Fire it up! Danny Hart, Sam Reynolds & Josh Bryceland getting things going with a fun train down the gauntlet trying to hit hecklers in the face just how they like it.
One doesn't just drop into Whip-off Worlds... One warms up first. In this case, it was massive trains of dedicated whip artists...including Casey Brown.
Rat boy getting sideways early on during the warm up for the whip-off. Rat-boy thrives on whips--breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Warm up in the bag, it was time for a pre Whip-off rider's meeting, aka the "Laying Down of the LAW" by Sven Martin, "Whips only--straight airs and any other trick that doesn't have a whip involved will get you pulled."
Andreu limbering up for the slopestyle tomorrow... So easy staying the right way up.
With the rules laid down, it was on.
Jackson trying to look slimmer. Purple really adds size to your hips.
I put some 20's on my whip.
Aggy, lapping up the atmosphere at the start...
...and throwing down style for miles.
A lot of the World's fastest were in attendance to show they can bust a move when the clock's not ticking.
Getting nasty early was Bernardo Cruz of Brazil. He was going large, but more importantly, going to 90 and beyond on almost all of his whips.
"I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky; I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black; yeah"--The Rolling Stones
Ed Masters, Wynn Master's sibling, was happy to let it all hang out in a set of flip flops.
Not content to get his whip on with flip flops, Masters was also jumping with a megaphone slung across his back, blaring out an earsplitting warning siren anytime the Kiwi was on track. #crazykiwis
Always good to see Eliot Jackson on the trails. The Yeti rider may have retired from racing for health reasons, but everyone was glad to see him in the house.
Jackson digs a knee into the armpit for turbo extension.
High fives all around for Jackson.
It's a whip contest.. Bike whipping. Not some messed up S&M show where you take a lashing for pleasure. Not everybody got it.
Ty McCaul whipping in the wet; the skies opened up two times during the jam format comp, but it didn't seem to deter either the riders or the spectators.
Eddy Masters shows off a fresh Vancouver pedicure. Health and safety what?
Vanderwhip
Literally balls out on the Whip-Off!
"You mind stepping back a bit? No crowding the jump, please? Unless you want to have tire marks on your face?" Sven Martin managing crowd control.
Rampage hero Kurt Sorge... a whip force to be reckoned with.
One side benefit of being the organizer of the Whip Off Worlds is you can go anywhere on the course you want to go. Sven Martin with one eye on incoming traffic and the fish-eye lens on Vanderham.
Casey brown bringing home the gold for the few ladies who were bold enough to step into the comp; hopefully we see a few more next year.
Brendan Fairclough mugging for the cameras.Hard to believe Bren-dawg's still riding (and racing) on a blown knee suffered in last year's Redbull Rampage.
flipwhip
Swedish Steez
Watching the whip comp was like checking out a parade of ridiculous, luxury automobiles. Here we have a fast, expensive car, such as an Aston Martin. Winning whip with Bernardo Cruz.
The man with all the prize money seeking verification that the winners will spend it on things which will benefit their development in the long term. Not Jagerbombs out of an old fork stanction.
Another view of Cruz's winning whip.
Red Bull/One Industries' Cruz, the happy champ once again.
Ok, who sponsors him next year? So much attention on pinkbike, fun videos, selling the lifestyle like no one else at the moment, effortless. There must be a queue of sponsors in front of his rusty van.
I can't believe once I had to get stitched on my shin because I rode with flip flops in my backyard and these crazy kiwis do whips at crabbapple hits with those....
Anyone know what these medical reasons are that prevent Elliot Jackson from racing ?
Also hes gotta be the only black rider on the circuit that I have seen which is surprising as black people are at the top of nearly every other sport out there.
Maybe you didn't notice , but it's some thing i have noticed is a lack of black riders in top level DH , which as I said I find strange because black athletes are at the top of pretty much every other sport out there.
BMX , MX , F1 , Athletics , skate and many more have thier top black competitors but not in biking which I just find odd.
Though I do applaud your attempt at being politcally correct by pretending you didn't notice he was black , it's not racist to notice hes not white ya know
Eliot suffers from Asthma. At world cup events his Asthma was even worst so he decided that it would be be right for his Team Yeti. Let opened the spot for another racer. He has such class and I got to talk with him on a few occasions, he's really sympathetic and all round great person. Nice to see him at Crankworx.
I wondered the same thing when I was in the States. I saw one black guy in three years out on the trails. He became one of my riding buddies and I asked him the same question on a long drive to Northstar.
He said basically it is about opportunity, and the lack of opportunity trickled down from segregation. He said that it was only a few generations ago that you weren't allowed to play professional baseball or even go into many public parks if you were black. You tend to live a similar life to your parents: they ski, you ski (or board). They ball, you ball. That's why the black athletes are into the sports they are into. He told me he went skiing in Whistler and his family came across another black family skiing - each said to the other "I thought WE were the only ones!"
If you are a young talented black athlete and your family has less money, your opportunity comes in getting a scholarship to college. And for which sports are you going to get a scholarship? Football? Yes. Basketball? Yes. Cycling? Nope.
One of the reasons there aren't more blacks in the sport (and this is speaking as a black person) has something to do with what is popular among a group of people. What is popular too most black people aren't sports like mountain biking, motorcycles, skateboards, snowboards, etc.... Some of the listed have seen more and more interest (skating and motorcycles in particular), but as iamamodel pointed out, most blacks only have role models in more traditional sports.
On top of that, some sports require a certain degree of affluence. DH is one of them. Hell, I know lots of white people that can't afford it so no surprise there aren't a lot of blacks and mexicans here in the states doing it.
But I care less about the color of my skin and more about whether or not my bike is working!
Just a note to the judges for next year, this is a whip contest, NOT a popularity contest. It should be one of the few places an average joe can turn up and win.
Stop putting people doing average whips and casing jumps into the final just because they are famous or have tits.
Agreed! There were a lot of sick riders cut because they weren't pro enough. Riffle was cutting people en masse that were not "Pro" it kinda turned my stomach a little.
Suggestions: 1) Live feed! 2) A pro division and amature divison so the not so popular riders get chance to move on and compete. 3) Better and more organization. It was a gong show up there.
Over all it was the best MTB event that I have ever participated in. So much stoke!
I was actually totally just wondering what happened to elliot jackson the other day. To bad none of his whips made it in the article his were always sick
nice id like to know what kind of breaks those are Bernardo is running they look huge on the rotors, man those Santa Cruz v10's sure do seem to whip nicely..every time i see a rider with crazy nice race suspension linkage the whip is more of a table whip, seems like that v10 really whips well from what iv seen..
just because you are mixed doesn't mean you are black if I mix 1ml of chocolate icing with 10 liters of white icing does that make the icing chocolate?
tells everyone to step back away from the jump because it could be dangerous to the riders....
STANDS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE JUMP WITH HIS CAMERA.

Also, a quick Google found this: www.theguardian.com/world/2010/may/17/white-people-95000-richer-black
If your family has only assets of $5000, how the hell are you going to afford a $5000 DH bike?

this is what DatDK looks like in person. He is whiter then the color itself.
