USA MTB Grand Prix: Sugarbush, VT

Jun 17, 2012
by Dave Trumpore
After kicking off in Port Angeles way back in April, action picked up again with round two of the MTB Grand Prix in Vermont. Sugarbush Resort was the venue and while they have a history of running regional races for many years this was the first time they have stepped up to host a round of the national series, and they didn't disappoint.

The Track started off at full speed right out of the gate and stayed out of the ski slopes for the first minute with a combination of rough and rocky ledges and large bermed corners.

Riders then entered the "Eden Woods" where they found off camber rock slabs, G-outs, lots of rocks and even more roots, all held together by loamy brown dirt. With sunny skies and temps in the high 80's all weekend, the only thing lacking on the course was mud... but no one seemed to be complaining about that.

With two rounds of the World Cup falling right on the heals of the MTB Grand Prix there was no shortage of top riders in attendance who were using the event as a bit of a tuneup, including Trek World Racing, Specialized USA, DRD Intense, and a large contingent or riders from Australia and New Zealand.

Seeding took place on Saturday with Justin Leov leading the charge just in front of Neko Mulally and Mitch Ropelato. For the Women, Lauren Daney kept her hot streak going by setting the fastest time with Joanna Petterson, and Katie Holden in tow.

Sunday was race day and riders hit the track early trying to find the extra seconds they were missing after the seeding runs. And while some put in impressive rides in the finals, like DRD Intense's Austin Warren who ended up 4rth at just 17 years of age, no one was able to knock Justin Leov or Lauren Daney from the top spot.

Pro Men Final:
1. Justin Leov 3.24.85
2. Mitch Ropelato 2.26.57
3. Neko Mulally 3.29.75
4. Austin Warren 3.31.72
5. Curtis Keene 3.32.43

Pro Women Final:
1. Lauren Daney 4.16.39
2. Joanna Petterson 4.18.65
3. Katie Holden 4.22.41
4. Kristen Courtney 4.43.15
5. Kate Parhiula 4.57.61

It is too bad Sugarbush didn't promote this a bit more locally for spectators. This would have been great to see, but I didn't even know it was happening and I live 20 minutes away. Even a flyer at some local trail heads or reaching out to local clubs would have done it. Sugarbush is a great mountain with a lot of potential and we would love to see them do well with biking for a win-win for both the resort and bikers.

Couldn't agree more. I am on their customer email list and the event wasn't even in the email blast sent out last week regarding summer events. The brewfest that was going on was during the race was included as well as multiple other resort happenings throughout the summer. Missing was the race and the fact that this was also opening weekend for their bike park. That's a pretty big oversite I you ask me as it would have landed in the inbox of a few hundred people.

I spoke with the vp of marketing on Saturday PM and she was completely unaware that nobody knew about the race. Locally for spectators or regionally for racers. Or about the walkie talkie timing for qualifing. A month ago few even knew of the race and planned on attending Whiteface. Hmmmmm, almost like some at the mountain want the biking to disappear....

I was riding at Sugarbush all weekend and I had no clue what day the race actually was. I guess I could of figured it out when it was still roped off on sunday. It was interesting, I showed up to go riding, I ended up riding after the race. Really sad spectator show. It felt like I was the only non-racer watching. Let alone the only non-racer it felt like at the actual bike park after.

They weren't supposed to open for bikes until the 22nd of June so I was very surprised when I saw this write up this morning. Again, great job Dave on the pics and story. A DH race and brew fest could be a good combination, maybe they didn't want to try to mix the two.Anyway, good to see some VT gnar on Pinkbike this morning and I'm hoping Sugarbush follows through with the momentum they have with lift service biking.

The venue had no idea what was going on. Split practice? Seeding was less than accurate. I had to call up 3 times to confirm that Friday practice was included in the $100 or $120 reg fee. Thankfully the track was awesome, hopefully racers will return in the future to prep for Saint Anne if the date can be kept.

Double check the Pro W results and times; pretty sure Stephanie Sowles was 5th and Kate Parhiula 6th. ow.ly/i/HFds
  • 2 0
That's correct - Stephanie was in 5th with the 4:43, Kristen had a 4:36 and I crashed my way into 6th. And it should be "Parhiala" but they couldn't get that right after 3 tries...

Thanks for the correction. Results were taken from the printout that was noted as official at the venue. I was not aware additional changes were made.
