To begin as the day ended... The victor's ride. Must be something in the water: 2008, the Atherton clan, then on Commencal, sweeps the field for DH and 4X. Fast forward to the present day and we again see a Commencal take the win on home soil. Unbelievable scenes.

Hill was up out of bed with the lark for practice getting the furnace stoked for the demanding day of hopes and high expectation ahead. There s a big difference between making up the podium and heading up the podium and once you ve had it it doesn t tend to come back to you as Rennie or Vouilloz et al can vouch. Today he ended on the same second as Gee showing a big move against that trend and the scene is now set for a sustained assault on the top step.

Here s a better look at the tread on the shorty and the moto influence is obvious. Big side blocks plenty of space to clear mud and a nice square profile. For race runs the Syndicate played it safe though and switched back to their well-loved Minions and High Rollers. We re looking forwards to seeing the rest of the contents of that box.

Good lord Cedric, your style and humor will be missed in DH WC, a scene these days that often lacks both. We can only dream of the fun you'll continue to bring to EWS. Live long & Ride Hard, Legend.

I know right, see Gee on the podium? He didn't look too chuffed, but he's still leading the championship. I just wish some racers would loosen up, it's all about fun!
  • 25 1
Look at Smith. He's got a similar look. These guys don't like losing. It's why they are as good as they are.
  • 3 2
Yeah fair enough. But I bought Gee up because he still came second, which keeps him in the number one spot in the championship, but he still seems pissed. I completely agree with you though.
  • 7 1
 Maybe he's knackered?
  • 5 3
Knackered? Maybe so but I guarantee that everyone on PB could still muster a smile if they made the podium at a WC race. Look at Gwins interview, he was smiling and having a good time despite all the flaming that has occured. That's why I am a fan of Gwin and not Gee.
  • 7 0
 We love you CG.
  • 7 2
@unknown and Karpiel - it's not about fun and they will be wondering wtf just happened and why they are not on the top step, they don't get paid to smile for losing which is exactly how they see it, much like most racers.

What you are seeing is real emotion and not a fake smile just for the cameras. Comparing users of PB (who will never podium a WC) to an elite athlete who is used to being number 1 in the world is well, just silly.

I just think its hard for regular people to understand the mindset of a top professional. Its just so different. Most of us ride bikes because its fun and we love it and think how awesome it is just to get to do what these guys do. Its like that with all pro sports really. But when its your job, like it is to these top professionals, its a whole different ballgame. They are paid to perform and their jobs in an indirect way depend on it. They not only race but train and practice incredibly hard all year to in races and do well. When they don't I'm sure there is alot of disappointment there and I can't blame them if they don't look elated up there, even though they got 2nd and 3rd place. For guys who can and have won before, that's disappointing.
  • 1 0
Looks like they forgot their immense "media Training" and were just real for a moment. Flames to follow.
  • 1 0
i suppose the saving grace for Gee is that at least Remi hasn't racked up a lot of points this season so he's not really a threat to the WC overall, relative to say Stevie or Greg who do well in most races. Troy is looking excellent so far this year.

and last but not least, CG: thank you for the good times!

My girlfriend can lip read and she told me that on the podium Sam leant over to Troy and said "hey mate, you've got to have a ride on my new bike. Its worth at least 10 seconds compared to the demo on a track like this".

As much as it would have been awesome to see Sam Hill take the win, once it came down to him or thirion I kind of found myself rooting for Remi. It's always cool to see someone unexpected come out of nowhere like that and take the win.
  • 9 0
Sino428, Very well said and at the end of the day Remi did a flawless run through the toughest course of the year and prevailed. I'm very happy for him. He deserves the limelight and it's great to see new blood on the podium. Dynasties are boring.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but what's the deal with cutting the spike tires? I don't race so I'm not all that familiar with it but I always see it mentioned at these WC races. What's the benefit? Why don't tire companies just produce a tire to perform like a cut tire right out if the box?
  • 2 0
It gives the riders a template for how they like their tread. Some riders like every knob, or every 2nd knob cut in the centre, and maybe every 3rd one on the sides. It basically allows less rolling resistance for how the rider feels about that particular track, and how much bite they will need cornering, but yet allowing them to carry the most controlled speed. Hope this sort of clarifies it for yas.
  • 2 0
My take on it, (I could be completely wrong btw) A tire like a minion or high roller will be faster then a uncut wet scream but will lack in grip and mud clearing abilities for a track like this. Now a cut wet scream wont be as fast ether, but on a super steep track with little pedaling, rolling resistance isn't a huge issue. Now the fact that the track wasn't insanely muddy meant that the riders didn't need the full spike, meaning that they could cut them down and not sacrifice to much grip.

Thats how it came out of my head, hopefully makes sense to you haha.

As for companies producing a tire the equivalent of a cut spike, some companies do, Schwalbe make the Muddy Marry for an example. Maxxis aren't quite there yet, but judging by those photos their getting close.
  • 4 0
Agree with above. Also looks to me that the new maxxis shorty in the pictures above serve the purpose of a cut down mud spike. Just a guess.
  • 1 0
from a racers perspective - cut spike on rock and root offer a little bit more forgiveness than a full spike tyre manufacturers do make them - muddy mary is not one of them sorry, it's an all rounder- yes it has fantastic mud clearing abilities but is defo not like running a cut spike as it works very well on root n rock - where a spike will not. spesh storm, bontrager do one as well but cannot think of the name.
  • 2 0
the name shorty would be quite spot on for a cut spike tire out of the box
  • 2 0
Thanks for all the responses. I think I have a better idea of it now. I kind of assumed it was some sort of modification for a certain condition, I was just more curios why tire manufacturers don't just produce a tire for that particular condition, since they make so many models of tires anyway. Having to cut down all those tires seems like a bitch.

First photo caption: " Must be something in the water: 2009, the Atherton clan, then on Commencal, sweeps the field for DH and 4X."  Quebec will hardly be home turf for Steve Smith, all of the previous DH WC venues this year have been closer to each other than Mt. Saint Anne is to Steve's home.

Don't forget that Steve performs amazingly in MSA. That heartbreak finished to 2nd a few years back even broke my heart. Never but never forget though that Sam Hill won the World Championship at MSA in 2010. Sam really knows MSA and it really won't surprise me if he qualifies it in 1st again.

Either Stevie or Sam at MSA and I'll be a happy camper (and yes, I'll definitely be there in person to see it).

Any updates on Gwins latest excuse?
  • 6 2
the most dominate rider in the last 10 years needs an excuse? right.
  • 2 0
He came off track at a few points. Said it from the hot seat couch (while in 3rd).

I find it a bit shit that he always has an excuse. Sam Hill was stuck in 5th gear for the final motorway at Fort Bill and was well in contention on the split before it but you didn't hear him moaning to the cameras straight after. It only came out in the weeks after the race.

Fair enough Gwin may have has issues and been on the pace, we'll never know but it's bad sportsmanship to always have an excuse when you don't win.
  • 1 0
there is really no excuses unless you get a mechanical/flat, gee made a few mistakes in his run, stevie rode too conservatively, gwin also made mistakes, but none of those are excuses, if you make a mistake or crash then it's your fault
