Preview: MET 2014 Helmets

While MET may not be as familiar of a brand to North American riders, the Italian company has a strong following in Europe in both the road and mountain bike markets. For 2014, MET has updated their lineup, an update that includes the return of the Parachute, which is likely the world's lightest full face helmet, weighing a claimed 620 grams. The design of the Parachute has undergone a much needed revision, and the helmet now more closely resembles a proper full face as opposed to a road helmet with a chin guard attached to it. If the ventilation works as well as MET claims, this could be a good choice for enduro racers who don't want to carry two separate helmets with them.

MET also has three other helmets designed for all-mountain riders, with the Parabellum taking on the role of their high end half-shell helmet. Featuring extended coverage at the back of the head, and an extended, adjustable visor, the Parabellum also has a removable POV camera mount that bolts to the top of the helmet. Coming in at a claimed weight of 270 grams, the Parabellum is remarkably light for a helmet in this category.

It is worth mentioning that although the helmets are EN 1078 and AS/NZS2063 certified, MET doesn't currently have US distribution in place, and for that reason they have not applied for CPSC certification on the Parachute and Parabellum. In Canada, MET products are available through Mountain Equipment Co-op.

 enduro is last season. adventure has 26 wheel size. the next big thing in mountainbiking. as well as your ride your bike down up and around and are timed on some parts of it.

 +3 for a Troy Lee Edge. Had it when I rode my GT Karakoram with a Kinesis aluminum fork and later my KHS Alite 3000 with a Manitou FS Ti, set up single speed, sub 21 lbs. I thought the Edge made a lot of sense. It was definitely very lightweight but a lot more protection than any typical half-shell.

 Whine and complain...I live where it's typically 30 degrees plus in the summer, 250 bucks for a lid isn't that bad. It's better price than a TLD, has met standards, and isn't going to make me sweat balls all summer. Sounds like a worth while purchase.

 It's not a DH helmet. It's 650 grams. What does the Down-O-Matic or TLD 3 weigh? Apples to oranges. And again with the cost? Be quiet already. Strong, light, cheap... Pick one.

 I have one of the Parachute helmets that I bought a few years back. It's light, has a lot of ventilation and I like it so far. I realize it's not a DH helmet, but I bought it for the sole purpose of protecting my teeth and jaw during minor spills on single track. Rocks and tree roots aren't very forgiving to the face no matter what speed you're going.

 The Parachute is very popular in our country due to relatively long hot season. Temperature can reach a peak of 35-40 Celsius in the summer and we still want to ride (preferably night rides). The helmet fills the gap between XC helmets and Fullfaces and it is definitely an XC helmet with a grill. Many success stories including more than a few personal OTB with this grill saving my chin. In terms of price, there is no price for a serious injury, so its a matter of price/performances. Worth the money.

 I feel the need to jump to MET's defense. The reason they don't distribute in the US is they know people here sue for insane amounts of money, even if their misfortune is self-inflicted.

Case in point: some idiot will think it's a DH helmet, get hurt, and sue MET. Presumably, European courts would toss the suit.

It's an XC lid. MET designed it for people who would otherwise do a trail ride with an XC helmet but want the grill protector.

 Given it passes the standards I have no worries about its ability to perform. I'd be curious to see how it handles forces over time and the life of the helmet.

Its something ill be considering for my next downhill lid though.. If it passes standards why worry about it? They can attain those standards and give it crazy ventilation with a ridiculous low weight good on them.

They could offer some more detailed graphics but at the end of the day for me function > aesthetics.

Not sure what price will be down here d3 and dissident are about $350

 You can't compare that thing to a D3 or even a Dissident. That is not a dh helmet and I would never use it as one. I like my face and brain much more then that

 It passes a standard which doesn't test chin guard at all... Like many of the cheapest downhill helmets. What the chinbar will manage to protect in case of faceplant is something that user needs to find out. I find it very hard to figure out any use for that helmet.

