First Look: Kali Shiva Prototype Helmet - Taipei Show

Kali Protectives showed us a prototype version of the Shiva, their new carbon fiber shelled full face helmet. Brad Waldron, Kali's founder, took us through some of the Shiva's highlights and explained their reasoning behind seeking out DOT certification.

Helmet Design

A look at the unique foam used in the Shiva.
The Shiva's was designed with the intention of dissipating the impact energy generated during a crash as fast and as efficiently as possible. To accomplish this, the helmet uses Kali's Composite Fusion Plus technology, where foam is shaped into small pyramids in order to help spread the impact to a greater area, lessening the forces that reach the head. The shell of a helmet with Composite Fusion Plus is bonded tightly to the foam below, without the gap that is present in traditional full face helmet construction. The tight bond of the shell to the foam lets Kali use a thinner shell, which helps quickly transfer impacts to the portion of the helmet that actually absorbs the shock, the foam. The shell of the Shiva is constructed of carbon fiber, with plans in the works to have the carbon layup be more visible in the final production version. Other colors will be available as well, but details haven't been finalized.

The chin guard area of the Shiva was designed to preserve the strength that comes from constructing the helmet's shell from carbon fiber. Carbon fibers are strongest when they run in a straight line - sharp bends or curves diminish the material's strength. For this reason, the Shiva has a channel in the chin guard area to keep the fibers as straight as possible as they run from the back of the helmet towards the front.

The u-channel in the chin guard preserves the rigidity of the carbon layup, while vents in the front of the helmet direct airflow to exit vents in the back.


We asked Brad Waldron about the decision to create a DOT certified mountain bike helmet despite the controversy the certification generates. There have been concerns that the DOT certification may be too stringent for the mountain bike world, creating a helmet that is potentially too stiff, and doesn't dissipate impacts enough to prevent head injuries. Waldron feels otherwise, and explained that by using different densities of foam inside the helmet, Kali was able to design a helmet that's strong enough to meet the DOT standards, yet with enough impact absorption to be effective at the speeds and types of impacts mountain bikers encounter. By using multiple densities of foam and the Composite Fusion Plus construction, the Shiva addresses the main issues that arise with traditionally constructed, DOT certified full face helmets.

 Do it. Murdered out is the tightest color scheme. I'm a fan of those cone-shaped pads. Def. a step up from the usual flat foam padding in terms of cushioning impacts.

 My bottom line is that I want the helmet that is going to do the best job at keeping my brain from getting a concussion on any level. I don't care about the graphics and paint, although attention to detail adds some value. I would love to see a third party company (Pinkbike?) Get all the leading helmets (Kali- Shiva, Bell- Full 9, Troy Lee- D3, Fox- Rampage, Specialized- Dissident, Giro- Remedy, and any others) do some impact tests on these helmets to truly see which helmet is going to do it's job best. Any helmet can look good, Red Bull and other sponsors prove that, who cares how cool your helmet looked if your brain dead.

 If that helps I've been reading some full face helmet teesting lately in a german magazine (they didn't make the test themselves but outsourced it to local experts like TüV or something). The Kali and the Bell were not in the test, but best was considered the Specialized, then quite similar results for TLD D3 and Fox Rampage, then Giro Remedy. I think there was the other Kali helmet (the one currently on the market) which obtained one of the least good results mostly cause of too flexy chinguard.
Helmets have been tested according to MTB criteria AND MX criteria.
If that helps... Don't think I still have the pages, I could otherwise scan it for interested people (yeah it's in german but graphics are graphics and grades are grades!)

 One of my friends that I ride with is at university for kinesology, and just spent close to 4 months doing exactly this. The findings are still in the early stages, but there will be some interesting data coming out of the study... The one thing that I can say about it is that fit is by far the most important thing to look for in a helmet.

 I remember the Kali's opinion about DOT certified helmets not being suitable to mountain biking, and suddenly they say other way around. That changed too quickly and I don't feel they explained the reason really. Helmet looks very nice but I am not convinced.

 if you actually look at the tests required by each, the astm downhill certification, the DOT requirements, and the snell foundation standards all require similar impact tests; astm DH and snell both dictate no more than 300g's from a 2m drop onto a flat anvil. The main difference is that the motocross helmets are required to meet other criteria such as penetration tests and faceguard testing.

