Race Face Is Back - The Canadian Heritage Continues

May 10, 2011
by Julian Coffey

After over 18 years of business, Race Face entered into receivership on March 12, 2011, leaving a massive gap in the boutique mountain bike market. Riders, dealers and distributors alike were stunned as groundbreaking components such as Atlas Freeride, SIXC, NEXT SL, and Turbine suddenly became rare collectables.

In a tightly contested bidding war for the Canadian manufacturer, North Shore local and former Race Face VP of Sales Chris Tutton has emerged at the helm. Tutton joined Race Face in 1994 as a customer service rep, was promoted to Director of Sales in 1998, and then to VP of Sales in 2002. After 14 years with the brand, Chris was instrumental in helping push sales to over $15 million per year. He resigned in 2008, taking over as Director of OEM Sales for Easton Bell Sports.

“I have always believed in the Race Face brand and in the quality of the products we make,” said Tutton. “We will build upon a very solid foundation and continue to meet the needs of our current customers, while expanding our market and focusing our product line.”

Chris Tutton will remain as a contractor with Easton Bell Sports, hiring an additional OEM sales person who will report to him while he rebuilds Race Face as its new Managing Director. “The opportunity to work with a company like Easton Bell Sports has been incredible. I am very fortunate, not only to have their continued support, but also to have found a venture that aligns so well with their business philosophy for excellence and innovation.”

“Easton Bell Sports has had a great partnership with Chris over the last three years and we are pleased to continue that relationship. We believe in the synergy that can be created with the two companies.” Bernie Doering, SVP-Global Sales, Action Sports, Easton-Bell Sports.

Derek Wills, Race Face’s former Global Operations manager and most recently North American Sales and Business development Manager, has also returned as a junior partner. Wills graduated from Simon Fraser University for Business Management, working in the industrial distribution business for 3 years before joining Race Face in 2001.

Race Face Performance Products will remain based in Vancouver, close to the North Shore, the company’s original and ultimate testing ground for lightweight yet durable MTB products. Key employees will be rehired under the new business structure and production is expected to restart within a few weeks. Warranties will be honoured on all Race Face products.

The component product line for 2012 is complete and ready to roll out, including the new Atlas FR Stealth line. Turbine 9 and 10 speed rings will ship almost immediately, as will Race Face’s carbon SIXC and NEXT cranks and bars. The company will continue to develop and refine their proprietary Optimized Carbon Technology in-house.

Rocky Mountain’s Brett Tippie, a figurehead rider for Race Face since 1995, could barely contain the stoke: “Talk about a fairytale ending and wicked new beginning for these guys! How cool is it to be able to keep it in the homeland? And they’re bringing back the crew that made Race Face legit. As I’ve said before, Race Face is the cat’s ass! Stay tuned for more news - I’ve already heard the rumour of 83mm carbon cranks!”

“This is fantastic news,” said Darren Mabbott, Managing Director of Silverfish, Race Face’s UK distributor. “I was always confident that a buyer would be found for Race Face, but to hear that Chris Tutton has bought Race Face is a huge boost to the brand. I have known Chris and worked with him for over 12 years. He is passionate about Race Face, focuses on quality and innovation, and brings a high level of professionalism to the table. Race Face will thrive under Chris’ control, and the future once again looks bright.”

Raceface now need to make a zombie graphic for their parts to celebrate coming back from the dead. How cool would that be? White parts with hoards of zombies, body parts, and other zombie stuff all over it.

So glad to hear the great news, to bad they lost Aaron Chase that would of helped the come back. I'm sure they have some marketing plans to come back with a ton of new parts and up and coming riders. Welcome back Race Face.

sick! my bars have warranty again!
  • 9 1
@Tate27: get over it, MEC had nothing to do with it if you would only be able to keep up with the story from the beginning. :/
  • 11 6
It partialy had to do with it... Lambert is a huge distributor for bike shops in Canada, and the fact that they dropped them when they started dealing with MEC largely contributed to where they were at in March. Im glad that there back running and I hope that Lambert Picks them up again along with other large Distributors like Norco. I hope they're more careful this time in their distribtion methods so we can continue to see the production of Canadian Made Bicycling Components.