 I have a use for it when I don't want my full face but would like more than a hat. At the end of the year on sale I would think about one of these. It is hot and rocky here a lot in Socal but not always what I would consider downhill.

 I made a very small riding mistake early this year in an allmountain trail and end up hitting a tree, at hi speed, boom!!!! , no time for nothing, I was using my met parachute , two impact marks on my helmet near my forefront and on the side of my chin. My colarbone nearly fractured but after 2 resting days i was riding again,

Expensive? I can spend a little more , for a little extra protection before my next faceplant!!

 To be fair, since the chin guard extends quiet a lot on any full face helmet it is very likely to get marks on it. But yeah better to have that chin guard

 Neg prop me all you want, but am I the only one concerned with the protection such a light helmet can offer? I don't mind wearing a heavier lid if that means my brain will stay where its supposed to.

 Ah Pinkbike, how you entertain me so. More posts about looking like a tool wearing a FF riding all-mountain/Enduro/trail than there is about the helmet's safety. Typical. When you all grow up some, those priorities will change. For those whose priorities don't change, Darwin and natural selection will take care you....we all can hope. Smile

 Chin guard sticks out way too far, they design it for a dog? wouldn't fancy wearing this and getting a side impact on the front of it, hopefully the chin guard will break before it snaps your neck...

 People hate on things that are different! If that fullface works as well as my TLD D2 then I would gladly switch to a more ventilated lid. IF it is as safe ect.. I think it looks cool and high tech, probably what the super intelligent engineer that designed it thought too, you F$%KING flamers!

 I've often wondered why nobody had designed a lighter weight full face helmet for all mountain riding. The days of near DOT rated helmets are numbered for me. And while I still think the real full face is great for park riding a lighter weight breathable full face for my weekend and winter riding would be a welcome addition to my collection.

 I have to give the Parachute my nod. Rode a switchblade years back, and rode a Deviant I before Specialized turned the II into a no longer trail worthy helmet. I need a helmet for trail riding that will keep my face away from an errant rock. I don't anticipate too many rag doll crashes during my woods rides. A helmet that protects my face and doesn't weigh me down is key. Looks like a no brainer

 I'm wondering why the full face helmet is getting so much hate. I'm looking for a better helmet. Full face DH helmets are too heavy, so I might get one of those super trendy enduro helmets. A lightweight full face would be super nice here in the summer when it's 100-120 degrees.

 I can't actually seeing that fullface being safe for downhill type stuff…with all the vent holes, it leaves so many areas to get caught in twigs and tree and cause a neck injury, or even a puncture to your face

 A small fall backwards is often worse than a bunch of forward ones where you can roll off your momentum.

 True, damage to the occipital region of your brain can ruin your life a lot more surely than a broken jaw and or nose, but this helmet covers both. Most helmets are just covering the back better and ignoring your face. It doesn't even have to be a very strong face protection, as long as it redistributes impact pressure.

 i got a 661 full face shifted because i thought that looks safe and i could afford it at the time so i wear it all the time riding no matter what the weather is am fine with it just now . every thing is out there you just have to find what suits your needs .
also sorry to hear about david coulthard and his accident in the news it says he suffered a head injury but was he wearing a helmet ? i hope he get through this .

 Maybe it is light and have good air circulation but Cause the construction doesn't look strong and safe enough...besides wait until while crashing all the dirt, rocks and sticks goes thru all these holes...IN YOUR FACE!...naah....thank you...

 Am I the only one who sees a "seam" on the full face? It kind of looks like the chin/lower protection could be removed and you'd have an "enduro/all-mountain" type helmet with the extended rear. Now that would be a helmet I would buy.

 I don't understand full face helmets without cheek pads. I feel like impacts to the chin or from a neck brace would put a ridiculous amount of force on the chin strap.

 I love how mtb it's a fashion show now a days.What ever happened to getting on your bike and going for a ride with your friends and having fun. Now it's all about finding something to wear that matches what your riding and having a attitude that if you don't have the newest shit your a pee on.