I'm sick of this fear-mongering about how motocross helmets are dangerous.

I just remember big article about DOT certified helmets being not suitable for mountain biking, where designer from Kali was saying that they do not certify mtb helmets, as DOT certification uses different tests and DOT certified helmets are not good in absorbing impact, that is typical on mountain bikingSmile

But that article was 99% marketing BS. I don't recall it citing any facts about impact testing or standards whatsoever.

 I have no doubt that a DOT helmet would protect you on an MTB, it just might not be such a 'comfy' experience. Either way, you guys are all sensible enough to wear one. That's most important Big Grin Now lets go ride!

 All black is always the way to go but I think the design of the helmet itself is pretty ugly. Sorry I'm not sorry. Also the whole DOT certification thing especially with the changed opinion is pure marketing.

 hmm, sounds like it may be more of the "if it takes a sharp impact, throw it away" style, (they don't really define what they mean by "thinner shell," but the construction sure sounds more like a typical "thin shell plus bonded foam" that you see in XC/road helmets) which isn't something I'm in the market for in a several hundred dollar helmet.

 I have ridden Kali helmets in EVERY sport for 4 years now. I have absolutely destroyed helmets in DH races, dirt jumping, etc. and I have walked away from some nasty situations. For a while I was calling myself LUCKY, but there came a point where I had to acknowledge that I was my protective equipment. It took me quite some time to feel confident in such a light helmet (Avatars I and II) but now I wouldn't ride in anything else. Brad is an incredible engineer. If you look into his history of designing composite components for some of our country's most technologically advanced military aircraft you will realize that designing helmets is nothing for him in comparison. Combining his expertise, their access to incredible materials, and their safety, I would never consider wearing anything other than Kali Protectives.

 Shameless plug right there eh? He may well be an incredible engineer and be able to make some incredibly safe helmets, but honestly there is not a worse looking helmet on the market right now. Or ever before. The actual shells of all Kali's helmets are bulbous and gross. The graphics are even more appalling. What are all these helmet manufacturers thinking? The only "good looking" full face bicycle helmets are the D3, the new Rampage, and the older v3r(obviously same shell as the dot v3). The new Bell isn't too bad either. And I would be much more willing to trust my brains in one of TLD, Fox, or Bell's helmets way before I do Kali. I mean come on? How many years of experience do said brands have making moto lids? Not only moto lids, but the best in the biz. How many years has Kali been around? Have any championships been won by a rider wearing a Kali? Based on looks alone I would forgo the Kali, but how you can choose not to go with a much more established brand is beyond me.

Its not about getting free shit, I work in the industry, I already have hookups. I am all about supporting companies that I feel passionate about, that make the sport bigger and better, and that share the same goals as I do. Kali does one thing amazingly well and that is build safe helmets. There is plenty of data to back that up Kali is a pretty young company, they are learning as they go. I would never hesitate to point out their flaws, nor their greatness of course. . In fact, let me bash on my own sponsor right here. Nothing held back:

1. Kali's graphics are f*cking awful. They have definitely improved, but they have a long way to go. I hope that they end up with a designer like Richard Vye soon! But if looks are your number one concern, then I worry about you. I relay the feedback to them often, and make suggestions, but there is only so much I can do. Hopefully this thread will let them know what the people want!

2. Fit/Shape. One of the difficulties of making a safe helmet is shape. Some helmets are thinner in the forehead and rear sides, this is to make the helmet look more natural. Unfortunately, those parts of the head stick out and are most prone to impact. Kali puts safety before look there, but as you can see, they are getting more and more streamline as their technology develops. Ugly, sometimes, but safe.

3. Fit: Thank god they are better now, but for a while, fit was very inconsistent between different helmets. Im a large durgana, and a medium avatar, and some of the half shells dont even fit me. Like I said, much better now. Just pop one on your head before buying and you wont have any problems!

Now, I could list 5603284324045 things I love about them, but hey, this is pinkbike, people only care about the shit talking, so enjoy!