Zombies?! WTF... Only vampires get more teenage emo than zombies. Undead? I don't want world of warcraft on my cranks! A guy on a trail riding by and going Hello bretheren! I'm the Wankiler, the higher elf of the Post Office, tonight the fate of traitors of alliance shall come, these ancient woods will witness my X-up!

Ever heard of something positive, like Phoenix? Smile

i think your missing the point tho... undead, back from the dead. race face closed and was dead. now its back..

WAKI you really are an idiot. Did you ever think all those people were cheering and dancing because the death of Bin Laden marks the end of a ten year man hunt for one of the world's most notorious terrorists? The part thats really sad is I know deep down inside you would give anything to live in America, the land of opportunity. You would give up being a stupid Pole to be a "redneck" American so fast its not even funny. Stop hating something you will never be and accept the fact that you are stuck in your miserable county for the rest of your worthless life.

loaded, some people have a BMW and insecurities, some have big brain and big Willy, giving them confidence Big Grin

BTW I live in Sweden, drive a nice eco-friendly Volvo and they seem to like me I'm a Nomad - learn something about that concept from Native Amerians, they know a lot that you don't Big Grin

chill, i'm not going to make any political issue out of that in here (yet!)

Let's be happy the Race Face is back! Go Race Face!!! I'll buy some Canadian brew today and drink it to celebrate their comeback. If I won't find anything in liquor store, I'll make some pancakes with maple syrup Big Grin

BTW: anybody, any tips for Canadian beer? any brand names that might be available in Europe?
  • 1 1
Aye that would be good to know! Anyone?
  • 2 1
waki try a Labatts if you can find. and i like the Phoenix idea, a flamin bird rising up to live again
  • 2 2
 @chillzrace,thx - I think I recognize it, I'll look for it.
  • 3 0
well maybe raceface can do both idea's. A pheonix because when they die they always come back alive, and zombies because they are undead and basicaly raised back from the dead. Both are good idea's and some would look nice on other bikes
  • 5 1
 k. Cmontjumper i think youuuu are missing the point. A phoenix is a majestic bird, which dies, and than is reborn out of the ashes. WAAAAY better fit than zombies. Race Face was on-top of the world, they died, now they rise out of returnership to restart their rise to the top again. PEEEERFFFECT. Plus it would make for some siiiick red, orange and yellow themed parts.
  • 2 0
oh and also. don't go with Labatt's. go with something good. Go with a Rickard's Red or if you wanna enjoy some pancakes and maple syrup go with a Rickard's Dark. Not sure if its available there. But i think you'd appreciate a pint of Rickard's in Europe much more than you would enjoy a laaame beer from Labatt's.
  • 5 0
a zombie is a bit of a half arsed attempt at being alive really itd be like saying oh were back but a bit shitter than before and with a missing arm Im thinking jesus really, nails on your grips and pedals, the full shabong
  • 4 6
Yea phoenix is quite neat. it's a mythical minion out of this earth and Zombie is a pretty much nothin more than a walking piece of remnants of someone that was stupid enough to become a zombie Big Grin As well as Undead it smells bad, produces noises and grunts from Doom 1 era. If you decapitate, "de-arm" and "de-leg" a Zombie it's just stinky meat lying around. You can kill a phoenix, but next day it will come back and fk your sht up!

Unfortunately no Canadian beer in Sweden Frown Maple syrup pancakes it shall be! if all fails I will use my RF seatpost to eat icecream! CELEBRATIOOOOON! Big Grin

Leave Jesus alone... he has a big trouble right now, figuring out whether he should send Osama to hell, or make him a saint martyr... I also believe he would not fancy being nailed again, as while I am told by teologists and priest at sunday, we nail him all the time anyways. As "supernatural and from far far away" the Christian Faith might seem to be to some, taking a logical thinking into consideration about it, your concept is a bit... "impossible" to say the least? Jesus died for your sins, got resurected by his Father, then went to heaven and watches after people, including MTBikers - he's not coming back even if Obama sends special forces to Vatican to sodomize everyone. Navy Seals Sodomization Unit! Jesus is a symbol of one resurection not many...

