For many January means only one thing: Supercross. In the long months between World Cup seasons there aren't many better ways to get your racing fix. Because it's the start of the Supercross season, all the teams, riders, magazines and websites are bringing out their A-game to get people excited and this year there's been an especially good crop of videos that have hit our screens. Here's a few of our favourites.
What do you think about this, would you like to see some more pieces like this once in a while, or do you prefer it when we keep engines out of it?
Dream Ride: Stewart & Cachia Heli Shoot
Helicopters make everything more at least 45% cooler, that's true for everything from shuttling mountain bikes to Apocalypse Now. So when you take a remote Australian island, an ultra slow-motion camera and two up and coming riders, and then throw a heli into the mix, the outcome was always going to be pretty special. This is what HD was made for.
The Privateer featuring Scott Champion
With the circus around the Supercross series, which pretty much dwarfs our World Cups, the guys who are scrimping and saving just to be there and compete are often forgotten. Scott Champion talks to the guys at Vurb about his preparation, his plans and the challenges he faces just trying to make it to the big show. This is a story that so many racers can relate to, regardless of what you race on or in.
Ryan Villopoto: Soul Survivor
Last year Ryan Villopoto absolutely killed the Supercross series to walk away champion. Take a look behind the scenes with this film at the work you need to put in to reach that level.
Dean Wilson Heli Shoot
His Scottish/Cali accent may count as one of the weirdest you'll hear this week, but we're just saying that because we're jealous of Dean. He's younger than us, faster than us and pinning it in the Supercross Lites class for the Pro Circuit Kawasaki team. Again, the rule of helicopters applies here. We'd like to see more of them in mountain bike films.
Chad, Reed Castillo Ranch
Chad Reed is a determined man. A two-time Supercross champion, at the end of 2010 he was looking at life outside the Supercross circuit, nobody was willing to take a chance and give him a ride. Rather than take it lying down he came back even harder in 2011 with his own team, 22 Racing. After taking a couple of round wins last year, he's looking even stronger coming into this year. Here's him do what he does best, hittting the track, and talking a bit about the forthcoming season.
Thursday Morning featuring Ryan Dungey and Marvin Musquin
2010 Supercross champion Ryan Dungey made the move over to KTM this winter, here he is grabbing some pre-race practice with his new team.
Moto vids are super cool, but the only down side is that it makes a lot of mountain bikers have thoughts of selling their bikes and taking up moto. Everyone gets the thought "Why am I still pedaling when I could be using the twist of wrist." Seen it happen several times. Im lucky enough to ride both moto and mtb
To anyone considering taking up moto because you get too tired riding, do not be deceived by the engine! Riding like you see in any of these videos is extremely physically intensive. Motos weigh around 200 pounds, 5x the size of DH bikes, and it takes that much more effort to maneuver them around! The handling skills transfer well, and stuff that seemed big isn't quite as intimidating once you've adjusted to MX scales.
I've thought the same too. As if the thrill of MX exceeds what I get from mountain biking, but they're different sports. You appreciate different things. Like the walks up the mountain and the rewarding ride down. I wonder if I'd take all that for granted on a moto
Basically the only main trick u can do on a moto is a motowhip (obviously). I know there are other things you can do on a moto but I prefer the greater variety of tricks you can do on a bike.
I thinks its good to throw a bit of MOTO on pinkbike! MX and DH/MTB/DJ etc are similar in many ways after all. If you dont wana watch MX vids on here you dont have to...
I've went thru the moto (atv) phase myself for 1 year. I felt lazy (no offence, my opinion) and I dumped so much money into my quad it was ridiculous. Thankfully I saw the light and got back on my mtb. Still should've never sold that quad though...
My brother use to ride DH with me but has gotten into moto. We stareted out on bikes amd well i suck at moto, never got use to it. And u ever here how moto makes u faster on ur dh bike? Well it may be true, but it made my groterh absolutlely terrible on his DH bike. BMX makes u faster on ur dh bike, cuz it makes u think u have to be smoother. Ive riden enduro and that is very tireing. 40 miles in the desert u will be sore every were lol, but I still dont thinkits that great, guess its cuz i dont like to be a follower. Every one in SOCAL rides moto BRO lol. I like being unique and explaining to people i ride DH bikes.
Moto doesnt make you faster, but moto makes it easier to go from motorcycles to DH, not the other way around. Where I'm from both are rare so its nice.
AMA Supercross is some of the finest head to head racing available anywhere. I think there is a lot of mutual respect between Moto and DH guys because it doesn't matter if it is petrol or gravity that is fuelling your passion ...
All though I have seen every one of these edits because I am really into motocross and when im not doing anything im on pinkbike and youtube watching moto-mountain biking edits. But I would say definitely get a little bit of moto on here. Still keep it running as a mountain bike website, but the majority of the users on this site don't mind seeing it every little while. It's pretty cool to see on a site like this.
Does anyone else think that its a bit bent for the filmers to use the same song in the dean wilson vid as the Justin Barcia one. Especially cus theyre so similar. Can they not find another song?
I think radridinghood meant that all that any average rider or a weekend warrior can do is a whip on moto, while you can find a lot more average riders doing threes or flips on bikes. I (don't ride a moto) tend to think that flipping a moto might be a bit too extreme for average moto riders.
If people are selling their mtb bikes for a moto, then they really aren't that into riding anyway. I ride with several guys that used to be into moto big time. The skills they picked up in motocross definitely make them faster riders. Now that they're on DH bikes, they wouldn't dream of going back to moto. Unless that is to scout for new mtb trail locations...
I cant work out whether you are joking or just mentally retarded? i cant see how anyone could consider those two vids as a world apart. Heli slomo shots of racing round a track whipping about.... seems quite similar to me. If they'd used the song for even the same sport in a professionally done video its a bit of a dick move, but almost exactly the same shots? it just takes away from both videos.
