's tiny and this track looks about some tight corners and skipping over the roots. Greg should be 1st or 2nd. Smith looks like on fire. And if Sam can keep it together, he'll be nr.1. I don't think that Gwin will be in top 3... there are just too many crazy guys going out there, and not sitting down before finish. This is just my opinion and predictions.
I'm going to cheer for Sam too but I just hope all this pressure doesn't get to him. I know he wants redemption but he'll need to stay focused to take a win.
Love this sport. All round the world right now, there are mountain bikers reading this page and making involuntary noises over photos of loamy soil and rocks.
Crashed during seeding of the iXS Euro Cup in Leogang during the seeding. They said at the time there were "no major injuries" but that he would need a few weeks off.
good call brother, its not the flag that makes us humans on bike's,we all bleed red for the love of something good in life, where all brother & sisters on earth 1.
Because its his ride back after having his kid. Sam Hill was the greatest, untouchable on any downhill track.
He is coming back from injury.. He will win another world cup, just need's to find his rhythm again.