I only hope, they won't do the mistake of Marzocchi which almost died after Tenneco bought them and decided that the medicine for their collapsing business is move stuff to Far East and lower the production price and retail price, in effect lowering standards. I am speculating (as usual Big Grin ) that by the end of 2009 Marzocchi was as down as by the time production was moved from Italy - same effect - even worse crap to deal with

It's a wishful thinking, but if RF comes back big still manufacturing from BC that would be amazing! That would be such a hope booster, that we can do it on our own "western" ground! Big thumbs up Race Face!

As a former employee I was sad to see them go. I was there during the days where Chris was at the sales helm and I can't think of a better guy to take over.  jajajaj...I knew it!!!! Even insiders from pinkbike told me that it was a done deal, that race face was dead after their website continued to be open. It was obvious that such an important brand and with so much power would just go away like that without any big bidders trying to get their hands on the scraps RF. Thanks Chris Tutton for taking command of Race Face. Its evident that he has great roots and pride for the brand....good to hear form you Rafe Face, wellcome back....

Once again the day is safe. I have to say that i have NEVER broken any RF componetnts although i ride bikes for over 20 years and i abused many many bikes and broken lots of bike components. Really, go RACE FACE! Greets from Slovenia!

Chris Tutton is one of the reasons I have been such a die hard supporter and advocate for Race Face. Shortly before his departure to EBS he helped me with an issue on some old turbine cranks that should never have been warranty. Im sure it helped to know him a bit but still... Chris, you are the man!!!

Eu quero continuar me divertindo. Sempre. Obrigado Chris. E bom trabalho

  • 1 0
Great! However, who do you think will be the Canadian distributor since they were dropped by Cycles Lambert when they RF started selling to MEC?
  • 4 0
Having a canadian distributor at all in the first place, for a canadian parts manufacturer was all kinds of stupid. Losing CL just meant the prices went down at the dealer level and by extension, the retail level also. Selling to MEC actually worked out very well for RF and didn't effect the LBS network at all (unlike CL's doomsaying predicted) because MEC wasn't ordering all that much high end RF stuff anyway, and most LBS's don't bother ordering the lower end RF products that are typically seen OEM on many bikes. For that matter, Crank Brothers sells their Cobalt wheels and high end eggbeater pedal models thru MEC, and their canadian distributor (Norco Products) didn't cry "the sky is falling, we're dropping them" like the pussies at CL did.

I used to order Liken Carbon fiber products direct from the manufacturer in Quebec in the mid-90s, and then they signed with CL to become their "exclusive" distributor in Canada, and the dealer prices instantly jumped 20%. And they went from being a competitive alternative to american made carbon components to no alternative at all.
  • 1 0
KMI took over eastern Canada distribution for Raceface over a year ago, they sold quite a bit of stuff in the last year including delivering a fair bit of bookings before the bankruptcy took place, they will likely continue supplying the east
  • 1 0
Sounds good! I work at a bike shop and I'm actually looking for a specific Race Face part that we can't get since CL dropped RF. I've never heard of KMI and it looks like they service mostly Eastern Canada. Bummer. Looking forward to finding out how I can get a hand on some RF parts again!
  • 1 0
KMI is located in the east but they ship nationwide. Personally i prefer distributors who have just ONE location they ship from than say Norco with Vancouver and Toronto, because half the time you want something specific, its only in Vancouver and the rest of what you need is in toronto instead. And they treat it as two seperate orders because they're shipping from both locations, so both have to hit the minimums for an order. PhatMoose Cycles in ottawa ordered direct from RF in vancouver though, so there's no reason your shop couldn't have done so instead.

Right... the hardworking, bike loving, passionate people that make this brand great stole from canadian business owners. Don't project your distaste for previous poor management on what looks like a solid team.

this is a Mountain Bike news forum, this is Mountain Bike news. Where else do you release Mountain Bike news if not on a Mountain Bike news forum? I am confused!! If it has no place here on Pinkbike then they should also take out the story of the new FOEs am bike, how to become a bike park instructor, hell that means all news is out...
  • 1 0
exactly JezzaE! austrian boy can go crawl back down his hole hide from it if he doesnt like it, not our fucking problem is it.