Fuck I thought you were talking about the riders themselves. Yeah what you're saying is true for sure. They were edited at a similar time tho so I doubt it was done on purpose
I ride both, I love both. I love the woods. I ride with my cr250 in between trees, I ride with my fury in between trees.
Bike or pushbike are the same S..T bros... Two wheeled inventions.
Same family , same passion. slip over a frame rolling o wheels.
it doesnt' matter if I am the engine, the gravity is the engine, or mr honda is the engine.
all we want it to dive into softy berms, we love to go fast, make sick lines........
respect the two wheel world.
I know some DH racers practice on MOTO but... Keep MOTO off Pink Bike unless Pink Bike is going to become a resource for MOTO. Else you water down your core audience. I used to Motocross but I don't com on Pink Bike to find out about it.
If you dont like it dont click it, atleast they are keeping content on the site that 99% of the people dont mind watching. No one says you have to click it. But the people who did wanna watch them did click, unlike some of the few including you who clicked to complain.
I agree with a lot of the other guys, Moto is cool but I come to pink bike for bike news photos, videos and gear. If I want moto there are sites for those. If your gonna open up to other similar sports you guys should show more BMX vids, photo's and gear. One of the biggest reasons I love My Mtn Bike over moto is the silence of the human motor. There is a certain one with nature I feel on my mtn bike railing 60km/hr on a sweet piece of single track, the sun sparkling in my eyes rustle of the brush as I rip by, the rush of adrenaline and endorphin's pumping through my veins. It's that feeling of Zen you get when you feel one with your bike and nature. This is a feeling I think gets drowned out and is not as noticeable with roar of a 3 stroke engine. So granted there are similarities in tricks, big air, and speed between moto and mtn bikes I just think Pinkbike should just keep emulating the greatness that is only found on a mountain bike.

Well said @jazzeph1. Personally I religiously check on on my Moto web sites (almost as much as pinkbike) and hadn't seen a couple of these. I think this is an awesome little feature and again if you don't like it don't click on it.
Thanks PB!
PS. Deano's style is as good as anyone on two wheels. Amazing stuff from that kid.
yes please. i'll have another thank you as well.
i think that a low key moto addition to pinkbike would only serve to ehance the viewing experience. i happen to be old enough to have refined my priorities in life to include spending a lot of money on both motorbikes and mtn bikes, and feel lucky to be able to do so. i think both sports benefit one another, and even if you might not do moto, it's hard not to enjoy the entertainment factor. as for the idea that moto doesn't require cardio or physically challenge or exhaust a participant- can only be coming from someone talking completely out of their ass.
more moto. but less horrible tunes like the one on that stewart video.
I think that the addition of motors to pinkbike should be welcomed. I'm not saying that they should have moto videos every week but it's nice to see them once in a while especially when you look at what MX has given to mountain biking. Gwinn crossed over from MX to MTB just a handful of years ago and now he is the world cup champion. Half of the pros use motos for training, lots of our suspension technology comes from dirt bikes and above all else it's fun to watch.
If you don't like watching the MX videos don't click on that article. It's pretty simple.
dean wilsons heli shoot has been one of the coolest videos out in a while. the section of triples that he quads..ga so awesome. I like that pinkbike shows some MX stuff on here..its still a bike and both mtb and mx are just straight fun so if you can mix the two every now and then on the site I dont think anyone will be upset, its nice to have a bit of variety in a website that we all visit countless times a day
As great as biking is, moto is the best. There are thousand of people on Pinkbike who ride mountain bikes and motocross, and they all know there are perks to both. Whether you like one or the other everybody loves being on two wheels and ripping through trails at 100 mph. A few moto videos a month won't change how much everybody loves biking, so where's the harm?
I really liked the lites rider vid. Especially the boosting of massive triples. You don't see much boosting anymore for all the whips and scribe.
Also, remember a VHS from way back in the day with some awesome heli shots. 'REAL SICK' it was called and was of some DH. So so good, especially for way back when. What the hell was the tune for that segment?
If its got two wheels its my deal. Keep the Moto content coming. its refreshing in the off season since mtb content is thin. furthermore, somebody give Dean Wilson some kind of award the kid is incredibly talented on a bike. He was always fast even as a kid. I remember racing him when he was 12 year old slaying pro times in Alberta.
I ride both and I can ride moto year round!! It's great!! I try to get into racing dh!! Talk about a wast of money!! Now I race moto and dh for fun with my friends, They both rock!! All my moto friends respect the Mt.bikes. But all the close minded Mt.bike people out there is sad to see. Mixin it up is a good thing people!!
Me rikey Moto. Kicker, that is such an ignorant statement. While very different sports and training, Champion moto racers have unbelievable fitness. Ricky Carmichael's VO2 max was greater than that of Lance Armstrong.
I think there's lots of crossover athletes between mtb and moto. The vibe of the two sports is a bit different, but I think they have the same soul to them. Its all just fun on two wheels!
I disagree. To ride a 200+ lbs machine for 30 minutes plus 2 laps, twice at as close to an all out pace as your body will allow or 20 whatever pound bicycle. I'm not saying that mountain biking isn't hard, but having raced both, Moto is definitely more taxing psychically and mentally.
selling their bikes and taking up moto. Everyone gets the thought "Why am I still pedaling when I could be using the twist
of wrist." Seen it happen several times. Im lucky enough to ride both moto and mtb
Have you EVER seen FMX?!
Barspin
Nice way to embarrass yourself. Maybe you should watch some FMX Or Even MX. You should really know what your talking about...

Incidentally, I come to pinkbike for bikes, not moto. Don't much like moto tbh, too noisy
Thanks PB!
